Latest DKV Browser .86 Mark IV

2009-01-01 by jheitzeb1

I have been testing the Mac Version of DKV Browser that Kevin has so
kindly written to work with the Mark IV Disklavier via wifi.

Goto the following URL: (then click on downloads)

http://dkvbrowser.sourceforge.net/

Thanks for the New Year's surprise. Suggest that users try it out as
it offers a lot more than the virtual PRC and is fun to use.

I run both the virtual PRC and the latest DKV Browser from my Mac and
control the piano from a different room in my house. My husband also
has this same software and can control it from his office in another
area of the house as well.

Also a reminder that discountpiano software supplier in Idaho is
having a 40% closeout on all software. I placed a big order yesterday
and can't wait for the new midis for my Mark IV.

URL:
http://www.discountpianosoftware.com/

I must say that the Mark IV Disklavier's is one of the nicest
investments I have ever made. I really enjoy the continual piano
music. My granddaughters even learned to play Noel during a visit.

It is also so nice to have a group of great persons to communicate
with about all the Disklavier stuff here on the Yamaha forum.

Happy New Year All!
Joan

[disklavier] Latest DKV Browser .86 Mark IV

2009-01-12 by Mike Moore

Thanks for this tip. I'm struggling with a more fundamental problem
before I can take advantage of this new software. The virtual PRC on my
Mac seems to have gone dark for some reason. I did have a network issue
with my airport software and have now replaced the base station with
Apple's new Airport Extreme 802.11n flavor. The trouble is the network
no longer recognizes or sees the DKV Mark IV that we have. The
handheld PRC still works just fine. It is just that I can no longer
connect by means of the Virtual PRC that I was able to use before from
my MAC. Any suggestions?

Many thanks.

Mike

Here are the steps to help you out.
Trash the current file called prcstart.php (or put it in a temporary
folder to trash later if you feel better about doing that).

Then connect to your Disklavier Mark IV via the 'Shared' (on the
right hand side of the finder window).

Click on the dkv###### to connect. You should see a series of folders
that are accessible: DNA, Document, From/To PC, MyPicture and Update.

Click on the DNA folder. You should see the file VirtualPRC.html.

CLICK ON VIRTUALPRC.html

As per the documentation that came with the last update to the Mark
IV, ... Enter the authorization: root as username and prcstart as
the password

follow the steps ... prcstart.php should download a new version
When you click on prcstart.php - it should run - Make a note of the IP
address that it finds.

Hope this helps.
Joan

How is your Disklavier connected to the network? Is it through a
remote Airport Express or hard wired to the Extreme base? If so, is
the Airport Express "n" compatible, and, if not, did you set up the
Extreme base station to be "802.11n, b and g compatible?" If using a
previous Airport Express, did you reconfigure it to extend your new
network?

Thanks for the interest. I haven't yet tried Joan's suggestion, and
will have to see whether that works or not.

The DKV is connected to my network by means of a wired ethernet
connection between a remote Airport Express and the DKV. The new
Airport Extreme (which is the 802.11n version) is also b and g
compatible. I know that because AirPort Utility recognizes the three
existing AE's in another part of the house, which are of the older b or
g variety. I did reconfigure each of the AEs when I installed the new
Airport Extreme. They are showing "green" and are recognized by the
Airport network when I check it via Airport Utility.

Regards.

Mike

Mike,

Can you see the shares from the piano? Can the piano use the internet features (Disklavier Radio)?

If either of those two things work, then you know that the piano is successfully connected to your network. If that's the case, Joan's suggestion for deleting the downloaded virtual PRC should work fine. The issue is that your piano has most likely received a new IP address, and part of what's in that downloaded PRC knows the old address.

-Kevin

Kevin -

Thanks for the response. I don't know what you mean by "see the shares
from the piano." As to the internet, no, I can no longer connect to
Disklavier Radio. When I make the attempt from the handheld PRC, I get
an error message stating that "IP Address setting is incorrect." That
certainly suggests that the IP address is now incompatible with both the
handheld PRC and the virtual PRC. Any thoughts?

Many thanks.

Wait, I'm confused.

Can your handheld PRC connect to the piano in order to play songs, etc? Putting the same question another way: Does the handheld PRC complain about the IP address when you try to connect to the piano, or when you tell the piano to connect to the Internet?

