Do I Need a Different Printer??

Do I Need a Different Printer??

2006-09-12 by pspuser5

Hello All,

I am a newbie, and I purchased the PFP in the hopes that it would
correct the color problems with my printer. I have an HP Photosmart
7350. I have calibrated my monitor with the Huey. I went into the
properties for the printer and chose "Manual" for the color
management and then just removed all choices for a profile, because
that was the only way I could see to "turn off" color management in
this printer.

Now, I have printed out both the 150 and 225 targets, and I am
continuing to get the same poor results. I am using Kodak Ultima
Satin paper (set to HP Premium Plus Photo, Glossy) in the driver, as
instructed by Kodak. I think I am doing everything right, and then
my test print turns out with a grayish/reddish hue, and just a
general washed out appearance with highlights blown way out.

I love my HP printer. Is it time to part with it and go with
something a tad more professional?
Thanks!! Vicki

Removing printer profiles at the OS level does nothing to stop color adjustments at the driver level. You need to go into the advanced driver properties and find the one that turns off color correction at the driver. It may be under ICC/ColorSync/ICM as a subsetting of "None" or something similar.

But, for some reason, there is no "Advanced" button with the
PHotosmart 7350. When I go into properties, it has a Color
Management tab....when I go under that tab there are two options:
Automatic and Manual for applying a color profile. There is a
window where you can list associated profiles, and I have removed
all of the profiles from this list and then chose Manual.
Therefore, if there are no profiles from which to choose, does that
mean that the color management is turned off??

I'm really confused.

Are you going into the printers properties under Windows? Thats not the correct location: its the driver settings, once you have chosen "Print" thats the location for turning of driver color adjustment...

No, I am not going to "Control Panel" and then to printer properties. I am hitting "Print" and then going to that printers properties, and for the Photosmart 7350, there is a "Color Management" tab on its properties window, and that is where I can either choose Automatic or Manual for how it chooses a color profile.

I've just installed a PhotoSmart 7760 so that I could take another look at the driver settings. The 7xxx series (at least this one) as only two choices under Color: ColorSmart III and Grayscale. As I recall the 8xxx series also has a third option, and for those printers, its this third option you want. For the 7xxx printers, you chooose ColorSmart III (the other option isn't going to get you color at all...) and then make sure that no other color management occurs. If there is a Manual selection under Color Management, scroll to the top of the list, and see if there is a "none" or similar setting.
