Problem with conversion using ESEQ2MIDI

Problem with conversion using ESEQ2MIDI

2003-10-27 by bpsafran

Greetings:

I want to convert some eseq files that I purchased from Yamaha to
Midi so that I can edit and save them on my Clavinova. I tried
using the ESEQ2MIDI program on the files (extracted to my hard disk
using the dkvcopy program) but I get an error message from ESEQ2MIDI
on each file that says ESEQ file is corrupt.
However, the files play fine (from floppy disk) on my Clavinova,
which reads both midi and eseq formats.

Anyone have any ideas on how to fix the files so that ESEQ2MIDI will
be able to do the conversions?
Are there any programs that will do the conversions on the original
disk itself (which is not readable on a PC unless one uses the
dkvcopy program).

Thanks

Sam, I've always used the Giebler Utilities to do that job. See
www.giebler.com It's not free, but it does the job reliably. With it,
you cannot copy an entire Yamaha-protected Pianosoft diskette; however,
you can copy and convert individual files.

For fun, I once tried the ESEQ2MIDI program and it didn't work for me
either. Rather than fight it, I continued to use Giebler which I had
used for years.

If you have never worked under DOS, you just need to follow Giebler's
instruction manual. (If you cut your teeth on CP/M or DOS in the early
days, you're in for a retro experience.)

fyi, giebler's program absolutely positively does NOT work under windows xp,
because xp has no true DOS mode

you need any operating system other than xp (95, 98, me) which can operate
in true DOS mode

i have asked giebler myself, and he either cannot or will not rewrite his
program to work under xp

giebler works best with an old slower computer

i know this from personal experience

actually, with giebler you can transfer filed from an eseq diskette to your
hard drive, convert them and then transfer them back to a diskette

Sheldon's warning is true. Pay close attention to the caveats on
Giebler's Web page:

"All programs run under MS-DOS on IBM PC-XT, PC-AT, or compatibles with
a hard disk drive and a 3 1/2" floppy disk drive. Most programs may be
run under an MS-DOS shell under Windows 3.1, Windows 95, Windows 98 or
Windows ME."

You may have to keep an antique computer around to use the Giebler
program. E-SEQ is sort of an antique too, isn't it?

that is correct!!

until i recently upgraded the player unit on my mark ii to the supeior xg
unit (as per the sage recommendation of the delphic oracle of yamaha pianos,
pianobench@...), i kept a laptop with windows 95 specificallyjust to run
giebler

i tried every which way to get giebler to run on xp, but it won't

alternatively, you could use partition magic to partition a small piece of a
hard drive, install windows 95 and boot into that partition when you need to
(i am sure windows 95 disks are still floating around) and run giebler

the program is fairly inexpensive (less than $30??) and i think giebler
still sells it

Re: [disklavier] Problem with conversion using ESEQ2MIDI

2003-10-28 by Carol Beigel

I just checked some of my backups and found the same thing. Most of the
time, ESEQ files are .fil files and they easily convert to MIDI files using
ESEQ2MID program. However, some of them are YFD files that show up when
using Giebler to QX3 files, and I can do nothing with them. Anyone know
what the difference is?

Re: [disklavier] Problem with conversion using ESEQ2MIDI

2003-10-28 by Robert Welcyng

Carol, a *.YDF file is what the Giebler Utility writes to hard drive
when it copies a song from a PianoSoft diskette. I've never looked at
the binary code to see how it differs from a *.fil. Giebler will
convert a *.YDF file to a *.mid file, however.

Hi

Are these files ones that you have downloaded using Yamaha's download
program?
If so then you would have used a 1.4Meg floppy. If this IS correct
then dkvcopy will only work in DOS AND on a 720K disk NOT a 1.4Meg.
Also then you use their download program it changes it disk so that
the PC will not read it.

There is a program coming soon that will help. But in the meantime
mail me direct for further help.

Carol

I see that they are from that DOS program. When our program is
finnished it will work in Windows. Also, but don't quote me on this"
it should work under XP as well.

Re: [disklavier] Problem with conversion using ESEQ2MIDI

2003-10-28 by Carol Beigel

Thank you once again Robert! I had stored some .YDF files on my hard drive
of the computer I use all the time but not the one I run Giebler. Once I
copied those .YDF files to the hard drive of my Windows 3.1 computer and ran
Giebler, everything worked out fine and I created a Yamaha disk.

It is interesting, though, that ESEQ2MID sees a .fil file, but not a .YDF
file. It just shows that you need to choose which software you are going to
use to backup your Yamaha disks, as the dkvutils and Giebler are not
compatable.

Apparently, if you copy .YDF files from a hard drive to a floppy disk, then
copy them back to your hard drive using Giebler, Giebler sees them as QX3
files.

RE: [disklavier] Re: Problem with conversion using ESEQ2MIDI

2003-10-28 by Lit Wong

There is a command line tool in XP (or other versions of Windows) called
DISKCOPY.exe. You can use it to make copies of 720K or 1.44M floppy
discs. I downloaded a couple of discs from yamahamusicsoft.com and I
was able to make copies of them with the DISKCOPY.exe command. This
tool does a blind copy so it ignores the first sector (with a bunch of
F6's). I haven't tried but I think it would work for other "copy
protected" discs.

