Nice-to-know: create Emax CD from Zip image

Nice-to-know: create Emax CD from Zip image

2006-12-27 by esynthesist

Maybe this could be useful for some of you...
And maybe some of you already discovered this...

If you create backups of your Emax zipdisks (100M or 250M), e.g. with
EMXP, and you change the extension of the backupfile to .ISO, you can
burn this image directly to a CD and use it in your Emax.
Indeed: if you put this CD into the SCSI CD-drive connected to your
Emax, the Emax will recognize the disk. So the CD is immediately ready-
for-use !
(I tested it only with an EMAX-II).

This could be a nice way to backup your (unreliable) zipdisks :-)

Of course only 100MB or 250MB of the CD capacity is being used... so I
think I will add a feature to EMXP that will allow to create 512
MB .ISO CD images (besides reading CD-roms of course).
I don't know when this will be available. The next release of the EMXP-
freeware is in January, this one will support conversion from EmaxI/II
to Akai S1000 files and reading/writing/formatting Akai S1000 floppy
disks. Also the annoying samplerate conversion issues when converting
WAV to Emax will be removed - EMXP will do the job for you
automatically.

By the way: I'm also adding Emulator-III support. I think some of the
Emulator-III features will already be available in february (probably
reading/writing Emu-III zipdisks, reading Emu-III cdroms and converting
Emu-III samples to WAV-files).

Have fun in vintage emuland !

Will the next version be able to convert Akai S1000 -> Wav?

For those of you who may have been sleeping on EMXP, get it... it's
fantastic!

Sure, the next version supports Akai S1000->WAV conversion, and also
the other way around.

It just doesn't support Akai S1000->Emax yet (Emax->Akai S1000
however will be supported).

Akai features in v2.00 are:
- reading/writing/formatting Akai S1000 Floppy disks (HD and DD, but
I'm having problems with DD disks, so the DD-disk support will be
an "unverified" feature :-)
- reading/writing includes: S1000 sample files, S1000 program files
and S1000 operating system files (not drumfiles)
- Akai S1000 Sample <-> WAV conversion
- Emax I/II -> Akai S1000 programs/samples conversion
Akai CD's/Zip disks will not be supported (yet).

I'm doing final tests on the akai features, still finetuning some
parameter translations like envelope settings and filter settings.
But it's already being used in my studio and it looks fine :-)

By the way: the very same V2.00 will also include support for reading
Emax CD's or any other type of Emax HD. I'm putting it into EMXP
right now :-)

Version 2 will probably be released within 2 weeks...

THere is already an Akai S1000 to Wav converter, I used it a few years ago, simple program, works fine.

Might save you a bit of work e!!

Re: Nice-to-know: create Emax CD from Zip image

2006-12-30 by esynthesist

Yep, I know there are some Akai tools out there.

Wav <> AkaiS1000 was not my main focus at all.

I wanted
- to be able to read/write Akai floppy disks in Windows XP (--> which
is still a problem today, and ADisk doesn't even always work in
DOS...)
- to have a converter between Akai and Emax (--> to have a bridge
towards other sample conversion tools that don't support Emax but do
support Akai S1K)
Anyway, to make that Emax/Akai conversion feature, I needed Wavs from
Akai S1000 (as a starting point for testing) so I simply made that
function first. It's a very easy conversion, took me less than 1
hour :-)
