Search midi files by track Info?

Search midi files by track Info?

2019-08-07 by carlspost2@...

Hi All,

I have a large number of midi files that are saved using abbreviated titles.

However, in the actual midi file themselves there is a lot of other information regarding the name of the music and performer etc.

These include files available from the e-piano-competition (http://www.piano-e-competition.com/midi_2017.asp)

For example, the attached file is named "CaoJ01.mid " however, the detail are found as text events within the file:

text_event 0 Title: Prelude and Fugue in D Minor, WTC II, BWV 875

text_event 0 Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach

text_event 0 Performer: John Cao

My question therefore is this: is there a program that allows one to search multiple files based on information within the file.... or is there a quick way to rename the files using the text event info.

At the moment I have no way of storing the many (100's) of midi file in any logical order.

Many Thanks!

Carl

Carl,

the meta data is available to any screen search,
In your FIND window, simply type a search for a file like this: "Cao Bach .mid" or "Bach BWV 875 .mid" NOTE that the spaces must be between the words
That file will be found for you. (I just replicated this to prove to myself that it works – as I have that file in my computer).

Thanks for your reply Ian.
This is not working for me unfortunately. I have windows 10 and used the general search function with no luck.

i have programs that will list all text events in MIDI files to a tab delimited text file. i also have a program called "renameastrack" that will change the file name to the first track name it finds. the listing program is part of the midi keyword tools zip on the download page of my web site. the rename as track program is also on the download page.

i have all of the e-comp files up to 2011 with meta data as keyworded text events and track names as composites of title composer and performer. i also have tag.txt files for these which can be used with mid2pianocd. i had to download the meta data from the web site and insert it into the files because the earlier stuff did not have this data in the files. it looks like the 2017 files might have this data which would make it much easier to add the data in a consistent format as i did with the older files. i donot want to take the large amount of time needed to download all of these files but if someone will send them to me i can add the text events and track names to the post 2011 files. i think that i formatted the text events so the data shows up in van bascos.

Hi Spencer,
Thank you for your response.
Actually I have already sent you an email in regard to this so forgive the double up if you discover the duplicated message.
Your e-piano comp files have been just wonderful. Especially in my teaching when I am able to quickly search for a particular piece of music and getting it playing on the Disklavier.
I am happy to help you update your midi files. If you are happy to add the meta date etc to the file names I will send you all the files.
It may take a bit of time but I will try my best to get them to you.
Sound like a fair deal? :)
Cheers,

Might be good to start with a few samples from each year to see how consistent the formatting is of the text events. Then we can figure out how to send them. I have a satellite internet which is not great for receiving large amounts of data

Good morning, everyone.

I believe that you’ll find that all Piano-e-Competition files after 2011 have meta data in them.

Re[2]: [disklavier] Search midi files by track Info?

2019-08-08 by Spencer Chase

if there is a way to bulk download them all after 2011 i can do it myself. i remember that getting the earlier ones required multiple downloads and that i could not figure out how to get a download manager to do it. maybe it is easier now?

also is there any reason to get a different format than the XP files? they work on my LX, do they work for everyone?

i looked at a a sample of the 2013 files and it does look like the meta data should be easy to extract but it also look like the data entry was sloppy with many errors.

Might be good to start with a few samples from each year to see how consistent the formatting is of the text events. Then we can figure out how to send them. I have a satellite internet which is not great for receiving large amounts of data

Carl

i had some time with a fast internet connection so i got all the 2013 to 2018 ecomp files in XP format where available and std MIDI when not available as XP. i will process them adding meta data in a consistent format and will let the group know when i post them to my web server.

That's great news Spencer. Thank you so much.
I understand that the xp format has more information in it, but is it correct that they will work fine on older disklaviers without any difference between the standard files?

Re: [disklavier] Search midi files by track Info?

2019-08-08 by GEORGE LITTERST

Good afternoon, everyone.

Carl, the XP data consists of normal MIDI data plus one or more SysEx messages, polyphonic aftertouch messages, and extra controller messages that do not have a standard MIDI definition.

Any Disklavier that is a non-pro should ignore these messages. However, they do add quite a bit of extra data to the file (and the subsequent data stream if you are sending the MIDI data from an external playback source).

