BCR problems

BCR problems

2007-12-21 by k0mp0

My BCR has done what I expected might happen...

My BCR is in U-3 mode which means it can not accept MIDI from the rear
ports. The preset and system buttons have CCs set up on them which
means I can't change my BCR to S-1 - S-4 because I can't get to
Edit>Global mode. This means I really need to fix the USB driver now.
I have no idea what's up with it, all I know is that I can't get SysEx
to send to it. Otherwise, MIDI works fine to/from it. The only error
message I've seen from the USB driver has been "The I/O device
reported an I/O error", which shows up every time I turn it on when I
have the 1.2.1.3 driver installed ( - even on a fresh copy of
windows.) Can anybody help?!

The last thing I did was to restore the factory default presets, then
I wanted to send one preset to it. This came up with a small r on the
top left of the display but proceeded to accept the preset. I tried to
send it again, but the same thing happened, even with another old
preset that should be fine.

When I try to send anything to it now, there is no display of any kind
of input, and there is no change on the LCD display. The green USB
light is on though.

If anyone could possibly help me here I'd really appreciate it!

Regards,
-Ryan

Hi Ryan
what I would do is the 'Panic reset' Hold 'EDIT' press 'EXIT'
PAnC appears in the display and you should be able to work from there.

It really sounds like you either have faulty hardware or, more likely
corrupted firmware in the flash.

Load the the latest firmware with MidiOx on the MIDI ports - set to
S-1 (don't bother with the USB).

If it is still faulty I suggest that you either get it serviced, but
this may be as expensive a good second hand unit, or open it up and
press the Flash chip back into it's socket.

If this doesn't work see if you can get a new CPU board from Behringer
and replace it yourself.

Hope it works.

Royce

Re: BCR problems

Hi rpcfender,

Thanks for your help, but this unit is way more stuck than you think!

If I could use the system buttons to get to edit>global mode I would
be able to change it to S-3 and have no problem sending a new SysEx to
it through the MIDI-IN port at the rear. The thing is, the system
buttons and the preset buttons are all changed to CCs so I can't
change to any other mode or any other preset. This, coupled with the
fact that the broken USB driver does not let the BCR receive SysEx
over the USB MIDI port, makes my unit stuck in U-3 mode, unable to
change. I can't send a new SysEx to it, or change the preset, or reset
the unit holding the EDIT and EXIT buttons, so I'm looking for some
other way to change the preset on it.

I opened up the unit today and tried taking the flash chip out and
putting it back again. This didn't reset the flash in any way and the
unit is operating just as it was before I took it apart, so, no luck
there.

Maybe I can get a new CPU board or a new flash chip from Behringer,
but I won't be very happy paying for a replacement part for something
that was broken when I bought it. I should have send it for repairs as
soon as I found the problem, but I thought it was a windows/USB
port/driver error.

Anyway, I'll see what Behringer say about sending me a replacement
part but if anybody can think of a way to change to a new preset on
this, please let me know.

Thanks,
-Ryan

OK I messed up again

  Try this.
  Power off the unit
Press and hold 'exit' & 'store'
Power on while holding down the buttons.
This should initialize the preset buffer.

Re: BCR problems

2007-12-22 by k0mp0

I tried this, it didn't work! But what I did find, was that the USB
port on the BCR had a problem, it's loose or something. After screwing
the BCR back together once I had removed and replaced the flash chip,
I held the USB lead down as I pushed it in and turned it on, and
noticed that windows didn't pop up an error from the tray saying the
usual "The I/O device reported an I/O error", so I was able to change
it to S-3 mode from which I could properly control the unit from.

So, maybe one day I'll open it up to fix the USB port on it if I need
to, for now though I'll just leave it as it is and use it in S-3 mode!

Thanks for helping!

Ryan'
glad to hear you got it going again.
What version of the firmware are you running?
This is very curious as start up works perfectly for me and I have 1.10

If you power up with store and learn pressed does it display "LOAd" ?
(you have to turn it off to cancel this)

As far as the USB it sounds like there is a bad solder joint on the
PCB. What are your soldering skills like?

All the best

Re: BCR problems

2007-12-23 by k0mp0

I'm running 1.10 on both units. I'm not sure how you mean by the start
up working on yours, do you think start up on mine is different?

The only difference I can think you might think there is, is when I
said holding EDIT and EXIT doesn't work, but this was because it was
starting up into a preset that didn't have functioning system buttons.
When I tried it, it would do nothing apart from show 'off' in the
display when I let go of the buttons.

I'm sure it would work now but I don't need to do it as I have it working.

Yes, it says 'Learn' when I start it up holding STORE and LEARN. Does
this put it into a mode that accepts SysEx on all MIDI-in ports (even
in USB mode?) or something?

My soldering skills aren't great, I've pretty much broken two
soldering iron tips somehow, and I usually can't heat the joints up
too well with my weak cheapo iron. I'm thinking of buying a decent one
some day, but I wouldn't like to flick and spill molten solder onto
the board in my BCR just yet, especially when I can do everything I
need to in S-3 now.

I'm just trying to figure out how to use .tx now, could you kick start
me by telling me what would work to get an encoder to send one CC when
turned anti-clockwise, and a different CC when turned clockwise?

I tried this, and a few variants of it but it doesn't output a thing
when turned:

$rev R1
$preset
  .name 'TRAKTOR (P2) '
  .request off
  .egroups 4
  .fkeys off
  .lock on
  .init

$encoder 1
.tx ifn $B0 $00 $7F ifp $B0 $01 $7F
$end

What I was after was an encoder that when turned anticlockwise would
send a value of 127 on MIDI Ch 1, CC 1, and when turned clockwise
would send a value of 127 on MIDI Ch 1, CC 2.

Regards,
-Ryan

To get functioning fkeys you need to have ; .fkeys on. The init preset has .fkeys on set.
So if you get a locked unit, power on with store+exit .
The 'init' should flash for about half a second , the controls should all be dark except for group select 1 button.
Now you can press exit+store to get to the global area to set .startup from last to a preset that doesn't lock all the keys.

Sounds good

There are only 4 characters in the display and it should display 'LOAd'
This state is one way to LOAD a new version of the firmware into the flash.

Sounds like you will need a tech to help out.

You are sooo close

When you use the encoder with .tx you must have at least a .resolution command.
You are not using val so you don't need minmax or default
The default value are .resolution 96 96 96 96 or the unit is just as happy with .resolution 96

$rev R1
$preset
.name 'TRAKTOR (P2) '
.request off
.egroups 4
.fkeys off
.lock on
.init

$encoder 1
;.resolution 96 96 96 96
.tx ifn $B0 $00 $7F ifp $B0 $01 $7F
$end

This should work OK

All the best

That's exactly what I need... I think this is good info for the Wiki
too. It's strange that Behringer didn't put this into the manual.

The .tx works fine, thanks!

Can I ask for a small feature the next time you make a change to
BCREditor? It would be nice if it would store the value of the 'Auto
Refresh' checkbox in the .ini file, so the next time I load it and go
to the Save & Get page, it doesn't send out a preset name request to
both my units as it messes up when it receives data from both of them
and I have to click make a change in the 'Sysex Header Bytes' section
and refresh it again to get a valid reading. It would also be good if
it also stored the values set in the 'Sysex Header Bytes' section.

I know it's not too important but it would just be nice to not have to
wait for both devices to finish sending data for no reason before I
could carry on. :)

Thanks Royce,
-Ryan

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
