my quest to replace hd/floppy with internal pcmcia

my quest to replace hd/floppy with internal pcmcia

2007-09-12 by pauzetanker

get ready for a long post...

i was hoping make this post one where i had success in installing the
card reader and thanked all the past users for all the information
i've learned about the emax and putting such a thing into my "new" toy...

but so far i've been pretty dead in the water with this project. i'm
hoping that posting up what i've done for people to see will
eventually lead to some answers from folks in the group. my ultimate
goal is to ditch the floppy and LOUD hd, to solely rely on the card
reader so i can take this baby out to gigs, without fear of killing
the moving parts.

i have an emax hd running the 1.1 OS.

first order of business was to get a scsi card reader, but i wasn't
willing to pay $140 for it just yet. thanks to ebay, i managed to
score an SCM PCD-15B off ebay for cheap, which i know folks have been
using in MPCs and some other samplers, so i'm hoping there was no
compatibility problems there. the pcd-15b is a two-slot reader.

i also bought an old SCSI card for the PC, just to make sure that the
jumper settings on the pcd-15b could get me to SCSI ID 0. the pcd-15b
has only 3 sets of jumpers (as opposed to 4 on the pcd-47b). i found
out through trial and error that no jumpers = SCSI ID 0 for slot A.

i removed the HD, plugged in the pcd-15b, and booted from floppy.
with a pcmcia adapter/SD card in the pcd-15b, the emax would load the
software from floppy and then hang at the "Just a moment" screen.
however, if i booted without the pcmcia card in the reader, i managed
to have the OS load from floppy.

ok, so with the OS loaded and emax on, i put in my pcmcia card and
tell the emax to format hd. lo and behold, it works! i also have it
copy the OS over, which it does (very fast i might add). so things
are looking good.

now comes the test: i power down the emax, take out the floppy, and
try to boot from the pcmcia card. i get past diagnostics, but the
emax hangs at "just a moment". no good. i try booting from floppy
with the pcmcia card in the reader, and get the same result as before
-- it hangs on "just a moment".

i decide that i should eliminate the chance that maybe it's a
limitation due to me running 1.1 OS. so next order of business:
upgrade my emax with the SE upgrade, and move on to the Plus OS.

i buy some 800kb diskettes, format them in my emax, and boot my pc
into DOS 6.2. since i run my pc solely on SATA drives, DOS wasn't
seeing the FAT partition i created. however, it did see my USB flash
drive i had plugged in, so that's where i copied the necessary files to.

i used emaxutil to make the upgrade diskette, and pop it into my emax.
DISK ERROR. i try re-fromatting my diskette and re-making the SE
upgrade diskette a few times before i finally gave up.

ok so now i'm stuck. i'm open to any suggestions on the above, but
here are a couple thoughts:

-maybe the USB to floppy thing isn't a good idea to make the SE
upgrade disk, so i'm going to find a spare IDE drive to format into
FAT and copy my files to. hopefully this will result in a usable
upgrade disk.

- maybe ditch the pcd-15b? i guess i can save up $140 for a card
reader... :(

if you've made it this far, thanks for reading. hopefully soon i can
share a success story.

Wow, that's impressive rex. Keep me posted as I would also be interested in
setting something like this up.

I assume you have more than likely checked out this site:

Good luck!

Re: [emax] my quest to replace hd/floppy with internal pcmcia

2007-09-14 by ted Summers

Rex---

First things first- that pcmcia reader may have no scsi termination,
while the Drives that were used on the emax did have termination
resistors on them (which could be pulled if needed). That could be
your issue right there. Get a 50pin cable with another connector and
try attaching an internal terminator on the end of it and see if that
helps get rid of the error. I have a external SCSI zip, and on my
first boot with the hd, if the zip is off or not plugged in, it
hangs. but if the zip is there and plugged in it will boot right the
first time every time....

so you would have

emax logic -------- driver / reader --------------- terminator

Secondly- I would format the floppy in the emax, then put the OS
image onto it....

Just a couple of thoughts. Keep us posted. Would be cool to not have
any moving parts (ie zip or hd).....

