Bad Floppy Drive

Bad Floppy Drive

2003-03-26 by rvig51

I have a Disklavier Grand Piano (acoustic) with the separate big
black Control Wagon and a big umbilical cord that joins them.
Over 12 years old, it is a G2 R 49XXXXX series piano and the
separate Control Wagon model is a DKW10. The floppy drive
stopped reading and writing diskettes about 5 years ago and we
were cut off from our music collection. I've tried to get a
replacement floppy, but the local Yamaha repairman can't find
one and it's not a generic PC floppy mechanism. I recently got
frustrated and hooked up an old Mac computer running
sequencer software and we are now enjoying the player
functions again and an endless collection of piano music in MIDI
file format from the internet. Have any other members with old
floppy-based systems had drive problems and found a solution
to replace it? Ultimately I can live without it, but I would like to
access all of the PianSoft disks I collected over the years. If all
else fails, I'll buy Geibler's conversion software and salvage my
Disklavier disk collection as MIDI files.

P.S. - I just joined the group and I already love it! I'm not alone
with my aging Disklavier anymore.

Did your Disklavier technician contact Yamaha about a replacement part? I
would try that first. If your technician does not know how to do that, call
Yamaha Piano Service: (800) 854-1569 between 8:30-5:00 PST. Push 2 at the
first menu choice and 2 at the second menu choice.

Keep in mind, however, that you might be better off adding a DSR1 to your
control wagon (and thus saving the cost of a floppy drive that does not read
high density disks). The DSR1 will have its own floppy drive that can read
both the old double-density disks AND the newer high-density disks. In
addition, it reads and writes Standard MIDI Files and has a built-in tone
generator. In essence, the DSR1 will give you many crucial, modern features.
It will connect to your control wagon with MIDI cables, and it includes an
extra set of MIDI ports in case you also want to connect it to your computer.

Go to the files section of our group website and download the dkvutils
suite of freeware programs. You will need a PC (not Mac) that can be
booted into native DOS (Win 95, 98 or ME, but not NT, 2000 or XP). It
can not be run in a DOS window. The dkvcopy program will allow you to
make copies of your Yamaha software that, unlike the originals, can be
read by the PC, thus allowing you to transfer them to a hard drive
and/or convert them to midi format with the other utilities in the
suite. Here's a link right to the utility files:

I have a MX100II Disklavier appr. 6 years old. It has the control
unit built inside. I opened it to check the disk drive:
It is a Mitsubishi MF355-E-492MD. The connector is a double 26 pin
type for a 'flat cable'.

I got the idea to compare it with the one from my old laptop (6 years
old).
It has a disk drive with exactly the same connector as the one from
the disklavier. It is very thin too and the case looks similar.
I did not test it in the disklavier, but I will keep it as a spare
part.
Of course I am not shure now whether it will work. To find it out I
have to investigate for technical details.

Bernhard Schmidt

I had the same problem with my disk drive in a MX-85.
Maybe because my 18 month old daughter thought it
needed to be fed chereos years ago. Anyway, I called
our old friend mark Wisner at Yamaha and he recomended
that if I was too cheap to buy a new drive from Yamaha
(around $100.00) then there were a lot of useable
drives in old Yamaha midi sequencers.

I went to ebay and bought a old MDR-2 for $12.00, took
the drive out of it and put it in my piano and it
worked great. Has been going strong for 2 years now.

Of course I can't guarantee that it would work for
your's but it's a thought. I looked on ebay just now
and there are no such boxes listed but they do come up
frequently as people clean out their closets. At the
time he said a drive from a DOU-10 or a QX-3 would
work as well.

Good luck, Larry...

Larry:

Thanks for the advise! That sounds like a great way replace the drive
without too great of an expense. I'm afraid that my floppy drive also fell
prey to unsupervised (and probably unorthodox) use by my kids. My youngest,
who's 10 now, used to shove disks in without looking to see which end went
first when he was about 3 years old. Oh well, we had a lot of fun and all 3
kids grew up loving music. I'll keep an eye out on eBay for an old Yamaha
sequencer unit.

I'm using a novel workaround right now that cost me $0! Todd Muncy told me
about DKV Utilities, which I used on a PC to make copies of my Disklavier
disks and then converted to MIDI files. Then I set up an old Macintosh SE30
computer that was growing cobwebs in the garage and hooked it to my Control
Wagon via MIDI. With an old copy of Opcode Mastertracks Pro sequencer
software running, we are now listening to the Disklavier once again. Its
working so well (I've also been downloading tons of MIDI piano files from
the internet) that I'm thinking of painting the Mac's case glossy black to
match the piano and leave it sitting on top of the Control Wagon. The best
thing of all is that everything is now playing from a hard disk. We only use
the Mac's HD Floppy Drive to load on new MIDI files.

Best regards, Rik

Sounds like a great work around. maybe better than
using the original disk at all. if it works don't fix
it.
