New list

New list

2004-09-14 by Larry Hendry

Welcome to the list if you have just joined and are checking the
archives. I hope this can be a good replacement for those who miss
the synthesizersdotcom list. Hopefully those who choose to bicker
and fight will stay away.

Continued rudeness to other members will be reason enough to be
kicked out so those decent folk who want to discuss synths in dot com
format and their music can enjoy a friendly format.

Re: New list

2004-09-14 by Dana Countryman

I'm in, Larry!
Great idea.

I just got off the phone with Guido, and we talked for over an hour
about the whole shutdown of the s.com newsgroup.

I'm not going to say anything bad about Roger, but his pulling the
plug on the newsgroup is the only thing I've seen him do that
makes him look childish and unprofessional.

True, there was some negativity lately, but please -- just don't
stoop to that level. Simple.

That being said, I'm ready to chat about synths, and NOT about
who's picking on who, who's grumpy -- blah, blah, blah.

I'm hoping that you -- Larry - will moderate this group and ban
people who consistently violate the rules.

Let's get back to what we all love - analog synthesis - and keep
the bickering off list.

We can ALL live together in a friendly synth world - whether it be
MOTM, dotcom, or any of the rest. It's all one big melting pot of
analog opportunity.

Cheers,

Well, the list needs to continue. We all have too many friends here.

I plan to do very little "moderating." Certainly, all of us Synth
Geeks will have a variety of different opinions. That is what makes
us the characters we are. And, the diversity is what makes us
strong. Hopefully, a new start will help people to understand that
and show a little adult-like respect for each other.

So many people are enjoying the synth that Roger makes. It would be
a shame if they could not share their enthusiasm with those of like
mind.

Thanks for our first meaningful post Dana, and for an awesome
website.

OT Old Moog records [was: New list]

2004-09-14 by Scott E.

Hey all and Dana,

I sure wish I had all of the old Moog records I bought back in the '70s
(including the Happy Moog). Sold them off in a garage sale in the '80s.

What was I thinking?

Hi Larry,

I just wanted to apologise for the recent 'bouncing' of email sent to
my address 'analogue@ip3.com'.

Until last night I had no idea that this was happening, so, I got in
touch with my ISP.

It turns out that they have sold the domain 'ip3.com' to the highest
bidder and didn't bother to tell me!

So I've had to get a new address.

I have set up a new email address 'analogue@ip3.co.uk' and have
deleted all instances of the old one from Yahoo Groups. I have
verified it and it's working fine.

Sorry for any inconvenience.

Best regards,

Clive.

OK.......So the post doesn't show the email addresses...

The address was ip3.com and is now ip3.co.uk

Hope that clarifies things.

Clive.

Stooge my Ribbon Controller!

2004-10-08 by Dana Countryman

Hi All,

I just wanted to share with you the fantastic job that Larry Hendry
and Dave Bradley did on my custom panel for my Doepfer
Ribbon Controller in the dotcom panel format:

This is the only panel of it's kind! Just one was made.

More info is at:

Thanks for a great job, Larry and Dave!

that is very cool... looks great as well... I am looking forward to the next round of "Stooge" Panels, as I too have some un-dot com modules to put into the "proper" looking panel...

Wow Dana that looks very good!
I'm pondering over the idea for months now to make my
MAQ 16/3 into .com format/style.
I wish I had more time to investigate. I would love to
integrate it.

Hi Dana,

The new module looks really good,

So is the one in the bottom right hand corner here:

http://www.danacountryman.com/Studio9_19_04Hi.jpg

I know which one we all find more pleasing to look at..

Well done to all the guys that make things happen in our
small world (Roger being the main man in my case).

I know it's taken you (and your Dad) quite a while to get the
controller the way you envisioned it....a job well done.

Can we expect to hear some music from your new controller?

I hope so.

Take care now,

Time for bed.

Clive.

Thanks, Marcel, Bernd-Michael and Clive --

I really haven't used the ribbon for anything special yet, but I'm in
the middle of recording now, and when I utilize the ribbon, I'll
post some more sounds...

Speaking of sounds.... just got my Stooge panel for the Blacet
Time Machine.

Anyone out there have a Time Machine? I'm on the fence about
actually putting one together and would like to hear from anyone
that has one, regarding how it stacks up to other delay units....

Thanks,

Yes, but how *good* is it? Is it worth $300+ ??
Why is it better than an outboard reverb/echo unit?

well now that all comes down to personal taste and budget...
If you have a rack mounted dealy that you love, and you can "easily" patch it in and out... then do that... that's currently what I do, I have my output go directly into a TC Electronic M300 all the time... and hit bypass if I dont want it in the chain... but I find it a very useful tool... I thought since you already "had" the panel and kit... add it in...

Dana, It is a BDD analog unit. It does not stack up well at all to
digital reverbs and clern digital delays if that is what you are
looking for. Typical of analog bucket brigades, upper frequency
suffers as the delay time increases.

This is a completely different animal that can do mny things with
digital jobbies cannot through the magic of voltage control. :-). I
have two and love playing with them. But, they are what they are.

Many of the classic chorus units from the past used these BDD type
chips.

Larry had a little typo--BBD is what he meant of course.

Dana, I think you will be surprised how much this unit sounds like the target sound you are
looking for on your current album. This truly provides a classic electronic music sound. It goes
great with things like spring reverbs (such as Scott Jusciw's incredible Neural Agonizer).

Remember that no one really had digital delay in the late 50s, 60s and early 70s (since this is
where I think your music often lies). They did have BBDs for a portion of that time I believe. I
am sure someone can better let us know when BBDs came into common studio and university usage.

Larry is exactly right! It is kind of crappy in a lo-fi incredible way. Does that make sense?
But fortunately not in a digital crappy way.

I personally love pairing my modular up with effects that traditionally were used with modulars.
Or at least seem like they should have been. I typically go, "Wow! That is how everyone made
that sound!"

A Dana Tip: Exclamation marks add energy to even the dullest sentences!!!

Okay, Todd -- your note really helps me to understand Larry's
posting! ;) Sounds like I'd really better build this module. I want
that RETRO sound, for sure.
I do have various delay and reverb units, including a Echoplex
and a vintage '70s spring reverb unit -- the MasterRoom XL-305.

Yikes. My publishing/editor past is coming back to haunt me.
Probably only you on this list, Todd, would be able to rib me
about my exclamation fetish (!)
Now, if I could only sprinkle a few fonts on this newsgroup...

Re: Stooge my Ribbon Controller!

I actually use my ribbon mostly with my TimeMachine. The quality
is that of BBD devices but with the ribbon I can have real time
control over the delay. I use it to shift the pitch either up
or down and with regen it creates some really neat swirl effects.

If I want a better quality set of delays I just use my Otari 4 track
reel to reel. I built a set of interfaces with level shifters and
feedback controls. No digital delays yet but I do have a PT2395
that's just waiting for some time as my next project ...

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