Re: my quest to replace hd/floppy with internal pcmcia

2007-09-14 by pauzetanker

EXCELLENT suggestion, thanks!! I will try that tonight. I have a
feeling that you're right -- the whole termination thing is the issue,
as even when the reader is connected to my PC via the SCSI card, it
hangs for a bit while scanning the open slot B (since I only have a
pcmcia card in slot A). maybe a second pcmcia card will help, along
with the termination on the cable.

also, i've determined that my PC floppy drive can't format emax
diskettes AT ALL. probably due to the alignment of my PC floppy, as
it's pretty new. i think i'm going to try and hook up my emax floppy
to the pc to see if i can get it to format a disk.

i'll keep everyone posted...

UPDATE

2007-09-17 by pauzetanker

connecting the emax floppy to my pc didn't work at all -- the pc
couldn't recognize it. i have a feeling that the floppy controller on
my motherboard is probably too new.

i purchased a scsi cable with a second connector, a 50-pin to Ultra
connector converter, and an Ultra active terminator. i connected
everything as described in Ted's message. the result -- while the
emax doesn't boot off the card reader, it treats it like a hard
drive... ie, i can read/store banks! i still have to boot from floppy,
however. sometimes i have to reboot the emax a couple times before it
actually loads the OS. not an elegant solution, but it works.

so, i still need to figure out a way to run the SE upgrade on my emax.
unfortunately, i don't want to have to buy a separate PC just to make
an upgrade disk. i'll probably put a request to the group in its own
message so hopefully someone can make me a disk and i can get things
moving.

I think what he meant was to have both your floppy drive for the e-
max and the card reader connected to the e-max at the same time. When
you get it to boot, format the card with the OS read off the floppy.
Once that is done, shut down, disconnect the floppy, reboot and
hopefully it boots off the card.

???????????
1- I thought that since the Emax does a floppy seek at boot you still
have to have a floppy attached?
2- I thought that on the SCSI Multi-readers each slot will have a
seperate SCSI ID #?

Re: UPDATE

2007-09-20 by pauzetanker

Sorry I should have been more clear in my initial post:

1. I do have the floppy drive connected at all times during this
process -- the only component I would disconnect is the HDD. I would
try booting the emax from the card reader simply by not having a disk
in the floppy drive.

There is a trick to make the emax think there is a floppy connected by
putting a jumper on a certain pin on the floppy connector, but i
haven't gotten to that stage yet.

2. That is true -- each slot on the reader has a separate scsi id.
i've managed to get Slot A to SCSI ID 0 via the jumpers. so, without
the Plus OS, slot B will not function for me, even if i could get slot
A going. at least that's my theory, based on all the info here.

SUCCESS!!!

2007-09-26 by pauzetanker

well it's finally been accomplished! my emax is now floppy and hdd free.

funny story -- if you've been following my journey, i've been trying
to figure out how to make/run an SE upgrade disk on my emax, since i
don't have a PC that can make emax formatted disks. well, it turns out
my emax was already upgraded to SE, but the hdd only had OS 1.1 loaded.

after failing (a lot) with making an SE disk, i figured, what the
hell, i'll see what happens if i copy the Plus OS to my SD card and
try booting from it. so, using EMXP and the pcmcia card slot on an old
Dell laptop i had, i replaced the OS 1.1 that was copied to the SD
card with the Plus OS. Lo and behold, it boots! that meant my emax
was SE upgraded all along!! (it also meant i wasted a good two weeks
with my silly little experiments).

after a bit more tinkering, i found out that the pcd-15b has active
termination built in, so i didn't need the two-device scsi cable with
an added terminator at the end. scsi id 0 is Slot A, and scsi id 1 is
Slot B (as expected).

i used the "jumper on pin 26" trick to fool the emax into thinking
there was a floppy connected.

so, since i don't have a floppy now, i rely on that old Dell laptop's
pcmcia slot and EMXP to add banks on my SD or CF cards. works like a
charm.

formatting new cards is easy -- i just use the "copy hd" function to
copy from one scsi id to another. the whole thing overall is very
quick, and SILENT. :)

pictures of the card reader installed are linked below:

http://launch.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/emax/photos/view/c009?b=6

http://launch.ph.groups.yahoo.com/group/emax/photos/view/c009?b=7

now all i need is something to fill in the empty space above the card
reader...hmm...

Oh wow. That is incredibly cool; congrats on getting it to work! So
how quickly does it boot up from the card?

it boots up very quickly versus the stock config. you still see the
diagnostics screen for the same amount of time, but loading the OS
takes less than a second. loading banks is maybe one second.

