Sid goes haywire when my power lead is accidently moved.....

2000-09-11 by ishq x

Hi to all on the list,

I just got hold of a secondhand sidstation (feel
a bit cheap saying that!) Very cool and totally creative synth...I have
found however that when i
accidently move the power lead whilst in patch/edit mode it switches the
unit on and off
possibly in rapid succession.this in turn causes the unit to lock or
specifically i cant access the patch mode..i can access the system mode
luckily. i have to do a system memory clear and re-initialise the memory
clearing everything in prder to get back into patch/edit mode. Its then fine
but has done it a couple of times.Howvever it's fine all the time you don't
move the sid or specifically the power connection.I guess a bit of bluetack
may help..has anyone else this problem....Ps i'm using the latest operating
system update...

best wishes,

ishq

I had this exact problem. After much abuse, the power supply leads became creased and frayed near the plug end and
sometimes the connection would break momentarily and reconnect quickly, flickering current to the Sidstation. After
this, any attempt to go into patch mode resulted in a hang. Clearing memory restored functionality.

Solution: Buy a solidly built power supply with one voltage and a single, properly sized adaptor tip hard wired into
the leads. I haven't had the problem ever since.

Alternately, maybe the power socket on the sidstation is coming loose on the inside and needs to be resoldered.
Scary.

I have exactly this same problem, if i fiddle around with or
the something touches the power lead my sidstation looses power thus corrupting
the memory, midi channel, etc. I emailed the group about this sort of
indirectly, just cause i noticed i could lower the noise floor by fiddling with
it, getting it "just right", but in doing so i posed the risk of losing all my
patches. Well i got an email from Daniel Hannson saying that he though it
might be the power supply as the lead shouldn't be so tempermental, it seems i
have bought the right one, but just to be on the safe side i'm picking up one
of the power supplies elektron now includes with orders(i got mine before they
did this). They're $25.00 with shipping, if your in the us from
drummachine.com. I'll email the list once mine arrives, hopefully it
alleviates some of the noise my sid puts out (hum...), and the freakishness of
touching the power lead.

Under normal circumstances i would be a little upset but seeing as the
quality of the synth is so cool and unusual i kind of let it off....My power
unit is an quite expensive 1
thats fine.i think it's just that the connector that pushes in.....its a
little lose but definately the correct size. It's a question of some bluetack
or a powersupply from elektron i think.....

Strangely though i had another minor error earlier which may be
different.....when trying to
save sysex data of sounds programmed it's fine in single patch export mode
but exports nothing(nothing when you try and load the patches back into the
sid) when you go to save the entire memory....when you import the 'saved
memory' it locks and patch one shows a patch with kind of smily faces
?whilst all the rest of the patches are empty.....ps i have not taken lsd
for some time or hollucinagenics (nice spelling)maybe i need some!

Its fine in single mode so i'm not to bothered....

I have lived to the same problem aswell! And i have fixed it!

I tried maaany different PSUs and surge-protectors awsell....

The thing that solved it thou was when i opened the machine and saw that
the cable running from the PSU jack wasn't properly soldered, and when i
tuched it, the cable, or the powerbutton the same problem as you guys had
appeared!!!!

I simply made a new soldering on the PSU jack and from that day my maching
is PERFECT. Now it can take any punishment!

Also, on the first 100units there is a problem that will have that effect
that your user memory will be erased if the machine runf on unclean power,
och if a peak runs throu the unit...... example.... if you turn on your
sidstation first, and then a BIIIG mixingdesk, you memory on the SidSation
may blow....!

I have installed a simple surge-protector where i put mut PSU now (you can
find one in any harwarestore) and that works perfect.
I'm also told that you can return your machine to ELEKTRON and they will
install a magic diode in the machine removing this problem aswell....!

Try this and you will once again fall in love with this wonderful machine!

I seemed to have solved the lose connector problem witha tight fitting lead
connector
and so no rapid on/off/on/off and memory freeze up....

....i can swing the sid above my head now and it stays on and ok....it still
sounds cool also...

cheers,
