DU1A Wiring

DU1A Wiring

2011-01-08 by jerrywinter59

If you have a DU1A and are willing to share some info about it, I would really appreciate it. I am trying to determine what the PS/2 port on the back of the DKC55RCD controller (labelled CD control) is connected to because I want to connect it to speaker jacks for my MarkII XG Disklavier. If you trace the CD Control cable that comes from the back of the piano, you may be able to see what the connection is on the other end. I am pretty sure that it must connect to the AUX in/out box under the keyboard and ultimately to the outlet box for speakers on the back of the piano. The 64 million dollar question is this: Is there also a sound card wired in or are the connections pretty straight forward? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Both the "To Host" and "CD Control" connectors are pure data connectors. "To Host" is a serial MIDI port, "CD Control" communicates with a processor under the keybed. They have no direct connection to any analog audio signals. There is a form of XG MIDI sound card incorporated in the DKC55RCD

Re: [disklavier] DU1A Wiring

For curiousity sake only - is this one of the differences between the DU1A and the MPX1Z (and similar) models? On the MPX1Z there is a db51xg card inside the piano, so I assumed most of the sound generation is from the piano rather than the controller.

Slight correction: the soundcard is located on the MN board inside the piano.

It could be that the din cable (CD Control) connects to just a board in the
amplifier. Try connecting those RCA plugs, R and L to a POWERED speaker and
see what happens.

Re: DU1A Wiring

2011-01-11 by jerrywinter59

Carol,

I'm confused. There aren't any RCA plugs at the back of the DKC55RCD, so I'm not sure what you are referring to. Also, the DU1A does not have an amplifier like the Mark III grand piano. It simply has a speaker outlet box, which also contains the power switch and a female connector for the power cord. I tried connecting different pins in the PS/2 connector of the DKC55RCD to a headphone, but I didn't hear any sound when I played a CD.

So the CD control cable connects to the sound card which in turn connects to the speaker outlet box on the back of the piano? Is that right?

Re: [disklavier] Re: DU1A Wiring

The reason Disklavier Control boxes are different for each model, among
other things, is that the boards they connect to are in different places.
Also, the logic that programs each model is different. That is why it would
be a stunning occurence if the DKC55RCD ( a box for the MarkIII Disklavier)
worked on a MarkII XG Disklavier.

I believe the DKC55RCD has an R and L Audio/Analog port to the right of the
CD Control plug. The din connector, I thought, goes from that CD Control to
a place in the audio amplifier - a box that comes with a MarkIII. That is
why I thought you might be able to just bypass the CD Control and connect
the R and L audio ports to a powered speaker.

The DU1A is an E3 Disklavier, which is different than a MarkIII Disklavier.
The logic is different.

Re: DU1A Wiring

Carol,

My DKC55RCD has a R and L Audio/Analog Midi in port but because it is an input port, not an output port I assumed that it wouldn't work to connect my powered speakers to that port. Also, the Mark III product manual indicates that there is not an audio amplifier for the upright, but it does have an amplifier for the grand. I'm guessing that the built in speakers for the Mark III grand are not powered independently of that amplifier, whereas the speakers that can be connected to the upright Mark III must be powered speakers.

Given what you indicated about the logic being different for each Disklavier, I am (happily) surprised that the controller for the Mark III works with my Mark II XG. Someone else commented that the CD port on the back of my DKC55RCD controller connects to an audio card that is built into the main electronics of the Mark III upright. The DKC-850 controller must have a similar card built into it. Otherwise, the cable that plugs into the CD port on the back of the DKC55RCD could not be ignored when the DKC-850 is used to replace it. I wonder if it is possible to somehow connect the CD port of the DKC55RCD to a sound card such as the Yamaha DB50XG, and then connect the sound card to external speakers?

Re: DU1A Wiring

2011-01-14 by athomik2001

The phono connectors on the back of the DKC55RCD are inputs. If the unit detects an analogue MIDI signal on one of the channels, it will convert both channels to digital data and split the channels into it's MIDI and audio components and send the MIDI part to control the piano and the audio part to both channels of the headphone/AUX OUT connections.
The CD Control connector (and the 15-pin D-type connector) only transmits/receives power and digital data. There is no analogue audio signal which could be used to send to an amplifier or powered speaker. The only point at which an audio signal can realistically be tapped into is the headphone box on the piano. Occasionally, dealers have had the DKC units stolen from their shop floor pianos. Unless the thieves have a matching Disklavier, the unit is completely useless to them and cannot be used to listen to audio or MIDI files.

BTW the DU1A is a Disklavier Mark III. The E3 version is the DU1E3