If you have a Mark II or later Disklavier that is not a PRO, I recommend downloading the so-called Standard version of the MIDI files rather than the XP versions. This will work well for playback from and external source or from floppy or internal memory.

If you have a pre-Mark II Disklavier AND you intend to play back from a floppy disk, I recommend using the E-SEQ files because they have been converted such that the on/off pedals are on channel 1 and the incremental pedals are on channel 3.

If you have a pre-Mark II Disklavier AND you intend to play back from an external source, the Standard version of the MIDI file is the best choice. If your pre-Mark II Disklavier responds to incremental pedal data, you should also copy all of the pedal information to channel 3 (also leaving the pedal data on channel 1). If you don’t copy the incremental pedal data to channel 3, you will not get the benefit of that data and the playback may be wonky.

Regards,
PianoBench

Midi Editing & Zenph

2019-08-09 by Ian

Carl,

the XP format works fine for me in playback on my Mac thru older Standard Midi Editors and players. The extra info seems to be ignored by those Apps but the Pro pianos seem to read the XP content regardless.

I notice that Steinway provides an Editor in an iPad with their recording version of the Spirio.
DOES ANYONE KNOW OF A YAMAHA DESIGNED EDITOR?
Their site offers a lot of obscure technical Apps but not a basic Editor. Yamaha were using Zenph to create the e-Competition files. I have Zenph for Mac, which I bought in 2002, but all the Zenph files and apps were sold to Steinway and withdrawn from the general market.

So, DOES ANYONE HAVE ZENPH FOR WINDOWS? – because I have friends with Disklaviers using Windows – and it is perfect for optimising files for many different Yamaha Disklaviers and will convert to and from XP, Pro, MkIV, III, II etc..

Ian

I understand that the xp format has more information in it, but is it correct that they will work fine on older disklaviers without any difference between the standard files?

Carl

Re: [disklavier] Midi Editing - CAKEWALK HOME STUIO

2019-08-09 by Sheldon H. Deluty, M.D.

Good Evening:

The best real time Windows based midi editing programs for the Disklavier I have found over the 25 plus years I have owned my piano are the legacy programs Cakewalk Home Studio 6.0 and/or 9.0

Personally, I think 6.0 is superior to 9.0 because its "primitive" graphics and simplicity of design make it even more ideal as a real time midi editor for the Disklavier

These programs will install and work on any windows OS - even Windows 10 - as long as the OS is 32 bit (not 64 bit). They probably work best on XP, Vista or 7 (but it has to be a 32 bit OS)

Cakewalk 6.0 on a legacy laptop connected by an "M-Audio" USB interface to the midi input of the DKC-850 visualizes all the channels in real time and allows real time manipulation of channels, tracks and other midi parameters

You can save as type 0 or type 1. You can see pedal data in real time on an event list. You can see musical staff and you can even back-generate sheet music from any midi file. As I said, it is almost as if these programs were custom made for the Disklavier

I wish Yamaha would resurrect these legacy programs and offer them with the pianos - it would make editing so much easier for so many users

It is best to get an old legacy windows laptop (XP or 32 bit 7) and install cakewalk and it becomes a dedicated midi editor for the Disklavier

It is really a shame that there is no current program I have been able to find which has the simplicity and elegance of cakewalk for the Disklavier

These legacy programs occasionally come up on ebay - grab them if you can (they require a serial number for installation) - unfortunately Gibson bought Cakewalk several years ago, ran it into the ground and Cakewalk now no longer exists as a company, so you cannot purchase these programs any longer from the company

I hope this information is helpful to the Disklavier community

I am happy to help you update your midi files. If you are happy to add the meta date etc to the file names I will send you all the files.

It may take a bit of time but I will try my best to get them to you.

Sound like a fair deal? :)

Carl,

the XP format works fine for me in playback on my Mac thru older Standard Midi Editors and players.

Ian

i looked at a a sample of the 2013 files and it does look like the meta data should be easy to extract but it also look like the data entry was sloppy with many errors.

My question therefore is this: is there a program that allows one to search multiple files based on information within the file..... or is there a quick way to rename the files using the text event info.

At the moment I have no way of storing the many (100's) of midi file in any logical order.

Many Thanks!

