E3 stops playing the middle of a song

E3 stops playing the middle of a song

2017-05-30 by mqphan@...

Hi,

My baby grand disklavier E3 (3.5 years old, brought brand new) suddenly stopped playing in the middle of a song. I have only used it lightly (on average monthly for less than a hour each time since I purchased it). It has been performing well. Last night I noticed that when it suddenly stopped playing, the purple/blue light on the PLAY button went off but the screen is still scrolling. The song that it was playing is not particularly "busy". When I pressed it, the button lit up again and the piano started playing again. It happened 3 times during the course of one hour. I turned the unit off and on, but that didn't seem to stop the problem.

I appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Minh

There is a chance a keyboard or pedal solenoid is sticking, thermally overloading the power supply and kicking the power supply off. Don

Thank you Don for your reply.

If overloading the power supply is the problem, wouldn't that shut the unit off completely? When this happened the screen was still on and scrolling.

My other question is if there is anything I can try or should I call for service. If I do, can a tech figure out if that is the issue easily?

I am living in a rural area, so it might take a while to get service. The piano was brought brand new and is still under warranty.

Thanks again for your reply.

if cycling it off does not reset it, i would not mess around with it as it is under warranty. when you shut it off, make sure to leave it off for a couple of minutes and unplug it, not just turn it off. i am not familiar with the details of your machine but a lot of electronics have separate power supplies for logic and high power parts of the machine. so it is possible that the protection circuit cut off power to the solenoids but the computer functions continue to work.

I had a similar problem with my MX 100 with a tone generator hooked to my receiver for speakers.

Apparently this caused an impedance mismatch and it would just skip parts of the song.

Hooked up to standard computer speakers and the problem went away.

Purchased a black box to stop the impedance mismatch and all is well.

Minh,

Do you get any message on the screen when the piano quits playing?

To get the piano playing again, do you just turn it off and then turn it on, or do you have to wait awhile for it to "cool down"?

Hi Ralph,

My E3 is not hooked up to anything except the internet. When the problem occurred, the unit was playing a Chopin piece from Memory (that I purchased from Yamaha Music) and it was not connected to the internet. And that piece is not particularly busy (a nocturne) which I have played numerous times in the past.

Ok. Now how do you get it to play again? Right after it quits playing, can you turn it off, and immediately turn it back on and it plays? Or do you have to wait awhile for it to "cool off" before you can get it to play again?

Minh - I would call Yamaha 24/7 and ask to talk to a Yamaha disklavier repair technician before calling a repair man. You can find their number on their Web site. They answer the phones until 5 pacific time and they should be able to help you interpret the diagnostic information and point you towards an authorized technician in your area. Don

Did your tuner do the maintenance and test ,piano calibration?
Pedal pedal regulation and piano calibration are very important thing.
also regular reguration.

Pedal adjustment is the most important point for all type of Disklavier.

please enter maintenance mode and check error log.
Push power switch with Rec and Select.(E3 dkc800)
