Hi, Sorry if this question was asked before. I have the MARKII Disklavier with a floppy drive. Is there an option to upgrate to a CD drive. thanks, Tasupho

If you have a MarkII, you can purchase a DSR1, which is a control box that upgrades your system to a MarkIIXG. This gives you flash memory, a floppy drive that plays both HD and DD disks, and XG Ensemble sounds. Then, the DCD1 is the CD player that can be added. This would allow you to play Yamaha and other CDs that play your Disklavier while hearing people singing on the audio. If your intention is to continue to upgrade so that you can use the new PianoSmart with the DCD1, you might also need to purchase extra memory. Piano Smart is the ability to record or play a piano performance that plays in sync with a CD. This may also be true if you already have a MarkIIXG system (therefore not needing the DSR1 upgrade) and intend to use Piano Smart. The PianoSmart upgrade for the DCD1 does exist, and will be available very, very soon. Yamaha is putting the final touches on describing how this upgrade will work. There will be two considerations to take into account when upgrading your system. One, will be memory requirements, as some systems will also need to upgrade to 8 meg. The other consideration will be a list of CDs that this upgrade will work with. Yamaha has total control over the products they produce, i.e. Disklaviers, and PianoSoft floppies and CDs, and has always made certain that their products were backwardly compatible with their older Disklaviers. However, Yamaha has no control over how certain CDs were manufactured, recorded or produced in the past (or present) that do not bear their label. That means that there are many CDs out there where the pitch of the music is not anything close to standard pitch - A440. With the MarkIII DKV system this is not a problem because it is capable of adjusting audio pitches to a great degree as many have discovered by pushing the Transpose button and listening to Simon and Garfunkle sing in deep bass to falsetto voices! There is no audio pitch correction on the older systems, i.e. you can transpose the MIDI on the floppy or in memory, but not the audio on an audio CD. If you keep your piano tuned to A440, there might be a perceivable pitch difference if the audio CD you want to record your piano to is prerecorded to a pitch that is either higher or lower than this standard. Upgraders will need to pay attention to the pitch of the audio CDs they want to hear their pianos playing with, and pay attention to what Yamaha has to say concerning these lists. I cannot speak for Yamaha, so in short time they will publish their "official" instructions and details of what and where you can get what you need. You cannot upgrade a Mark II to a MarkIII disklavier. However, you can update any Disklavier to have most of the goodies that are available to play floppy and CD music available from Yamaha's PianoSoft collection. The first upgrade is the DSR1 control box which updates a MarkII and earlier to a MarkIIXG system that provides XG sounds, playing and recording of standard MIDI files, using both DD and HD floppy disks, flash memory software updates, and at least 1 memory disk. The second upgrade is the DCD1 CD player. The newest upgrade for all systems is Piano Smart - the ability to record, or playback a prerecorded piano performance, on a floppy disk with the Disklavier playing along with an audio CD using the MTC (MIDI Time Code). This upgrade for the MarkIII Disklaviers is now available as version 4.45, but a new version, 4.46 will have a different loader program. The PianoSmart update for all other Disklaviers will be available very, very soon. In order to run PianoSmart on any Disklavier older than a MarkIII, you will need to have 8 meg of memory. Don't rush to obtain this memory until Yamaha releases its final instructions and the list of CDs that will sound the best on DKVs that are not MarkIIIs. You probably already have the required memory if the model number of your control box has a "W" in it, i.e. DKC500RW; or has Smart Key; or EMK-1; or is running a 2.22 version of the software. For those of us with MX100IIXG running version 1.44 of the software, we will need the memory upgrade in the form of a new control board. The price and distribution of this hardware will be released by Yamaha soon. Don't do anything, now! What the MarkIII brought to Disklaviers was built-in audio (people singing on CDs) that is transposable, built-in Ensemble sounds with speakers, 16 different memory disks, and included the Smart Key and Silent features built in. Two of these features cannot be upgraded to - the Silent system and transposable audio. MarkIIIs can compensate if the pitch of the audio CD is not the A440 standard; older models cannot. Therefore, Yamaha will be providing a list the of the PianoSmart CDs that will sound best for your listening enjoyment! Back in the olden days when so much of this audio was created, there was not digital audio. The pitch is at the mercy of the motor speed on the tape drive the original analog signal was recorded. Also, a song could be speeded up to make it fit on a vinyl record or CD. Recording studios don't always get their pianos tuned, etc. Whatever the reasons, many audio CDs and cassette tapes do not produce a true, standard pitch. It is amazing that the technology has come so far that the MarkIII does what it does so easily! The rest of us will just have to keep being creative! Yes, you should be able to add the DCD1 CD player and upgrade to PianoSmart without adding additional memory. However, I would still wait and see what Yamaha comes up with in their package, and see what their instructions are. I also note that PianoSmart will allow synchronization with a VCR or "other external component" using the MTC as either a Slave or Master. Remember, I am a piano technician and not an electronics wizard, and my eyes glaze over just seeing these words!!! Hopefully someone like PianoBench will thoroughly get the hang of this and be able to explain the intricacies of this marvelous new toy. Hmmm....I wonder if this means I could have my DKV playing in sync with my home videos?... Thanks Carol, I didn't know that there are MarkII and MarkII XG. I recheck my DKV and find out that I actually have the MarkII XG. To upgrade to play CD. Where can I buy the DCD1 and can I install it myself or if I need a technician. I recently replaced the floppy drive of my DKV myself so I am very familiar with electronics stuff. thanks again Tasupho > If you have a MarkII, you can purchase a DSR1, which is a control box that > upgrades your system to a MarkIIXG. After posting this message I find out the DCD1 is just a CD player connect externally to the control box and seems to be very easy to do. You can purchase a DCD1 through a Yamaha dealer - piano store. It is very easy to install it yourself. The original GranTouch DGT2IIXG released in July 1997 had 4Mbits of flash memory and had the DKC500R control box. When it was upgraded 2 years later with Smart key, it had 8Mbits of flash memory and came with the DKC500RW control box. The DGT2A is the same petite GranTouch digital piano with a MarkIII Disklavier with a CD player. The D means disklavier, the GT2 means GranTouch (petite electronic grand), and the A means is a MarkIII with a CD drive. To answer your question, I thought these had always been referred to for short as "DGT2". I don't know about any DVD1, so I will assume it is a typo and that you mean the DCD1 CD player. Yes, this will work with piano smart providing you have 8 Megabits of memory on your system. If your control box has a W in the model number, or your have the DSR1, or EMK, or SmartKey, or a MarkIII system, you already have enough memory. If not, you will need to upgrade also to a newer control board. These details will be forthcoming from Yamaha soon as PianoSmart has not yet been released for DKVs older than the MarkIII. Carol, Thanks for responding. Yes, I did mean the DCD1. (Sorry about the typo!) I currently have a Mark II Disklavier XG. So I guess I'll wait to upgrade until Yamaha releases more details. Hopefully that will be soon. The model number of my control unit is DKC500RWXG. Since it has the "W" in it, does that mean that it has the 8 megabits of memory necessary? When do you anticipate that Yamaha will release the PianoSmart update for Disklaviers older than the Mark III? It has sure taken them a while. Thanks! -Rob --- In disklavier@yahoogroups.com, "thegorens" <goren@m...> wrote: > Carol, > > Thanks for responding. Yes, I did mean the DCD1. (Sorry about the > typo!)
