Hell0, I need help with setting up my laptop which has cakewalk sonar installed and interfacing it with my disklavier. I have been unable to use my computer with appropriate midi cables using the serial port and I have downloaded the Yahama CBX driver. Is there a synopsis available to document the steps, settings and requirements for playing midi songs from the computer to the piano. Is there a USB connection that will allow for midi out? If so where? Many thanks for any help Frank

Frank, A couple of things to check: When you downloaded and expanded the driver, did you find the readme.txt file? It contains very complete installation instructions. Make sure the Yahama CBX driver is really installed. Go to the Windows Control Panel, dbl click Multimedia, and the MIDI Tab and you ought to see it listed. Make sure Sonar knows you want to use the Yamaha driver. In Cakewalk, you pull down the Options menu/MIDI Devices and select the appropriate device. You say "appropriate midi cables using the serial port"!? Are you using a "TO HOST" cable and do you have the switch on the DKV unit set to "TO HOST"? Have you set the MIDI IN of your Disklavier. Try setting it for CH=1 and play a file where the note on's are directed to MIDI channel 1. fran403 wrote: > Hell0, > > I need help with setting up my laptop which has cakewalk sonar > installed and interfacing it with my disklavier. Frank, I am assuming that you have downloaded and installed the appropriate CBX driver for your operating system and that you have connected the serial port of your computer with the TO HOST port of your disklavier's controller with the proper cable, and set the slider switch to the proper setting for a PC (as opposed to a Mac or to the midi setting). See your disklavier's user manual if any of these steps are confusing to you. If you have done these things, and you are using Sonar, then open up Sonar, select Options, select Midi Devices, and make sure that the CBX driver is moved to the top of your available list of midi devices and that it is selected, i.e. highlighted in blue. Failure to do this step will make the CBX driver unavailable to Sonar even though the driver has been properly installed on your computer. Your disklavier should now be accessible and you should be able to play back midi files from Sonar using your disklavier as the midi device. Tom fran403 wrote:

You either use the To Host port OR the Midi cables in conjunction with a MIDI interface connected to your computer. If you use the To HOst port, set the switch to MIDI and use the CBX cable and driver. If your laptop is a MAC, there is an extra step in setting up the MIDI port. If your computer is a PC, you still have to choose which MIDI interface you are using. This is usually done in the Options menu of the software. The whole thing is a matter of setting the switches correctly - often easier said than done the first time you do this! Good evening, everyone. In a message dated 7/25/02 7:58:17 PM, Carol writes: << You either use the To Host port OR the Midi cables in conjunction with a MIDI interface connected to your computer. If you use the To HOst port, set the switch to MIDI and use the CBX cable and driver. >> I think that Carol mistyped. If you use the To Host connection, set the switch to Mac (for Macintosh) or to PC2 (for a US Windows computer) or to PC1 (for a Japanese Windows computer). If you use MIDI cables, set the switch to MIDI. If you are using the To Host connection with a Macintosh, you will connect the other end of the serial cable to either the Modem or the Printer port. As far as the Macintosh is concerned, you are using a standard serial MIDI interface (which is actually built into the Disklavier's control unit). If you are using the To Host connection with a Windows computer, you must install the Yamaha CBX driver AND configure your MIDI software so that it understands that it should communicate with the serial port.