-Kevin

The problem only occurs when I try to connect the DKV to the internet.
The handheld PRC has no problem connecting to the DKV to play songs. My
Mac, however, can no longer activate the virtual PRC.

Okay, this *all* points to the wireless network not working. Unfortunately, I'm out of my element when it comes to Apple wireless access points.

Sorry I can't be of any more assistance.

Mike

Mike,

Can you see the shares from the piano? Can the piano use the internet
features (Disklavier Radio)?

If either of those two things work, then you know that the piano is
successfully connected to your network. If that's the case, Joan's
suggestion for deleting the downloaded virtual PRC should work fine.
The issue is that your piano has most likely received a new IP address,
and part of what's in that downloaded PRC knows the old address.

-Kevin

Regards.

Mike

How is your Disklavier connected to the network? Is it through a
remote Airport Express or hard wired to the Extreme base? If so, is
the Airport Express "n" compatible, and, if not, did you set up the
Extreme base station to be "802.11n, b and g compatible?" If using a
previous Airport Express, did you reconfigure it to extend your new
network?

Joan -

By the "shared" finder window, do you mean the "Network" window that I
access after hitting the "Finder" icon in the lower toolbar? I have not
been able to see the DKV icon there since this trouble started about 10
days ago. Before that, I was always able to find it some minutes after
I turned on the DKV.

RE: [disklavier] Re: Latest DKV Browser .86 Mark IV

2009-01-15 by Mike Moore

That's a good suggestion. I've rebooted the computer a few times, since
I log off regularly. But I did not reboot the DKV and its internet
connections (an ethernet cable to an Airport Express) at the same time.
I will try that and see if I have any success.

Many thanks.

Re: Latest DKV Browser .86 Mark IV

2009-01-15 by jheitzeb1

Today I was having trouble with my piano responding to the midis and
physically playing the keys. So i did unplug and rebooted my
disklavier. When I came downstairs to copy some files into the
From/To PC folder, I could not find the DKV##### in the shared devices
as before.

I did see it under the airport icon on the top menu bar and did select
it under that bar temporarily, turning airport off and on from that
icon toolbar. Eventually it did show up again under the shared devices.

So hopefully rebooting your disklavier will cause it to be seen on the
network.

Please let us know if you get results.

Re: [disklavier] Winter first aid for Disklaviers

2009-01-16 by Carol Beigel

I know this is going to sound silly to folks, but I have found that
during the heating season months, especially the longer the heat is on
in the house, the more problems people have with their Disklaviers.
The problem is static electricity. Sometimes just touching one of the
components will set off a charge that sends something else awry.

My suggestion is that you add some humidity to the room where your
piano is located. You need to get the humidity high enough to be able
to feel it on your skin - at least over 55% but less than 65%RH if
possible.

I also can share with you that many $100 plus service calls could have
been avoided if the DKV owner had just shut down the DKV, unplugged it
from the wall for a minute, plugged it back in, and rebooted the
system. Unplug the ethernet cable as well if that is how you have
connected it to the internet.

Also, when the PRC or tablet devices are not working, take the
battery out then put it back in. The most common failure I have found
on the PRC supposedly not working is that it is not recharging in the
cradle. If you see no light on the thing, it is not getting any
juice. Try plugging the power wire directly into the unit instead of
the cradle.

Just trying to help!

We don't have any static problems, here in the UK. But then again, we have a 3 wire mains supply, so the piano is connected to earth at all times. The most common problem I have found with the cradle is the connection from the the mains cable to the adaptor.

Also, I've seen a few fried batteries (to the extent where the battery cover has buckled). This is due to the battery heating up if the PRC is left on the cradle for a long time. My advice is to charge the battery until it is full and then not to put the PRC back into the cradle until the battery is running low again.

BTW, my main concern during winter is underfloor heating systems. I had to fix a Mark IV recently and had to get up from under the piano every 5 minutes to let my back cool down. Not too good for the piano either, I would have thought - it needed recalibrating and it was seriously out of tune.

Yes, I was finally able to revive the Virtual PRC through a rebooting exercise. So all is good.

