Downloading MIDI files using a MacBook

Downloading MIDI files using a MacBook

2008-12-20 by breppond

I am new to the user group. I have a Disklavier Mark 4. I have a problem and am looking for
some help. I use a MacBook for my MIDI downloads. When I downloaded MIDI files onto a
formatted floppy or a flash drive, I got an error message on my Disklavier remote. I am
assuming that this has something to do with using a Mac. Is there something I need to do in
addition to just downloading onto a formatted floppy?

I saw the thread on the use of QMidi. Is that something I should be using for the download?

Greetings breppond,

floppies are dead or should be. yours may be a problem with
formatting.

forget the floppies and get Qmidi and or Rondo. They are both cheap
shareware. get a USB/MIDI interface, M-Audio or Roland seems to be the
best. you will never want to use a floppy again. you can also get a
WIDI wireless MIDI interface if you like wireless or if the Mark 4
will take audio encoded MIDI input you can get an airport express and
play your MIDI from Itunes by converting it with Mid2PianoCD. To use
Mid2PianoCD you would need a PC but may be able to use it from a
windows emulation or on an Intel Mac. You can also use Itunes in wired
mode but wireless is really cool.

Thank you. I understand that I need to drop the floppy. I also understand that I need to
get QMidi or Rondo. After that, you lost me. Can you call me or walk me through this a
little more speciifically. My cell is 425-891-1388.

I appreciate the time you can give me to help me through this.

Re: Downloading MIDI files using a MacBook

2008-12-20 by Mario Ajero

Hi Ben,

Welcome to the group.

I also use a MacBook Pro to load up MIDI files to our Mark IV.

Sometimes the Mark IV is fussy about the formatting of vertain flash drives and floppies,
especially if they've been formatted on a Mac.

The most convenient way of loading MIDI files for me is through the network. If your Mark
IV is on your local network, you should see it in your Finder sidebar under Shared or
Network, depending what OS you're on.

Just copy MIDI files to the FromToPC folder.

I hope that answers your question.

Feel free to contact me if I misunderstood you.

Greetings Spencer_Lists,

Sorry about the reply to the whole list. I hate it when others do this
and managed to do it myself. It seems to be almost random which
address a reply will be sent to so I guess I just have to examine the
outgoing message more carefully before sending it.

Greetings Allan,

If you have inputs for audio encoded MIDI on your Disklavier (some
models do some don't) you may be able to play from the Ipod. I have
heard that Disklaviers do not do well with MP3 files so this may not
work unless there is some way you can put WAV files on an Ipod. I have
read conflicting opinions on WAV capability on the Ipod. Can try it if
someone really wants to know but different pods might have different
capabilities. wav files will be huge so you need a major Ipod to fit
many of them. try some MP3, who knows they may work on your DKV.
fortunately they work fine on my LX players so I can play from Itunes,
Ipod CDs DVDs etc.

Re: Downloading MIDI files using a MacBook

2008-12-22 by jheitzeb1

You should be able to download your midis to your Laptop and then
access the From/To PC folder on the Disklavier Mark IV, directly from
the Laptop finder under shared devices. The dkv##### where ##### are
numbers, should appear in your finder window.

If you click on this device name, the following folders should appear
DNA, Document, FromToPC, MyPicture, Update.

You can move or copy the midi files that you download into the From/To
PC folder.

Using your prc remote that comes with the disklavier, you can view
those files that you transferred via WIFI network. You will have to
click on From/To PC on the handheld remote, then remember to click on
Function button and click on refresh. You have to refresh each time
after you load new midis onto the disklavier. You should then be able
to see the midis you put into this folder. The midis can be played
from the From/To PC folder, and by using the Function Button, you can
add them to your user library on your Disklavier Mark IV.

You do not need an airport express hooked to the disklavier to use the
wifi to the From/To PC folder. The airport express will allow you to
access the disklavier radio from your wifi internet and play it on
your disklavier mark iv. There are threads on this forum that
describe how to set up the airport express to do this. You can search
for keywords to find the threads that discuss this topic.

Hope this helps.

BTW, if you want to try transferring by floppy disk, make sure you are
transferring to a disk that is an IBM formatted disk (which is
readable and formatable by your Mac). I suspect that you did not have
an IBM formatted disk, but a Mac formatted one.

Joan

Gosh, I also forgot to mention, that you can put midis on a CD (only
one folder deep if you wish to organize them by folders) and these
will be readable as well by your Mark IV. You can also copy from the
CD to your Mark IV hard drive, too!

Merry Christmas and have fun loading on some midis to play on your
Mark IV there are a lot of nice classical piano songs online, as well
as some sites that have some nice midis as well, including the 'files'
section of this forum.

Enjoy!
Joan

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
