broken encoders

2011-02-04 by shellfritsch

hello

i just picked up a used bcr2000 for real cheap. looks like it was dropped, as three of the encoders are missing the knobs & shafts. i tested the encoders out with a small tool & they still work great- in fact the whole unit functions just fine. i tried gluing in some replacement shafts to attach knobs to, but one of the broken encoders is in the top row & thus a "push" encoder. my attempts so far to make a proper shaft that still has a "push" to it have been unsuccessful.
at this point i'm thinking it would be better to just replace the encoders.
has anyone here been through this process? part numbers?
also, any tips on disassembling the unit? i removed the screws from the side panels, but they seem stuck to something, don't want to force it...

thanks!

Since a brand new BCR can be purchased for around $139, I see no reason for
attempting to repair this one.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong but From what I remember there are two tabs on each side which need to be pushed towards the centre of the unit to get it to pop off.

So would you buy one for me, please...? ;-)

yes that's right -
I can't remember the exact position but they were a bit tricky to find.
I ended up breaking the tabs on one side, which hasn't had any detrimental effect.

All I am saying is that replacing parts for such an inexpensive item doesn't
seem practical.

And no offense, but if you can't afford to invest $139 into a piece of equipment
for your studio, maybe you shouldn't have a studio?

I'd just like to say that that is just plain rude. Some of the greatest musicians and composers in history lived and died penniless. If you think that a person should not try to be creative unless they've got enough cash to start with, perhaps you should be a banker and leave creativity to those of us who are a bit more sensitive.

maybe in the states but not up in canada. they go for about $200cdn and
probably more in different countries. plus fixing things can be fun and
rewarding in its own right.

I've written a small guide for removing the side panels without breaking the tabs djo3yk and Martin were talking about.
You can download it from my web site:

Hope this helps,
Mark.