BTW, if you have a hard time finding 720K discs, or want to just use
regular 1.44M discs, just use some non-clear tape to tape over one of
the holes on a 1.44M disc and reformat it to 720K.

RE: [disklavier] Re: Problem with conversion using ESEQ2MIDI

2003-10-29 by Buddhika Wije

Hi,

Thanks will try diskcopy using dos.

With regards to the disks, I think it is much faster to use the freely
available 1.4m disks and use the discopy than go looking to buy the old
720s. I do use the tape as you do.

Thanks

Re: Problem with conversion using ESEQ2MIDI

2003-10-29 by Jorge Fernandez Moreno

I have a giebler'r ultilies version that i brought last june.
I don“t think that the version is new.

IT WORKS UNDER XP!

But only with 2HD disks. (1.4 megs)

I have used it a few times, mainly when I download files from yamaha
with the yamaha downloader that writes the "special yamaha format"

Extract indiviual files to HD and the convert them to midi also with
the giebler utility.

All this under XP.

If the .FIL in not in a protectyed yamaha disk I allways use
SEQ2MIDI whith no problems.

I hope this helps.

Re: Problem ESEQ2MIDI resolve: But tempo question remains!

2003-10-30 by bpsafran

Hi everyone:

I resolved the problem with ESEQ2MIDI. I got things to work
when I used the dvcopy program on a true 720K DD (not HD) disk.
The original songs were on a HD disk and I had to copy them to
a DD disk to get dvcopy and then ESEQ2MIDI to work properly.

I now have the .FIL coverted to Midi and can edit them etc.
However, I don't understand the tempo -- it says 117bpm for all the
songs; yet, they all play at different actual tempos.

Can anyone advise me on how to get the midi file to show the correct
tempo and time signature or otherwise correct the timing of the files.
Note: they all sound correct. But the notation (seen on the screen
of my Clavinova or in a sequencer) looks strange and I think this is
due to the fact that the midi tempo is always set to 117 in the
conversion.

Thanks

Sam

First of all, the Tempo of 117bpm is the DEFAULT for Pianosoft Disks.
The pianosoft disk are recorded live and NOT to any tempo so there is
no point in changing it from the default.

You could load the midi file into a sequencer and change the tempo,
BUT again there would be no point as the pianist would not adhere to
it as it was played lve.

Yes they are correct and yes the notation is a mess. Yet again this
is because it was played in REAL time. This has nothing to do with
the tempo but more to do with Quantisation, (time slots per second).

When the songs are recorded the piano has to put each note / event
into a "time slot". The more time slots per second you have the more
acurrate the music will be. The problem occures when you try to
display the music as there are far less time slots to put the notes
into. This means some of the notes have to go into the same slots and
others have to go into the next slots. If you record the music with
say 960 time slots / second then you need to display it at 960.
However sequencers can only display at a much lower resolution. This
is because there are only so many notes that can be displayed in a
bar. (hemi-demi-semi-quaver).

Hope that helps.

Re: [disklavier] Re: Problem ESEQ2MIDI resolve: But tempo question remains!

Good morning, everyone.

In a message dated 10/30/03 4:50:07 AM, Sam writes:

Note: they all sound correct. But the notation (seen on the screen

due to the fact that the midi tempo is always set to 117 in the

The earliest model Disklaviers did not respond to tempo changes in the song file. It was true that you could change the tempo on the front panel of the instrument, but you could not create a song with embedded tempo changes and have those changes recognized by instrument during playback.

So, most recordings for Disklavier were made at a default tempo of 117 "in the old days." If it was a piano solo, the pianist recorded without listening to the metronome. Therefore, the notes did not line up musically with the beats as defined by the metronome.

Today, modern Disklaviers can recognize and respond to tempo changes in either an E-SEQ file or a SMF. This means that if you make a Disklavier recording, you can set the tempo to any number when you start recording, you can play to the metronome if you wish, you can further edit or insert tempos later in your sequencer, et cetera. Any such recordings will play fine on a modern Disklavier and some of the intermediate models (at least from the Mark II onward), but the tempo changes will not be recognized on the earliest Disklaviers and will not play properly on them.

NOTE: The modern Disklaviers do have a disk conversion function that will convert songs to "Piano1" type. During this conversion process, the song data will be changed so that it plays properly at a single default tempo of 117.

When Yamaha masters modern Disklavier recordings, it runs them through a tool that changes the data stream so that the song files play the same way at the single tempo setting of 117. That way, the Yamaha-published Disklavier software is backwardly compatible with the earliest Disklaviers.

Let's say that someone makes a MIDI file for Disklavier in which all of the notes line up to logical beats and barlines. That file will be readable by any device or software program with a notation display--such as a CVP 200 series Clavinova or Finale. However, if that same file is mastered and published by Yamaha specifically for Disklavier, the data will be altered so that it plays properly on all Disklaviers, but the notation will not be displayed in a musically readable way, and there will be a single tempo of 117.
