Hi and Happy New Year to you all,

I'm new on this list so I will start by introducing myself. I'm a french
musician and singer working with guitars and synthesizers. I work in a
Pub in the city of Toulouse which owns a Disklavier. It's great for me
to play on such an instrument but no document can be found and I'm
facing some problems...

Can somebody tell me the age of this instrument ? It's a black bright
piano and the disk module is integrated in the top (not upon it). There
are only 5 or 6 buttons and a display on the right of the drive and the
words below them are in japanese, the display too ! Midi in and out are
below the keyboard, on the right side.

Playing a disk is OK and I have a Midi signal at the Midi out, but I
can't control my expanders from the piano keyboard. My aim is to add
some strings pads to the piano sound and to control the volume of the
strings with a FC7 control pedal plugged in my MCS2. Do you think it's
possible ?

Thank you and best regards.

Hello and welcome to this group.
I think the Pub has bought a second hand import from Japan Yamaha
disklavier, normally the display is in english when sold by a real Yamaha
dealer. In Europe is a huge amount of sales of second hand Yamaha from
Japan. They are conditioned for the Japanese home market and can have
problems wit humidity in Europe.
This model is one of the first disklaviers, today we will find the control
unit as a seperate box. Also your disklavier does not have a sound module
build in. Of course you can play other midi instruments with this
disklavierk, but it is possible that you have to change some settings in the
disklavier wich is very difficult if you can not read japanese language !.

I can't help you with you other questions but you should be able to
find the age here:

http://www.yamaha.com/ycaservice/group004/fgrop004.htm

...if you get the serial number. Sounds like an 1986-1990 or so,
model.

New disklavier user

2014-01-16 by Sam Kanter

Hi, I'm director of The Keyboard Collective in NYC.

I am the lucky owner of a disklavier! My brother, a fine pianist with several pianos, had an MPX100II sitting in his basement for 18 years that was barely used, and gave it to me a s a gift.

Unfortunately, the floppy drive was not reading or writing by the time the movers got it to my apt. I contacted Yamaha and can replace it (for $300), and would have to install it myself unless I want to pay another $300 to a technician.

I'm thinking I can do it myself (I have installed hard drives in computers) but there will be no instructions. Any advice would be appreciated.

I have hooked up the disklavier to my desktop through MIDI and have accessed all the wonderful public domain MIDI performances available, so I'm using the disklaver all the time. Also play it silently using Synthogy Ivory virtual pianos - beautiful.

Would appreciate any thoughts on the floppy, and will look for other tips and tricks. Glad to join this community.

Good evening, everyone.

Sam, if I were you, I would forget the floppy drive and upgrade the unit with a DKC-850 control unit. This control unit will give you the modern user interface of a contemporary E3 Disklavier.

The normal way to add a DKC-850 to a Mark II is to connect it to the original control unit via MIDI cables. This is the "add-on" approach. The preferred approach is to use the DKC-850 as a complete replacement control unit. This is possible with later models, starting with the Mark IIXG. When used as a complete replacement, you can get access to the DisklavierRadio and DisklavierTV services.

At one time, Yamaha sold upgrade kits to upgrade a Mark II to a Mark IIXG. These kits included the replacement control unit and some replacement circuit boards. You don't actually need the Mark IIXG control unit, just the other parts. To see if this is possible in your case, call Yamaha Piano Service: (800) 854-1569 between 8:30-5:00 PST.

To find out about the features of the DKC-850, check out this webpage:

Bill - that would be great! I was told by Yamaha service that there was no service manual for this, that i was on my own. I was also told that the disklavier technicians at Faust harrison Pianos in NYC were not trained to install floppy drives, and did not know how to do it.

Can you suggest any other viable options (besides just bypassing it with MIDI) to buying and installing a new floppy drive?

i find it difficult to understand why anyone would want to bother with floppies. you can make and play an endless variety of playlists from the computer, can do it wirelessly etc etc. if i had music on floppies, the first thing i would do is copy it to a computer and or backup drive.

I replaced my floppy drive on my Mark lV recently. It's a pretty straightforward kind of job. You should talk to Martain at Yamaha parts about the button that may be needed to use the current floppy drives. Just be careful and all should go well

Neal, i have spoken to Martin. He never mentioned a button, but did say there was a circuit board that had to be attached with tape. He said there was no service manual for this. I am a bit nervous about doing it, especially with no manual.

Re: [disklavier] New disklavier user

2014-01-16 by Spencer Chase

there are a whole bunch of ways that people have used. i have a blog
entry that describes how i do it on my LX pianos. it is pretty much the
same. to me, this is an incredible way to have full control but it
involves installing a couple of addons to Media Monkey and that is not
real easy to do and to configure. You can use the same free remote
access program to control a simple MIDI file player such as VanBascos or
my free file player available on my web site. there are many ways to
accomplish the same thing. i am not saying mine is the best especially
if you are playing MIDI because it is a lot of work to figure out. My LX
plays from MP3 files and since it plays them without temporal (or other)
distortions it works great and i don't have to bother with the MIDI
stuff. unfortunately the DKV does not play as well from MP3 files so
MIDI is better but much more work.
www.spencerserolls.com go to the download page if you want the free
player. it really works best with files that have meta data added as
keyworded text events and i have tools for doing that but it is not
easy. the player was really intended for my files and for others that
are set up to work with it.

Seems like the rhetorical question is asked and answered within the same message.

You would replace and use a floppy drive because it's a fixed cost and a known constant.

As Spencer specifically mentions at least three times in his reply, what he's suggesting is not easy to configure.

Also... 3.5" floppy drives should cost about $10, not $300. I'm not sure what magic Yamaha wraps around what's undoubtedly an OEM floppy, but it probably doesn't matter. If you find a new replacement drive, I'm sure it'll seamlessly fit without a great deal of hassle.

And, I guess, once that's up and running, options for emulating the floppy can be considered. Let's not forget you need to be able to read the floppies in the first place for any of this to matter.

You can use the same free remote access program to control a simple MIDI file player such as VanBascos or my free file player available on my web site. there are many ways to accomplish the same thing. i am not saying mine is the best especially if you are playing MIDI because it is a lot of work to figure out. My LX plays from MP3 files and since it plays them without temporal (or other) distortions it works great and i don't have to bother with the MIDI stuff. unfortunately the DKV does not play as well from MP3 files so MIDI is better but much more work.
> www.spencerserolls.com go to the download page if you want the free player. it really works best with files that have meta data added as keyworded text events and i have tools for doing that but it is not easy. the player was really intended for my files and for others that are set up to work with it.

I just spoke to Martin, and he confirmed that the button I was talking about is related to the CD drive that I also replaced. The floppy drive just fits right in without any issues. And yes, you probably could find a cheaper one on eBay
