Video of Disklavier with cool computer MIDI effects

2008-08-30 by David Broman

Hi, everybody.

If you're curious what kinds of weird and fun things you can do when you hook up your Disklavier to a computer, you might enjoy this video I uploaded:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-OF-U744FqQ

As I play each note, the MIDI out gets routed to a computer sequencer, running a delay octave MIDI effect, with its MIDI out routed back into the Yamaha Disklavier. This causes every keypress to be duplicated down several octaves, with delays between each note. I used Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 with one of its built-in MIDI effects, but I'm sure most decent sequencers will be able to do this and other fun things.

Hope you enjoy!

Enjoyed the video, David. My kids love to make videos and pretend
they are playing and singing while the piano plays ... provides a lot
of laughs around here at holidays.

Have you got any new midis available? ... I believe you had one disk
on CD Baby that I bought last year.

Thanks
Joan

Thanks for that video Dave. Can you post or send me step by step
instruction on how to do the midi tricks. I am connected via wireless
router, running xp sp2

Thanks

Terry

Hi, Joan, glad you enjoyed the video. I don't have any new MIDIs at the moment; we're still focusing on the first CD.

RE: [disklavier] Re: Video of Disklavier with cool computer MIDI effects

Hi, Terry!

The instructions would depend a lot on the sequencer you're using, and probably on the piano, too. I don't have one of those new Mark IV's with their fancy internet connections. :-). My connection to the computer is through wired MIDI. My XP sp2 computer has a MIDI interface that exposes a MIDI in & MIDI out. I connect my piano's MIDI out to the interface's MIDI in, and the piano's MIDI in to the interface's MIDI out. Then, from the sequencer, it sees the piano's MIDI connection like it would any other MIDI device. Is that similar to how your wireless connection works? Also, what kind of sequencer do you run? If it's not Cakewalk, I wouldn't be able to give you specific instructions that work for you.

                                                Thanks,
                                                Dave

Very nice David.
Something like it was used by Robert Fripp with a tape loop between two reel-to-reel tape recorders connected together. He calls it Frippertronics.
Take a look here:

Thanks Dave,

I think I am going to be better off using hardwire, I do not even
know if it is possible on a wireless network or not. I do appreciate
your input and that was really neat what you did. I wish Yamaha would
add to their site a non musician site showing easy fun things to do
with the mk4.

Thanks again

Terry
