Poly analog pads (the big question)

Poly analog pads (the big question)

2008-05-27 by phineousbonemachine

OK I love my dotcom, but I have 4 digisynths right now.

Yamaha Cs1x...first synth bought at a pawnshop for 125bucks.

Yamaha Cs6r...fun machine lots of wave forms to play with.

Novation x-station25. core of my small home demo rig. if you know
what it is then you know.......great controller.

Novation nova...I absolutly LOVE this little guy, and plan on buying
a supernova rack. I highly advise borrowing one for a weekend, fun
fun.

But, I want to add a poly analog synth to my setup.

Here is the big question:

I want polyphonic analog pads, with midi capabilites.
(synths like the roland mks-80 are great, but I want modern
stability. Trips to the tech for calibration is not an option.

So wich one?

Andromeda (such a fine beast),

Prophet 08 (nice sounds and great onboard sequencing features),

dave smith PEK?? (wonderfull marriage of the old and new! totally
unique)
keys or rack, either is fine.

I just can't make up my mind.

pros?....cons?

maybe some other suggestions?

and on a side note,

If I had the modules for 3 seperate sounds at once on the
dotcom.....what would I use to enable chord tracking? Thee age old
question =).

If someone out there knows of something with CV outs and ins that
would be a plus!

I find that I am constantly jamming with me dotcom (once the 960 gets
here I fear I will become a recluse LOL)

My nova is my main jamming tool..once I create a sound, I hop on the
dotcom and retro-engineer it! =) till I die this will remain my
favorite time sink.

I dont use me other synths all that much anymore.

Time for a studio upgrade.

Message boards have been slow due to the weekend so consider this
some food for thought.

any and all suggestions will be considered since this fall I am going
to buy one.

This post is all about gaining knowledge from those who have some or
all of these said boards and what they prefer in an analog poly.

TY in advance

The Studio Electronics Omega can be had 2, 4, 6, or 8 all analog
voices. Plus, you can add 303 and/or 2600 clone filters to those
voices individually as you see fit. (Start with the 2 voice and add 2
more as needed etc.)

The polydac on the ASM2 is available standalone and can do up to a
four voice modular analog setup as long as you have the modules for
that many voices and do not mind tuning it all... ;-)

Since you already have the controller the Prophet08 rack seems the
least costly route 8 analog voices.

I'm also looking for a nice analog poly, but I'm
through with unreliable vintage stuff, and there
aren't many newer options out there. I've been
drooling over the Prophet 08, but I keep reading mixed
comments about its sound. I wish someone would come up
with a cheap Juno clone or something, but it's not
likely to happen.

In the meanwhile, I've just got back my Ensoniq ESQ-1
(which a cousin borrowed), and it's a great hybrid
poly synth. No knobs, but extremely easy to program,
and with 3 oscs, 3 LFO's, and 4 envelopes per voice
(plus amplitude cross-modulation, osc sync, and other
nice tricks), it's a very powerful synth. It's also
very analog sounding. Can't believe people sell them
for less than $200. Oh well, such is life.

There are some MIDI/CV converters out there (try
Kenton or Doepfer) with multiple pitch/gate outputs
which can handle chords. I don't know any specific
models, though.

Same here. My Waldorf XT and Korg MS2000R don't see
much action anymore (which is bad because they're
great synths). I also bought an Emu MP7 Command
Station which I think I will end up selling, although
it works great as a drum machine.

Good luck finding the best for your needs. If you get
the Prophet 08, I would like to know what you think
about it.

Re: Poly analog pads (the big question)

The SE is very cool (high geekness factor in a good way) but is very
high priced. I would rather build another sequencer row in the dotcom
or for that price I could also chain 3 prophet08 rack's for 24voice.

Noone has mentioned the PEK,( I really only wanted one of those
evolver boxes anyway).

I am not a DIY guy (although I have yanked and rewired many guitar
pickups in my time)and I would buy a prebuilt polydac in dotcom
format in a heartbeat.

I am leaning twords the prophet 08 over the andromeda for various
reasons.

main reason is the prophet is capable of daisychaining for 8, 16, 24,
32...ect voices and can be rack mounted. plus who wouldn't want the
Prophet sound set in there arsenal.

But: I have heard that the andromeda is the polyanalog pad machine to
have.

If I had the cash ....I would buy a prophet 08 today, but seeing that
I don't I will remain on the fence.

The dream set up is 2 prophet 08 racks, 1 supernova rack, and my
dotcom 110 space. (currantly the dot com is only a full 22space
studio cab, but a new portable cab and my first 960 are ordered.

plus for a live rig, I like the fact that I could take one rack, a
controller, and me laptop and I am off.

Thankyou for the feedback

always a hard desion when upgrading.

OK, I'll mention the PEK. I have one and I really like both the
analog and digital sounds. It's a very versatile instrument, but it
has some drawbacks:

The rotary encoders turn infinitely in any direction, even after they
reach their maximum or minimum amount. Several have gone bad on me
but fortunately, the customer service is excellent.

In order to see the setting of an encoder, you have to move it just a
tiny bit to see the value in the display. One way around this problem
is to use the Psicraft Vyzor Evolver editor.

There is also a limitation of 4 voices. You can add individual voices
by adding Desktop Evolvers.

Good luck in your decision. The Andromeda sounds and seems fantastic,
the other two you mentioned a little less so (to me). I hope you find
something you love, and can live with for a long time - I've had my
roland jd-800 since they came out with it, and it's been my main
keyboard ever since - in fact it's been on continuously (I mean it's
been powered up) for most of those 16 years. Never a problem, except
for some outside incidents, like dropping an oberheim on it once and
breaking a few keys - otherwise it's been bulletproof. Hope you find
something like that!