RE: [disklavier] Re: Latest DKV Browser .86 Mark IV

2009-01-19 by Mike Moore

Now that my Virtual PRC is working again, I tried the DKV Browser this
weekend and was unable to get it to connect to my DKV. Must the
Virtual PRC be on at the same time or can the DKV Browser connect
independently? All I succeeded in getting was a message that the
Browser was trying to connect to the Disklavier, but when it did not
succeed after several minutes I turned it off. I did run the "test"
feature and it said it was able to successfully "ping" the DKV. It
simply was not able to make a connection, however.

Any thoughts?

Mike

Re: Latest DKV Browser .86 Mark IV

2009-01-19 by jheitzeb1

If you know the IP address for your Mark IV, you can open the
'preferences' in dkv browser software and enter the correct IP Address
into the box: Piano IP/hostname: ...
then click on 'apply'.

If you don't know the IP address for your Mark IV, I believe you can
enter the DKV##### (where # are numbers in the device, under 'shared'
in your Mac finder window)instead of the IP Address.

Hope this helps.

I hope to release version 0.88 in a few moments...That should automatically find your disklavier on the network (I hope...)

It has nothing to do with the virtual PRC, and should run just fine.

RE: [disklavier] Re: Latest DKV Browser .86 Mark IV

2009-02-06 by Mike Moore

Kevin -

I've downloaded version 0.88 and tried it a couple of times with no
success. I was able to get a successful "ping" when I ran the test on
the IP address for our DKV, but I was not able to connect when I went to
the next step. The program would just hang, advising it was searching
for the DKV, but it never made a connection. I finally had to go to
"Force Quit" to shut it down. Any suggestions?

I'm running the program on an iMac G5, which uses the PowerPC chip.

Regards.

Mike

Re: [disklavier] Re: Latest DKV Browser .86 Mark IV

2009-02-07 by Kevin Goroway

Mike,

I'd like to keep DKVBrowser support issues off of the disklavier mailing list, so I've redirected this response to both groups. You will need to join that group in order to respond (if you haven't already joined). You can join at the following link:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/dkvbrowser/

If you do respond to this email, please adjust the recipients so that it doesn't go back to the disklavier group.

With that out of the way, let me get to your question...

If version 0.88 didn't automatically find your piano (which I'm guessing it didn't since you mention the successful ping) it means that your computer isn't seeing the Samba shares (FromToPC, etc) that the piano advertises. That isn't terribly bad news...and it could be related to the way in which I am trying to find them.

The fact that you were able to ping the piano successfully, but still unable to get DKVBrowser to connect is troubling. The most obvious question that comes to mind is this:

What version of the Disklavier software is your piano running? If it is not version 2.10 or greater, DKVBrowser will not work. (Yamaha created an encrypted handshake in version 2.10, and DKVBrowser is written with that protocol in mind).

I think you may be the first Mac User on the PowerPC chip. If that is the case, I'm frankly surprised that it is working at all... The fact that it gets as far as it does (trying to connect, allowing you to see the preferences dialog in order to ping the piano) makes be believe that the PowerPC chip is not at all interfereing (and, it shouldn't, but I'm jaded.) What OS is your Mac running?

If it comes to it, I can tell you how to turn on some deep logging which would help me diagnose this problem. I have hope that we can make it work.

-Kevin

Kevin -

I've downloaded version 0.88 and tried it a couple of
times with no success. I was able to get a successful "ping" when I ran
the test on the IP address for our DKV, but I was not able to connect when I
went to the next step. The program would just hang, advising it was
searching for the DKV, but it never made a connection. I finally had to go
to "Force Quit" to shut it down. Any suggestions?

I'm running the program on an iMac G5, which uses
the PowerPC chip.

Regards.

Mike

I hope to release version 0.88 in a few moments...That should automatically
find your disklavier on the network (I hope...)

It has nothing to do with
the virtual PRC, and should run just fine.

Latest DKV Browser .86 Mark IV

If you know the IP address for your Mark IV, you can open
the
'preferences' in dkv browser software and enter the correct IP
Address
into the box: Piano IP/hostname: ...
then click on
'apply'.

If you don't know the IP address for your Mark IV, I believe you
can
enter the DKV##### (where # are numbers in the device, under
'shared'
in your Mac finder window)instead of the IP Address.

Hope
this helps.

Joan
