Copying from midi-files

Copying from midi-files

2002-01-18 by david mellander

Greetings,

Can anyone tell me why when I copy some midi-files,
one hand, usually the left, does not operate the keys
and thus the sound is very dull? Other files play
both hands correctly.

I would appreciate knowing if this problem can be
eliminated/

Thank you,

David Mellander at mellander@...

Please refer to the post I wrote 10 days ago that just now made it to the
list - Midi Files and the DKV. Basically, you need to set your DKV so that
L=1 and R=2, or Prg, or any number between 1 and 16. Yamaha refers to MIDI
files as "import files", and the User's Manual that came with your DKV
explains this well. The MIDI data you want your DKV to play should be on
Channel 1 or 2, so you may need to edit the MIDI file.

While playing a MIDI file, push the -> once and you should see that L=1.
Probably R=## so both hands are not playing. Whatever selections you make
to change these settings will go away when you power down, unless you make
these changes using Function mode.

Convert .wav to midi-file

2002-01-21 by Victor Lim

Hi,
Is there any way to convert a file stored in .wav format to a midi or eseq
format playable on a disklavier? I have a CD of piano practice pieces
which I would like to slow down during playback on my DKV.
Thanks,
Victor

Victor,

I am not aware of any such software that will do what you are asking. There are
a couple of programs (for the PC anyway) that will take say one note at a time
and convert it to single MIDI 'notes' but not with chords. More than one note at
a time in the .wav file (especially with much reverb or room noise in the
recording) and it is just about impossible at this time to do such a thing. Add
in multiple instruments and, well you get the idea. The resulting waveforms in
the .wav file are far too complex to get anything meaningful out of it.

However, there are many programs that will 'time stretch' a .wav file for slower
(or faster) audio playback listening only. They will read in the original .wav
file and without changing the pitch of the original music up to a limit. You
cannot slow it down say by a factor of 4 and expect to hear a natural re-play of
the original sound. Programs such as Sound Forge for the PC or Peak for the Mac
both can do this. Some of the other programs that can do this are sequencers
such as Logic Audio, Cakewalk's Sonar, or Cubase. These are not freeware or
shareware programs.

There are some shareware 'time stretch' programs out there such as
http://www.seventhstring.demon.co.uk/xscribe/index.html?AfID=1873 although I
have never tried them. It helps walk you through the process what you are asking
according to the web site but it is not totally automated.

In other words, you would still need to only listen to the audio and would not
be able to re-create complete scores on your DKV. It would be great though,
wouldn't it?

Hope this helps a little...

Danny

Re: [disklavier] Convert .wav to midi-file

This capability is still in its infancy - especially where piano music is
concerned. MIDI files separate out each musical instrument in an orchestra
onto its own track. Audio files have the entire orchestra playing on one
track. So if you have a CD where more than one instrument is playing, or an
instrument like the piano which generates harmonics, you are out of luck.

However, if you have just one voice - a person singing, a flute or trumpet,
etc., but not a piano, it is crudely possible. There is software available
for free that attempts this.

It does not work for piano music, though, because of harmonics. If the
software hears for example, the C below middle C, it also hears middle C,
middle G, the C above middle C, the F above middle C, etc.

My suggestion would be to find someone who plays the piano to record these
pieces on your DKV. You could then make different audio recordings of these
files playing at different tempos.

Greetings--

There are a couple of programs out there which attempt to convert wav to
midi. Such efforts are in their infancy, but may be adequate for your
purposes. Check out www.akoff.com and www.widisoft.com.

Hi Victor

You could try this site.

http://www.btinternet.com/~irshatwell/WaveGoodbye/software.html

I used their old software with some joy but they have a newer version
now.

Please post your findings to the group as it may help others.

Victor,

Others have pointed out the futility of trying to use the wave-to-MIDI shareware
programs that you can find on the Internet. They are not worth your time. Nor
am I so sure that audio-stretching programs are worth the effort either--You
could spend a lot of time re-recording for the tempo you'd like.

Here's what I'd do: From the notation, enter the music into Finale (or Sibelius
or Power Tracks) and save in MIDI format. Copy it to a DKV diskette. Use the
DKV controls to adjust the tempo to suit. You can also keep the left and right
hand separated for individually playing. If you have a laptop and Power Tracks
or Cakewalk, you can select just the measures you wish to play (loop them, if
you'd like) and adjust the tempo within the sequencing program. The result,
with its clockwork playing and constant note velocity, will not be very musical,
but it will be accurate and precise. When you play from the keyboard, you can
add your expression and later compare it to your CD recordings.

Good luck!
