Floppy Disk for the Mark IV? You have to be KIDDING ME!

Floppy Disk for the Mark IV? You have to be KIDDING ME!

2008-03-18 by careywolchok

Ok - new to the group. Just got a Mark IV Disklavier, looks great.
Problem is, went to purchase some files from yamahamusicsoft.com
tonight, and when I downloaded the files, the yamaha musicsoft
downloaded told me to insert a FLOPPY DISK into Drive A. You have to
be kidding me? Drive A? I have not seen a floppy disk drive in years,
the salesman at the store told me I could save all the files on my 2gb
Flash USB memory card, and plug it directly into the Disklavier.
However, the files which I downloaded onto my computer show up
as "YAMAHA MSD" files, and appear with a key icon next to the file
name. Anyone know how to open these files and put them directly onto
the USB memory card? I am going to be quite upset if I have to go out
and purchase a floppy drive for my laptop here...
THanks,
C. R. Wolchok

I don't have an answer for you, but I do have a suggestion...

Have you tried downloading the songs you want directly to the piano via the PDA? I other words, don't do your purchase on the yamaha web site, do it instead from the piano...

Replying to my own message for a correction...I've made the assumption here that you have your piano connected to the internet...you might not have done that (yet).

Thanks an interesting approach. Another "sales line"
was that it would be easy to connect the Disklavier
MarkIV to my home wifi netwrk. Now, they salesmen are
telling me to go out and buy two Buffalo AirStation
125 High Power Wireless Broadband routers with AOSS
in order to get the Disklavier and my network to
communicate. Unfortunately, this wifi hardware is no
longer made or for sale. Any ideas? What hardware are
others using to connect to Wifi?
Many thanks,
Carey .

I also have a Mark IV and talk to Yamaha about connecting it to my
network. I have both wired and wireless and prefer wired. I never
thought I'd need an ethernet port in my formal living room so I
never pulled a wire there when the house was built. :-) When I
talked to Yamaha they mentioned only Buffalo devices including a
Buffalo wireless bridge. I initially connected my piano via a CAT5
wire strung across the floor to a NetGear 10/100/1000 switch but
recently installed a Linksys Wireless Bridge and it worked without a
hitch. I don't have any Buffalo devices! I have a Sonicwall
firewall, NetGear switches, and Linksys Bridge. Any network device
should work. Not sure if that was helpful but.....
Have a good day.

Re: Floppy Disk for the Mark IV? You have to be KIDDING ME!

2008-03-19 by jheitzeb1

I had no problems with my existing airport network to connect wirelessly to my Mark IV. I
was able to transfer files from my computer (Mac) to the Mark IV without changing or
adding anything back a few years ago.

To take advantage of the newer features (i.e. the lovely disklavier radio transmissions) I
did need to add a airport express station plugged into a wall socket near my disklavier to
access this feature. The airport express station is unobtrusive and works great!

Re: Floppy Disk for the Mark IV? You have to be KIDDING ME!

2008-06-18 by brijagarwal

Thanks to Don and Steven! I'm new to the group and would appreciate
some input regarding choosing between the Linksys wireless Ethernet
bridge and the Netgear wall-plugged Ethernet.

I was able to get my Mark IV to wirelessly connect to the Internet
with the Linksys wireless Ethernet bridge by first running an
Ethernet cable between the Mark IV and my router (I guess to give the
Mark IV the "scent" or whatever of Internet) and then by
disconnecting the Mark IV from the router and running the Ethernet
cable directly between the Mark IV and the Linksys wireless bridge.
HOWEVER, if I do a shutdown of the Disklavier, the Linksys wireless
connection stops working. That is, if I ever power down the
Disklavier, I am required to re-run the Ethernet cable between the
router and the Mark IV to again remind the Mark IV of the "scent" of
Internet, after which I can reconnect the Linksys wireless bridge and
it works. (I seemed to have this same problem when I went into
STANDBY mode, but I figured out that I just need to wait ten minutes
after a return to active mode to connect with the Internet.) This
could prove to be a class "A" hassle over time, particularly if I
have to power down and disconnect the Disklavier every few months.

Don, have you had these issues with your Linksys wireless Ethernet
bridge? If so, have you resolved them?

Steven, does the Netgear wall-plugged Ethernet have any issues like
this?

I don't think I have any mis-configuration of the Linksys wireless
Ethernet bridge since I can connect my laptop or my desktop to the
Linksys bridge and it automatically works right away. Did anyone
else have any other thoughts?

Many thanks to all, and I appreciate your input.

Brij

Connection questions

2008-06-18 by dcolema2001

Hi Brij. Regarding the re-connection of the Linksys bridge... I put
my Mark IV to sleep/standby every evening and turn it back on when
I'd like to use it (at least every other day). I have not had any
connection issues with this process. I listen to the Disklavier
Radio freguently. As a side note; Due to a recent problem, I
powered it all the way down and only because of an issue playing
purchased music (not radio). The remote PDA looked as if it was
playing but it would not and 'SYNC' would come on. I called support
and was told that I should power it all the way down and leave it
off for 15 minutes at least once a week. (I did that and it resolved
my SYNC problem) I don't know if I'll do it that often as it had
been working fine for months with no problems but at least I know
what to do next time I have an issue. My point is that since I have
powered it all the way down, I have not tried to re-connect to play
the 'Radio' or connect to the Internet I will do that in the next
couple days and report back. Have a good day.

Brij, as I stated in my response, I powered off my Mark IV the other
day per Yamaha support but did not connect to Radio. Today I
connected to Disklavier Radio with no issues. It came right up.
Not sure why yours does not.

Thanks, Don. That's encouraging, at least, meaning that the DK should have the capability to work flawlessly.

Re: Connection questions

Problem is SOLVED!

Don, I didn't ask specifically, but what Linksys adapter are you
using? I was having my problems with a Linksys WET54G ("Ethernet
bridge") that had been loaned to me by the Yamaha dealer (they
couldn't get it to work either). HOWEVER, Fredy at Yamaha customer
service loaned me a different device, specifically a Linksys WGA54G
("game adapter")that worked immediately and flawlessly. (Thanks,
Fredy!) The shutdown/restart issue is completely resolved. Are you
using the WET or the WGA device?

Thanks,

Brij