Re: my quest to replace hd/floppy with internal pcmcia

2007-10-05 by chrisebert05

Hi,
Thanks for posting your story, it's quite inspirational!

I have an emax HD SE rack unit that I want to modify as you have done
and I had a few questions.
1) It looks like the actual sequence that worked was: attach the
PCMCIA reader; boot from floppy; format the PCMCIA card; copy the OS
(and data?) to the PCMCIA card from your Dell; boot from PCMCIA card.
Is that right? You modified jumpers because you didn't want the floppy
drive. I was going to leave mine in and poke a hole in the back of the
rack for my PCMCIA cards to fit in. Now that you've blazed the trail,
this seems like an evening's work or thereabouts -- am I missing
something?
2) I don't think I found the references to using SCM PCD-15Bs in MPCs.
Do you have a link? I can't find a PCD-15B on Ebay (you seem to have
bought them all! ;) Or maybe it's that I'm in the US and they're not
here?) Any advice on selecting a different compatible adapter?
3) I assume that any PCMCIA memory card will work, but I'd love to
know which ones you're using, if you don't mind saying. I'm not wildly
savvy about hardware, but my poor dear Emax needs help, so I'm trying
to muddle through.

Once again, thanks for an inspiring set of posts -- I've always wanted
to get rid of the noise of the hard drive, too, so the upgrade sounds
wonderful!

I am interested in doing this as well. I was looking potentially at
any SCSI reader on ebay. But then I saw, not all are writers, so be
careful when purchasing. This will take some leg work to get a list
of compatible flash r/w. But I am sure over time we can do it.

Ted

Re: my quest to replace hd/floppy with internal pcmcia

hi all...

glad that my story will benefit the group!

Chris, your sequence is pretty much correct. i'll just restate
everything that i did here, and feel free to ask questions if you need
me to clarify:

1) Connect empty Card Reader to Emax scsi port
2) Boot from floppy (card reader is still empty)
3) Insert PCMCIA card/flash memory into card reader
4) Format PCMCIA card using software from floppy***
5) Insert PCMCIA card into Dell laptop PCMCIA slot, copy Plus OS to
card using EMXP
6) Return card to Emax, remove floppy and boot from card

*** if your emax floppy is already equipped with the Plus OS, you
should be already set to boot from card after this step.

based on my experiences with the upgrade, the key thing is that you
NEED the Plus OS. the card reader won't work with the 1.1 OS.

i've used two types of card adapters: a Compact Flash card adapter,
and a SD card via a 5-1 adapter, and both worked fine. the adapters
themselves were generic brands that i don't remember. i'm sure any
pcmcia adapter or memory format will work just the same.

Regarding the PCD-15B, the page i found that described its use with
the mpc is here: http://www.midicase.com/card_reader_guide.htm

it seems the compatible card readers are from MicroTech, SCM,
Intermart, etc. card readers from those makers seem to share the
"PCD" prefix. from what i understand, you'll want to avoid the PCD-50
and -60 because the scsi id implementation is different and possibly
incompatible.

the microtech pcd-47B drives available on ebay moreso than the other
models, and as Ted mentioned certain ones may have the incorrect
firmware to allow for read/write capability. i located a firmware
replacement that supposedly fixes this, but i don't have a pcd-47B to
test this on. i can load it to the files section if anyone needs it
and wants to give it a shot.

i was REALLY lucky to get my PCD-15B on ebay for a good price (i'm in
Southern California, btw). people seem to know about the Microtech
drives -- which is why they go for an arm and a leg, but no one knew
about the SCM branded ones...keep trying, and good luck!

Since you live in SoCal- do you ever go to the computer swap meets
down there? I went to the one in Pomona a couple of times, and saw a
wide variety of stuff for good prices. I am sure if you went and
found some readers there, the group would have some interested
parties.....

Just a thought. :-)

Re: my quest to replace hd/floppy with internal pcmcia

i'm in san diego, and i actually go to the swap meets down here quite
often (it was actually my second stop after ebay in trying to score a
reader for myself!). if i come across any card readers, i'll be sure
to get them and offer them to the group. :)

Thanks for the reply -- I've started ordering parts, so it's in
process. Haven't seen many readers so far: Intermart seems to have
been bought by SCM, so I'm hoping their readers will work. I'll take
what I find, though. Pity it isn't USB, 'cause those are all over the
place.

Would have been faster to start all this, but had to help with a
wedding and practice my patience. <whew>

:) Chris
