bass and audio in (another attempt)

bass and audio in (another attempt)

1999-09-12 by ugo@xx.xxxxxx.xxx

hi all,

i apologize if this message has already gone through before.
my previous attempts were getting bounced back to me.this
message was sent directly off of the onelist site.

anyway........

i am planning on getting a new synth soon and
i have been considering a sidstation.

although i am interested in making all kinds of odd sounds, i am presently
most in need of synth basses. particularly tight, strong, beefy basses with
a very fast attack. how well does the sid perform this sort of task?
btw...if it helps at all to know my style...i write electro/gothic/industrial.

also, i noticed that the sid has an audio in but i couldnt find much info
on it. am i correct in assuming that this is for plugging other synths
into the sid's filter? how does it sound? i'd really like to have an analog
filter to occasionally use with my K5000s. it would be nice if i could just
get a sid and not have to get something like a waldorf 4-pole too.

thanks for the info!

Hi Chris,

It's OK, but I think you can get better if you ONLY need those basses. Try a
Waldorf Pulse, Novation Super BassStation or Korg Prophecy... it'll cost as much
as the SIDStation and it'll be better for what you need. On the other hand, the
SIDStation will take you to places you only dreamed of... ;-) The SIDStation can
do NEW things and that's something the other synths I mentioned, won't do.

> ...audio in...for plugging other synths into the sid's filter?

Correct indeed !

> how does it sound?

Loooooooovely !!!!! This is one of the things why I love the SIDStation sooo much
! Forget about the filters in any other synth: the SIDStation beats them all
(well, the Access Virus' filters also sound delicious... ;-). If I remember
correctly, the SIDStation filters are real analogue and they sound soooo smooth !
I just made some new bass patches that sound verrrry warm and smooth...

Well, then the SIDStation might be the right thing for you. I'm not sure, but I
think the Super BassStation also has an audio in, and the Waldorf Pulse Plus also
has an external in.

hi, thanks for the reply.

>It's OK, but I think you can get better if you ONLY need those basses.

basses are probably the biggest need but certainly not the only want.
my K5000 taught me what a real synth can be and i have become
spoiled by it. now i only want to get synths that are versitle and
interesting.
the next big synth i get will probably be a waldorf microwave xt but its
going to be a while before i can afford that. im sure the sid will happen
long before then.

>Try a Waldorf Pulse, Novation Super BassStation or Korg Prophecy...

yeah, i've thought about the pulse. i have never tried a prophecy but i've
checked out the Z1. the analog models sounded cool but kind of soul-less.
i get it would sit great in a mix but the tonal character of the synth just
didnt
seem unique enough to me.

in the prophecy's defence, i saw front line assembly using one and they
were getting some wild sounds out of it. however, wasnt able to see
if they were using it for basses too.

the only demo i have heard of the bass station is the one on novations
site. i'd like to hear more.

on the more expensive end of things, i'd love to get a supernova
some day. its not as unique souding as the sid or the XT but
i really dug its lush tone. kind of a comfortable surounding feel.

i'll have to check into them. i cant remember how much a super bass station
sells for but i think i can get a used pulse+ for around the same price as
the sid.
i gotta say though, right now i think the sid is my current pick. it just
seems so
interesting. going by the mps's on elektrons site, the sid almost seems like
it
has a life of its own.

thanks!

Hi Ugo,

> Now i only want to get synths that are versitle and interesting.

Well, the SID is very versatile and different from other synths. The Keyboards
(Germany) and Keys (Germany) reviews were great ! They gave the SIDStation a
very high rating. I've been away for two days, but I'm currently working on the
translations of those reviews. I hope to have them online soon.

An Access Virus is much better.

Just a tip: a Nova does the same and adds inputs and a vocoder for less money.

It has a life of its own !!! Highly recommended synth !!! And because of the
limited amount of SID chips left, it's definitely going to be a collectors item,
so it's a good investment as well (although I'll never sell mine).

hi,

please tell me when you do. i'd like to read them.

>An Access Virus is much better.

i agree. i tried the virus once last year and i liked it much
more than the Z1. (although i am facinated with the possibilites
of using physical modeling to create non real world sounds.)

today i got to try a microwave XT a Q. the Q sounds awsome
but i am in love with the XT.

i think that adding an XT and a Sid to my kit would be wonderfull.
that is the goal i will now be saving towards.

ps. as i write this i am listening to Elektron's Sidstation demos again :-)

Heya,

I just finished the first one and sent it to Elektron. I hope thy correct it
(because it isn't easy to translate German to English if none of the two are
your native language) and maybe they can put it online or so... we'll see.

> today i got to try a microwave XT a Q. the Q sounds awsome

Personally, I prefer the Virus over the Q... didn't like the Q at all as a
matter of fact... except for the stunning look.

The XT sounds nice, but is sometimes hard to make it fit in a mix. Personally,
I prefer the old Microwave I because it still has much more punch (but has less
features of course).

Isn't it a great machine?!
