LCD Moniter Calibration with SpyderPro 2.2 - DVI or Analog

LCD Moniter Calibration with SpyderPro 2.2 - DVI or Analog

2007-11-18 by tech4x5

I am about to calibrate a new Dell 2707WFP LCD moniter with SpyderPro
2.2. If I use the DVI connection, I do not have access to the front
controls on the moniter such as brightness and contrast. I only have
access to these when I use the analog connection. Since I want to
calibrate the moniter with my SpyderPro 2.2, am I better using the
analog or DVI connection? Thanks.

Always use the DVI connection as image quality will be incredibly better than analog. Not
sure what you mean by not having access to the front controls with DVI?

I usually explain this in terms of someone who has always had a standard transmission being dissapointed with a new car with an automatic transmission, since it no longer has a shifter, clutch, etc...

Using analog to gain controls not available digitally does not necessarily improve your results, and lacks all the virtues of digital video. There aren't actually hardware adjustments for brightness or contrast in your LCD anyways, so most of the value of adjusting them is lost, since its applying the adjustments at the videocard, not to the display. The one that is actually a hardware control is backlight. So I'd suggest hooking up digitally, and adjusting your white luminance via the backlight control, and leaving it at that. You aren't loosing much in the way of real hardware controls, and you get direct digital color.

--- Thanks for the reply. BTW...I just love the PrintFix and
SpyderPro software. Could you please clarify a few details for me.
The following is my understanding of the profiling process. Please
correct me if I am wrong in any of these steps.

1.The first thing I do is make my print profiles with PrintFix Pro.

2.Then I hook up my moniter with the DVI connection

3.Using Spyder2Pro,I calibrate my moniter using the moniter's default
settings. I use the settings of gamma of 2.2 and a white point of
6500K in the Spyder2Pro software calibration.

4.Is there any reason to meaure the visual luminace using the
colorimeter or meausure the ambient light using the software?

5. What do I do if I need to tweak the moniter profile to get it to
better match the print I've made with my custom profiles? Do I
adjust gamma and white point settings in the Spyder software and
recalibrate?

6.Could you please be more specific as how to adjust the white
luminance?

Thanks again,
Matthew Kraus

Well, typically on calibrates the monitor first, since its your eyes in the printer profiling process...

2.Then I hook up my moniter with the DVI connection

3.Using Spyder2Pro,I calibrate my moniter using the moniter's default
settings. I use the settings of gamma of 2.2 and a white point of

That should be reasonable for a moderately lit studio area...

4.Is there any reason to meaure the visual luminace using the
colorimeter or meausure the ambient light using the software?

The Ambient Light Tool would adjust your monitor "brightness" to your ambient light. The Measured mode would allow you to enter a different white luminance (AKA: Brightness) value to match your proofing light, if desired.

5. What do I do if I need to tweak the moniter profile to get it to
better match the print I've made with my custom profiles?

Other way around: unless you have chosen inappropriate target values for your display profile, you should tweak the softproof of your printer profile B&W values (in the Ref Black and Ref White options in Spyder3Print/PFP2) or the print output of your printer profile by using the basic or advanced sliders.

Do I
adjust gamma and white point settings in the Spyder software and
recalibrate?

Adjusting gamma won't change much, as applications compensate for gamma, so it will look the same. Adjusting whitepoint can change your percieved white tone on screen; that can be good, depending on what proofing light brightness, or what type of paper you are using (whitened paper has a cooler whitepoint).

6.Could you please be more specific as how to adjust the white
luminance?

Depends on your goal. First read all the help on each related screen in your software. That covers a lot of this, in a lot of detail.
