Drum Sounds on MonoMachine

Drum Sounds on MonoMachine

2005-02-18 by taco6

Hello. I am thinking about buying the MonoMachine. However, I'd love to know what the
drums sounds on it sound like. The elektron site is very thin in this area. What drum
machines are they based on? Elektron said they are based on the Machinedrum's E12
machine...but I have no idea what that sounds like. Out of the 24 sounds, how many are
bass and snare sounds? What are the other sounds? How tweakable are the sounds?

Elektron seems very timid in answering any questions about the drums on this machine.
While I understand they are not the focus of this machine, they will come in handy. I do
not want the MachineDrum only (I want the Sid and FM) and I cannot afford both. Can
someone post a beat using only the drum sounds from the MonoMachine...one that
utilizes all of the sounds including the snares?

Thank you for your time. JSRockit

check the machinedrum.com mp3's of the e12 machines. that might give
you some idea.
basically, they're pretty realistic sounding drums, kind of hip-hop-ish
(in my opinion).

> Out of the 24 sounds, how many are

they are samples, after all. so they're not incredibly tweakable in
the way that the MD
drums are (since those are synthesized). but there's still a lot of
mileage you can get out
of them. the synthesis page in the MnM only allows for retriggering
(makes a "stuttering"
sound or drum roll sound) as well as pitch up/down plus sample start
time. but then
you have to remember that you also have an excellent filter, delay
section and LFO's. so
you can do quite a lot with them.

of the 24 sounds, I think there's kick/snare/hats/ht/mt/lt and then
percussion from there
on up. so every two octaves have the same sounds mapped to them, but
pitched up
or down by the octave shift.

I will post a few demonstrations of the BeatBox to elektron-users.com in
a little bit.

If you use the filters on the drum sounds you can get
a wide range of sounds from the monomachine. also you
can the lfos to them and get even more sounds.

The monomachine is an awesome synth/beatbox machine
but don't expect it to sound anything like the
machinedrum. Just my two cents ;)

I'd go so far as to say don't expect to sound like anything else!

as above.

the real trick in the next couple years will be to make tracks that
don't have MONOMACHINE written all over them in big red,
amber and green letters. it's that distinctive a sound.

I understand the drums cannot compete with the MachineDrum, but I just want to
know if they are useful in their own right. It sounds like you can make them usable.
I find the MonoMachine more interesting if you can only buy one. Maybe later I will
buy the MachineDrum. I'd love to hear the drum sounds.

Well, I will be making hip-hop influenced stuff with this...so that is good. However, I
could not find anywhere on the machinedrum.com website where they break down
the sounds based on the machines. They do that for the MonoMachine...but not the
machinedrum...and the Monomachine does not really get into the drum sounds.
Especially the snares.

Re: [elektron] Drum Sounds on MonoMachine

taco,

the drums are ok, and can be useful, but if you're going to be making
anything at all drum-oriented it will be either "really cool" for you
or not very cool at all. No matter how you slice it you're working
with, what, 24 *short* samples that can be tweaked, but not in the same
variety of ways that one could tweak the same sample in a sampler or
software sampler.

Also remember that the drum sample generator (i don't want to be
confusing by saying "drum machine") on the MnM is MONOPHONIC. so if
you want to have more than one drum hitting simultaneously, you have to
add a second monophonic machine. I think for some, this leads to some
neat sounds... but if you just want to make a 'regular' drum track,
you're going to need some other source.

I would definitely try to find a MnM and a MD in person to play with
before making your decision. I've got both. If I had to choose
between the two, the MD would stay - but that's just me, and currently
I don't have to make that choice.

I won't be redundant posting what Scott says he's going to make, but
should he not post it soon just pop another mail up and I'll make a
short recording with a single trigger of each sample.

Something is malfunctioning at elektron-users.com for file uploads.
I'll get it fixed ASAP.

I've put the BeatBox examples at http://www.glaive.org/mp3/.
BeatBox 1, 2, and 4 are BeatBox + Reverb ( 2 tracks).
BeatBox 3 is 2 BeatBox Tracks, and 1 Dynamix (compressor) track.

Enjoy!

You could also download the OS updates on the Elektron sites. They
include the manuals so you can see a little bit more. Go to
monomachine> support or machinedrum> support.

Re: [elektron] Drum Sounds on MonoMachine

2005-02-20 by John Gellings

Thank you. I understand that the drum sounds are
going to get old quick...but if they are useful at
all, I can use they as a scratch pad...and then add
them later in my computer. I also understand that it
is 6 monophonic tracks. However, I am ok with 3-4
tracks of drums and 3-2 tracks of synths. I'm very
minimal generally speaking. I may have to buy
both...but right now, I'm going with the
Monomachine...because I can do drums on my computer (I
have a huge sample library). I cannot do what the
Monomachine offers in my computer. I won't buy for
another month...so I may change my mind and get a
Machinedrum. It really depends. The sample reduction
should help a bit with these drums.

Re: [elektron] Drum Sounds on MonoMachine

2005-02-20 by Scott Kellogg

I don't think the drum sounds will get old. They just are what they
are: a synth engine like the others. They are limited only by the
programming skills and imagination you bring to the Monomachine.
However, something like NI Battery 2 is, of course, a completely
different beast.

I think one of the best things about the MnM is the sequencer. My
friend and I sketched out a song form last night in the Song Sequencer,
and it took all of twenty minutes to program a spiffy little
arangement. The fact that you can keep the creative flow going all time
is one of the best features.

Re: [elektron] Drum Sounds on MonoMachine

Well said Scott, the sequencer is awesome on the MnM.
John if I hadn't had enough money to get both the MnM
and the MD and knowing what do of them both now I
would have chose the MnM. Use battery for your dums,
it's like haveing the MD.

Wow, those don't sound bad at all. I think I will be
fine with the Monomachine.

I've listened to Scott's and got excited...however, I
don't think hearing the dry samples, single trigerred,
would be redundant. I would be grateful if you could
do it.

Re: [elektron] Drum Sounds on MonoMachine

2005-02-21 by finite_sf

I have the MD, and the MnM. I picked up the MnM exactly one month ago,
from this post, my 25 birth day. ^_^

If I had to pick one, to keep, or one to pick up first, it would be
the MnM, HANDS DOWN! Reason being that I can use the drums on the MnM
and the other synth engines to make a full track. It has a great user
interface!

The MnM does not give you a fraction of the controll over the drum
sounds as the MD, but it is good enuff. Curently I dont have my studio
setup, as I am in the middle of a move, and thuse I use the MnM
exclusivly. I use 2-3 tracks devoted to drums, and the rest to what
ever, and it sounds real good. Did I mention it is easy to program?!? *_*

I'll have them both hooked up soon, and then I'll off load the drums
to the MD, and faten up the synths, by cloning them to a track
previously devoted to drums.
