Sustaining pedal - Issue or not?

Sustaining pedal - Issue or not?

2010-01-03 by Joseph

Happy New Year

I have a DU1E3 and had the first of the Yamaha tunings. At that time my technician installed upgrade 2.20 CSP E3 V2.12. Since that upgrade it appears that the sustaining pedal doesn't occur as frequently as I remember or on songs that obviously call for it. My guestions are: 1) is there a program that I can install on my Windows PC that would allow me to look and see if the sustaining pedal is written into the midi file? and 2)is there an adjustment on the system for the sustaining pedal? and finally, could this all be in my imagination?

Cheers,
Joseph

It probably needs just a little adjustment. I believe the MIDI message for
the pedal is a Controller 7 message. IF you look inside the piano, while
depressing the pedal, is there any lost motion? In other words, can you
press the pedal down (any amount) before the damper felts start coming away
from the strings? If so, have the technician come back and check the
adjustment of the pedal.

Re: [disklavier] Sustaining pedal - Issue or not?

2010-01-03 by George F. Litterst

Good afternoon, everyone.

The MIDI message for the sustain pedal is controller 64. When it has a value of 0, the pedal is a rest. When it has a value of 127, it is fully depressed. If there is a value between 0 and 127, that value represents a partially depressed pedal.

If the file is a normal ".mid" file, the MIDI data can be checked in a sequencer. If the file is a ".fil" file, the file probably needs to be converted to a ".mid" file in order to be checked with a sequencer.

When checking for controller 64 data, one must be certain to look at data that applies to the piano part as opposed to an accompaniment part.

If you are able to email the file to me, I can tell you where the piano part has MIDI data.

PianoBench

Greetings George,

I also have a program on the following page called "list midi events to log" which will make a text file of all the events in the file.
it is a simple command box program that asks for a few things like path to the files and whether you want to list note events of not.
there is also a file called "using spencers utilities" on the same page that give some information on how to use this program and
others http://www.spencerserolls.com/Files4Download.html

Hi George,

I did what Carol suggested and checked the pedal movement , all seems well there.

Attached is a Midi file that was converted from a FIL that I think should contain some pedal.

Also googled some midi sequencing programs that show you what's happening. There were many but since I have many files to check I'd like to purchase one that you recommend. I only need one to read the instructions so I can determine what the file contains .

Thanks

Joseph

Hi Spencer,

The program sounds perfect for my needs.

I downloaded it and ran it, I do get the questions asking what I want to include but can't get a read out. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks
Joseph

Good evening, everyone.

Joseph, I received your MIDI file when you sent to me directly. The file contains a lot of sustain pedal messages. They are on/off messages (i.e. values 127 and 0) with no incremental messages.

Sonar Home Studio from Cakewalk is a very fine sequencer for under $100. It works on Windows systems.

Greetings Joseph,

I just found a little MIDI file player that I wrote a while ago that lists the events as they play. It only shows a single line
so you have to read fast but you can see when the pedal codes occur. I can make the text display better showing changes only when the
pedal goes on and off if this would help.

A better way to do this (but requires more in the way of computer skills) is to get MidiOX which is either free or very cheap. You
can monitor all MIDI activity and the display scrolls nicely. The program has all sorts of other features that make it very useful.
I use it to make sonar work with win 7 and the wavetable synth.

Re: [disklavier] Sustaining pedal - Issue or not?

2010-01-04 by Spencer_Lists

Greetings Spencer_Lists,

i was bored so i improved the little MIDI file player a little. it now shows the state of the sustain pedal on a separate line.
if anyone wants me to post this program, let me know.

Thanks

PianoBench

Re: [disklavier] Sustaining pedal - Issue or not?

Thanks George I will look into the Cakewalk program.

The question now is why doesn't the piano play what's written in the midi file and would I be able to correct the problem with the Cakewalk program.

Cheers,
Joseph

Re: [disklavier] Sustaining pedal - Issue or not?

2010-01-04 by Spencer_Lists

Greetings Joseph,

If the pedal events are on and off, not progressive, there should be no difference between the file and what the piano does.
Progressive or proportional events are subject to more interpretation. (The LX is an exception to this in that it creates progressive pedaling from
on/off pedaling on the fly) If a piano does not respond to a pedal on (controller 64 level 127)
and lift the dampers, there is a problem with the piano. There is nothing you can do in the MIDI file to fix it. If you have a piano that
has problems with progressive pedaling it may be useful to convert to on/off pedaling. I have a program that does that but any decent
modern solenoid player should not have problems with either on/off pedaling or any reasonable progressive pedaling.

If you have isolated problems with pedaling that are in the file, you can correct them in Cakewalk. If you have pervasive problems caused by
a mismatch between the source and target instrument or a problem with the target instrument that you can not fix by setup or regulation
you will more likely need to process the pedal data with programs dedicated to the task. Cakewalk has an application development language
(CAL) that you can use to automate the modification of MIDI events. I use other methods to do the same.

If you want things to sound right, the highest priority is to insure your player is performing correctly. It does not make sense to modify
well made files to match a badly regulated instrument. Badly made files or ones that just do not match the performance characteristics of your
instrument can (in certain cases) be improved by automatic methods but it is likely that you will need a lot of practice to be able to do this.

Be aware of the fact that much music available for free may not be intended to operate your instrument properly and that some of it is just
plain awful.

Re: Sustaining pedal - Issue

2010-03-01 by Joseph

Hi George,

My piano technician and Yamaha have been working on a resolution for the past 2 months. I'm happy to report a new circuit board resolved the problem.

Thank you for your help and advise.

Cheers,
Joseph
