HELP! Computer and Disklavier Floppies not compatible.

2002-03-19 by chicagograssroots

Hi. My wife and I just bought a used 1995 MX100 disklavier. It
uses the old 720k disks and when I format them in the disklavier
unit, the computer won't recognize them as formatted or allow me to
download files onto it. Whats the trick? Or is there no way to
download onto older disks?

That's normal. Disklavier does a format different from DOS. To read the E-SEQ
files with your PC computer, you need a DOS program, Yamaha Disk Manager,
produced by Giebler. See www.giebler.com

If you grew up on MS Windows, you may need to learn a couple of DOS commands to
use the program, but I believe you'll find Giebler's accompanying instructions
adequate.

Good luck!

I'm not an expert on the older units, but you might try formatting a
720K on the PC first and see if the controller can read it. I know the
commercial disks have a deliberately damaged first sector (ignored by
the disklavier) as a crude form of copy protection that prevents PC's
from reading or copying them. Possibly your unit formats disks the same
way. The free dkvcopy utility in the dkvutil suite in the files section
of our vault will duplicate these disks, except the copy has a proper
first sector and is therefore PC readable.

The suggestion that you received to format the disk on the PC first is a good
one. Note, however, that if you format on a Windows computer, you must be
careful to tell the computer that you are formatting a 720K disk as the
computer does not seem to recognize the type of disk by its physical
attributes. A Macintosh will format it correctly if you choose the PC option.

On the subject of formatting with the PC, hopefully you have at least
one PC that is not running Windows XP. For some unknown reason, the
great monopolist (MS), in its infinite wisdom, removed formatting
support for the 720k format in XP. I'm not sure about Win 2000, I never
checked. They're almost impossible to find at the stores, but on the
web you can find pre-formatted 720's at great bulk prices.

You have to use the disks that are formatted in the
720k format before the disks will work on your player
and your computer. If you have the old double density
disks install them in your computer and format them to
the 720k format. If you have the hd disks(which most
are no) put some tape over the window on the disk that
is not for the write protect and format them on your
computer. In the format window it gives you the
option as to the format you want. Chose the 720k
format. When done they will read both on the
disklavier and your computer. When you format on the
player it puts the disk in the 320k range and your
computer will not see it. If you have anymore
questions write jjoos99@.... I just went
through all the frustration that you are having now.

Thanks. I tried formatting the disks in the computer, but then the piano didn't recognize them as formatted. I'm using Windows XP, so thanks for the heads up Todd or I would have never figured out why it didn't work. I'll buy some pre-formatted ones somewhere on the net. Any recommendations on preferred vendors?