Re[2]: [disklavier] Search midi files by track Info?

i plan to just do the XP files because they will play on both DKV pro and also on any MIDI player that will ignore the XP controllers. it is also possible to edit out the XP data automatically.

once i have the database for the meta data put together, it only takes running a program that i wrote to put the data in the MIDI files. this program can be run on the regular MIDI files as long as the file names are made to match the names in the database. i discovered that there were some reused file names in the 2006 to 2011 competitions. the same performer was in comps for more than one year so the file names made out of the performer name with a round and sequence number was not unique. so i added the year to the file names for all files. this means that the database will not match the original file names. there are ways around this for anyone wanting to take the time to do some simple automatic file renaming.

since i do not have a DKV i do not know how well the XP files play on various DKV models.

does it make sense to strip out the XP data for non XP pianos? my "MIDI cleaner" program would do that. my MIDImod2 program will move pedal data to channel 3 but i do not remember if it copies it or if it moves it?

i do not remember having problems on my LX piano so i never bothered to explore the options.

Regards,
PianoBench

My question therefore is this: is there a program that allows one to search multiple files based on information within the file.... or is there a quick way to rename the files using the text event info.

At the moment I have no way of storing the many (100's) of midi file in any logical order.

Many Thanks!

RE: [disklavier] Midi Editing - CAKEWALK HOME STUIO

2019-08-09 by Geoff Ward

Hi Sheldon and others.

I have found that Cakewalk Pro Audio runs under 64 bit Windows 10. You need
to run it as Administrator. I also have Cakewalk Home Studio 2002 which
will also run under 64bit Windows 10 (although I have trouble at the moment
getting a midi output to play).

I am told that the old Cakewalk v.9 is now available for free from
https://www.bandlab.com/products/cakewalk. I have not tried this.

Kind regards

Good Evening:

The best real time Windows based midi editing programs for the Disklavier I
have found over the 25 plus years I have owned my piano are the legacy
programs Cakewalk Home Studio 6.0 and/or 9.0

Personally, I think 6.0 is superior to 9.0 because its "primitive" graphics
and simplicity of design make it even more ideal as a real time midi editor
for the Disklavier

These programs will install and work on any windows OS - even Windows 10 -
as long as the OS is 32 bit (not 64 bit). They probably work best on XP,
Vista or 7 (but it has to be a 32 bit OS)

Cakewalk 6.0 on a legacy laptop connected by an "M-Audio" USB interface to
the midi input of the DKC-850 visualizes all the channels in real time and
allows real time manipulation of channels, tracks and other midi parameters

You can save as type 0 or type 1. You can see pedal data in real time on an
event list. You can see musical staff and you can even back-generate sheet
music from any midi file. As I said, it is almost as if these programs were
custom made for the Disklavier

I wish Yamaha would resurrect these legacy programs and offer them with the
pianos - it would make editing so much easier for so many users

It is best to get an old legacy windows laptop (XP or 32 bit 7) and install
cakewalk and it becomes a dedicated midi editor for the Disklavier

It is really a shame that there is no current program I have been able to
find which has the simplicity and elegance of cakewalk for the Disklavier

These legacy programs occasionally come up on ebay - grab them if you can
(they require a serial number for installation) - unfortunately Gibson
bought Cakewalk several years ago, ran it into the ground and Cakewalk now
no longer exists as a company, so you cannot purchase these programs any
longer from the company

I hope this information is helpful to the Disklavier community

I am happy to help you update your midi files. If you are happy to add the

Hi All,

I have a large number of midi files that are saved using abbreviated titles.

However, in the actual midi file themselves there is a lot of other
information regarding the name of the music and performer etc.

These include files available from the e-piano-competition
(http://www.piano-e-competition.com/midi_2017.asp
<http://www.piano-e-competition.com/midi_2017..asp> )

For example, the attached file is named "CaoJ01.mid " however, the detail
are found as text events within the file:

text_event 0 Title: Prelude and Fugue in D Minor, WTC II, BWV 875

text_event 0 Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach

text_event 0 Performer: John Cao

My question therefore is this: is there a program that allows one to search

Re: [disklavier] Midi Editing & Zenph

2019-08-09 by Ian

Thank you both, Spencer & Sheldon, for your update on recommended Midi Editing for my friends using Windows.

