A have an old disklavier that plays only 720k floppy.I attached a
laptop and it works fine. My problem is that I cannot adjust the
volume while the piano is playing. Im using Vanbasco and Cakewalk.
I guess this is the disadvantage using a laptop rather than playing
it with the regular diskette w/c can be adjusted as I please. Thanks
for any help.

Since you are using Vanbasco, I assume you are using standard MIDI files.
Perhaps the volume (controller 7) is set too high in the MIDI data. Try
running the Veloset program on some of those MIDI files and turning the
volume down to 60. You could also try the new Yamplayer which plays Yamaha
ESEQ files from a play list.

You did not mention which model DKV you own. When I send a song into
the MIDI port of my Mark I, the DKV's volume control knob does affect
the DKV's loudness while it is playing. You might check to be sure that
the "Volume" button is engaged when you twist the knob.

Correction: I meant to say "Mark II".

Robert,

I have a Yamaha Piano Player Control Wagon PPG10R from Japan. My volume control can adjust from (-2) to (+10) but does not respond when I play the piano from a laptop. Thanks for any help.

Evidently, then, the Volume control on the Wagon model does not control
MIDI loudness as it does on the Mark II and later models. You might
wish to confirm that with someone like Bill Brandom: BBrandom@...

Two work-arounds that occur to me are hardly elegant:

1) While the MIDI file is open in Cakewalk, successively scale by some
percentage (or reduce by some constant) the velocities of the piano
track. You could start by scaling to 90% and keep applying that
percentage until the sound output drops sufficiently for you. Velocity
scaling is a feature of Pro Audio 9, but may not be a feature of lighter
versions. PG Music's Power Tracks also will allow you to scale and play
MIDI files. (There may exist other applications or hardware devices
that would scale MIDI velocities on the fly, but I'm not aware of them.)

2. Use Giebler Utilities to convert your MIDIs to E-SEQ and write them
to PianoSoft-like 720K diskettes.
