48" Upright

48" Upright

Hi-

I have a chance to purchase an early '90's vintage disklavier
upright for under $7,000. According to the owner, it is a
one owner piano in excellent condition. I know that, in addition
to checking out the original bill-of-sale, that I can submit the
serial number to Yamaha for verification that it was made for
the US market, and that it was sold to the current owner.

What else do I need to be careful of? Any thoughts or opinions?

Thanks.

Suggest you pay a few dollars to have an independent RPT who knows Disklaviers
look it over and give you an appraisal. Typically, Disklaviers acquire mileage
faster than standard home pianos. Your RPT might make suggestions of work
needed which may affect your negotiations with the seller. Also be aware that
while Yamaha may be accommodating to you, their warranty does not extend beyond
the first owner. That may be a moot point as the warranty period for the
Disklavier portion is only five years and for the piano itself, ten years.

If the control panel is built into the lid of the piano, it won't have the
XG sounds (the background orchestration) unless the previous owner spent
some extra money on the DSR1 upgrade. It won't have the To Host port
either.

If it is an MX100, it will only use the old 2DD diskettes and only play ESEQ
files. If it is a later version, an MX100 mark II, it will at least play
MIDI format 0 files, but still only use those 2DD disks.

You could also purchase the DSR1 that would add all these features to an old
style - MIDI tone generator with XG sounds, MIDI ports, a To Host Port, and
the capability to use HDD disks and play and record MIDI format 0 and format
1 files. I think you can buty it with extra memory too.