The Zenph Editor is called RePerform.
I use the Mac version particularly to
1) edit all 3 pedals – incremental pedal is accurately plotted from Pro recordings;
2) as previously mentioned, to optimise midis for various models of Disklavier.
Saving old format midis to MkIV, Pro, or XP gives a noticeable improvement to quality of playback on my Enspire.
3) Adding silence or subtracting it at the start or finish of a midi.
It sometimes refuses to open files manipulated by other Editors, but there is an easy work-around.

Re: [disklavier] Midi Editing - CAKEWALK HOME STUIO

2019-08-09 by Sheldon H. Deluty, M.D.

Pro Audio may work

When I tried installing 9.0 on a Windows 10 64 bit system, it refused...I didn't even try with 6.0

My point is that the legacy Cakewalk programs are uncluttered in display and very easy to use - the only problems are getting the software and having a 32 bit Windows operating system

The other neat thing is if you can get an unused copy of 6.0, it comes with a printed owner's manual - like software vendors used to provide in the old days

With every new generation of Cakewalk, I have found that it became more and more "sophisticated" and in my opinion, overkill for the Disklavier

Just my own opinion

I hope this information is helpful to the Disklavier community

there are a lot of extra events that need to be passed on the rather slow MIDI data stream. i can see how this could cause event slurring. it should be possible to strip out the XP events if this is an issue.

what i know nothing about is how the channel 3 that the pedal events are on effects the way the pedal works. if this is messed up it could be really awful. i checked and my MIDImod2 program moves pedal events to channel if that option is selected, it does not copy the events.

??

Regards,
PianoBench

Carl

available as XP. i will process them adding meta data in a consistent format
and will let the group know when i post them to my web server.

if there is a way to bulk download them all after 2011 i can do it myself. i
remember that getting the earlier ones required multiple downloads and that
i could not figure out how to get a download manager to do it. maybe it is
easier now?

also is there any reason to get a different format than the XP files? they
work on my LX, do they work for everyone?

i looked at a a sample of the 2013 files and it does look like the meta data
should be easy to extract but it also look like the data entry was sloppy
with many errors.

Might be good to start with a few samples from each year to see how
consistent the formatting is of the text events. Then we can figure out how
to send them. I have a satellite internet which is not great for receiving
large amounts of data

Hi Spencer,

Thank you for your response.

Actually I have already sent you an email in regard to this so forgive the
double up if you discover the duplicated message.

Your e-piano comp files have been just wonderful. Especially in my teaching
when I am able to quickly search for a particular piece of music and getting
it playing on the Disklavier.

I am happy to help you update your midi files. If you are happy to add the
meta date etc to the file names I will send you all the files.

It may take a bit of time but I will try my best to get them to you.

Sound like a fair deal? :)

Cheers,

Carl

i have all of the e-comp files up to 2011 with meta data as keyworded text
events and track names as composites of title composer and performer. i also
have tag.txt files for these which can be used with mid2pianocd. i had to
download the meta data from the web site and insert it into the files
because the earlier stuff did not have this data in the files. it looks like
the 2017 files might have this data which would make it much easier to add
the data in a consistent format as i did with the older files. i donot want
to take the large amount of time needed to download all of these files but
if someone will send them to me i can add the text events and track names to
the post 2011 files. i think that i formatted the text events so the data
shows up in van bascos.

Subject: [disklavier] Search midi files by track Info?

Hi All,

I have a large number of midi files that are saved using abbreviated titles.

However, in the actual midi file themselves there is a lot of other
information regarding the name of the music and performer etc.

These include files available from the e-piano-competition
(http://www.piano-e-competition.com/midi_2017.asp
<http://www.piano-e-competition.com/midi_2017..asp> )

For example, the attached file is named "CaoJ01.mid " however, the detail
are found as text events within the file:

text_event 0 Title: Prelude and Fugue in D Minor, WTC II, BWV 875

text_event 0 Composer: Johann Sebastian Bach

text_event 0 Performer: John Cao

My question therefore is this: is there a program that allows one to search
multiple files based on information within the file..... or is there a quick
way to rename the files using the text event info.

At the moment I have no way of storing the many (100's) of midi file in any
logical order.

Many Thanks!

Carl
