Source for 4000 series chips for Digital Noise Source?

Source for 4000 series chips for Digital Noise Source?

2005-03-24 by Adam Schabtach

Okay, this is slightly frustrating. After planning a module based on the CGS
Digital Noise source and a homebrew sample & hold, ordering the PCB from
Ken, ordering a custom panel from Front Panel Express, I discover that the
4006 shift register has been discontinued. None of my usual suppliers
(Mouser, Digikey, Allied) carry it, and I'm not yet sure that they carry the
other 4000 series chips. Anyone have any good sources for these?

Thanks--

(I'm assuming you're in the US).

The 4006 is available at a lot of the surplus electronics pages. One that comes to mind is Hosfelt Electronics:

www.hosfelt.com

Good people, and the 4006 is much less than $0.30 each.

Cheers,
Scott

Try this - http://www.web-tronics.com/cd4006.html

$1.50 (US) and they've got 381 in stock.

Many of the other 4000 CMOS IC's are available (4017, 4024, 4030) and
I've got a pretty tidy pile - EXCEPT for the 4006 and 4024! Let me
know what you need and I'll look for it. No charge.

The NTE equivelent 4006 IC's that I bought from Mouser were no good
in the noise circuit (check archives), but neither were a small bunch
of TI and Fairchild. Series made no difference.

Okay - Hosfelt is temporarily out and many other places are selling
the IC for over $1.50, BUT - I've just been offered 50!

Wheee!!!

Seriously, the Digital Noise is one of my favorite modules, and I'll
not let this fade into obscurity! I'll know by Monday if my little
stock sweep plan works.

Stay tuned and start soldering, Adam!

Jameco has an NTE4006B for the rather ridiculous price of $2.85. I mean, I
don't mind paying this (since it's a tiny fraction of the overall cost of
the project), but I'd like to be sure that it will probably work before I
put in the order (since they have a $20 minimum and I'll have to find other
things to buy, oh darn...). Any guesses? If I'm reading the archive
correctly, it looks like substituting "equivalent" chips doesn't always
work, but this one has an NTE part number NTE4006B so it should work? Maybe?
Fingers crossed?

Thanks--

NO!!! The NTE parts NEVER worked! Read my last post - I've got a
trace on a small cache of 4006's. I could have 50 next week! No
minimum order - heck, no order! I give you one!

Yes, I wrote that. I'm wrong - I actually just finished testing the
last five 4006's I have. Two RCA series A devices (no input
protection on the first CMOS chips -be VERY careful and grounded!)
and two NTE devices. Now to be honest, 2 good out of about 65
tested in the last year is pretty close to "never worked", right?

I'll still let everyone know if the new batch comes in. Keep buying
the Digital Noise boards! Seriously, I ditched my Henry
Supercontroller project because it wasn't as useful in my modular.
The effect can be done with different shift registers (4015) but not
as neatly and with less range.

Thanks for the info. I looked in the archives and thought the conclusion was
that chips by other manufacturers that are "equivalent" to the NTE4006 would
not work, but the NTE itself would work. Apparently I mis-read the messages,
or missed some messages.

In any case I'm forging ahead with the project. Heck, I've paid for the
panel and PCBs (both Ken's and my custom sample & hold), so I'm not gonna
let a silly little chip stop me now. :-)

Hey all,

Ok, so let me get this straight because the archives are giving me
conflicting info. Is the mouser part 526-NTE4006B ok to use or not?
Sorry to ask again but I didn't see the conclusion. If not does
anyone have one of the ones that do work that can hook me up?

Thanks ahead of time.

Ok, so NTE won't work. Does anyone have a source to pick up just one
4006 that is usable and that won't cost an arm and a leg to ship?

FWIW my Digital Noise is running quite happily with an NTE 4006B. I
purchased it at a local shop rather than Mouser, though, and apparently
people have had mixed luck with NTE.

I'm going to be ordering the PCB from ken when it comes back in stock
so yeah, I haven't found a source yet. If you or anyone else has one
laying around, let me know, I can compensate for the cost, I'm in the
USA. Otherwise I'll try the NTE one.

Hi all!

The NTE devices *are* really spotty but I've had about a 50% success
rate with the NTE4006. Also tested in my circuit were A and B series
RCA and TI units. The success rate was much better (though I only had
6 to test then) but there's no guarantee that any one device will
work. It would be prudent to use a socket for this IC, buy extra
4006's and test what you've got. In this application, no one IC will
*sound* better. Some might not tolerate super-low clock speeds but
I've yet to have one drop out.

To my annoyance, every distributor I've contacted that claimed to have
4006 IC's has not been able to find their stock. What a shock. I'll
keep looking for a supply, but I don't have any qualms about buying
the NTE's and testing.

I just gave away my extra to someone else, but if you get totally stuck drop
me a note and I'll see whether the local shop has more. They were NTE (as I
mentioned) but the one I bought there worked for me and I could test 'em in
my module before sending one to you. Doing so would pass on a favor that
someone else did for me.
