Emax II RIP?

Emax II RIP?

2009-11-06 by Daniel Baum

Hi all,

My Emax II keyboard seems to have had it.

When I turn it on, all of the LEDs flash and click. I have not left it on
long enough to see what happens next. The actual catalyst for this seems to
have been that I moved the keyboard stand slightly so I could get to the
plugs at the back.

I opened it up and nothing appears obviously loose or burnt. I removed the
spade connectors connecting the power supply to the wall, and removed a
small amount of corrosion. I also removed and reseated the other power
supply connectors.

Just to see what would happen, I disconnected the hard disk.

None of the above made any difference, so my Emax II is in very large paper
weight mode.

This happened once before, and then stopped on its own. That time it was
also immediately after moving it, so it would appear there is something
loose.

Has anyone encountered this and have an idea what it might be?

Thanks,

D.

get some deoxit and remove all socketed ic 1 at a time deoxing each ic pin then reseating the ic chips this will usually sort every thing out

and if it still plays up then you need to overhaul your psu

Sounds like a plan. Thanks.

I assume that any electronic contact cleaner will do if the brand names over here are different?

If the symphtoms are:

Good auto check (all leds flash once when you turn it on, then Analog Processing one is gone as the OS is loaded from disk).

After it, All buttons and keys don't work.

Then I would suggest the IM 386 (R1125) sub CPU processor.

No, that's not it.

All LEDs flash and click repeatedly and rapidly. Sometimes I see the screen flashing too but I don't leave it on long enough to find out what happens next . . .

My Emax 1 rack did similar and it was the connection to the AC "in" on
the power supply.
1 leg of the AC wasn't getting through. I replace the power connection
both sides (connector and pins on the wires) and voila!

Regards.

Hi Ted,

Do you mean on the power supply itself or behind the power chord connector?

I could easily replace the spade connectors behind the power cord connector.
The only thing that I'm not sure about is whether the wires are long enough.

Replacing the connectors on the power supply sounds more involved (for me)

The first thing to do I suppose is check for resistance in the power supply
wires and see whether power is getting through (?)

Rgds,

D.

Am I right in thinking that some Emax IIs shipped with Switch mode PSUs?.. that's what this sounds like to me, a switch mode PSU not firing up to the correct voltage. Often the case when the startup caps dry out.
This will usually manifest itself by a stuttering flow of power on and off, hence the light and the clicking sound
If you are handy with a soldering iron, the startup caps are relatively easy to find and replace on most switch mode PSUs

Check which PSU yours has though

On the power supply itself my Emax has a 3 pin white header connector (2
wires are populated in the connector- brown and blue). The connection was
bad there.

Re: [emax] Re: Emax II RIP?

2009-11-06 by jammie

you can tell if its the switch mode psu as on the 1,s that are not have a
set of red wire going to a switch at the back of the ,machine for setting
us voltage 100-110 and european and japanese voltage of 220-240

the trans formers have 2 110 volt incomming wires in the primary windings
which are parrellel when wanting to make it 220-240 volts the red wire
switch at the back switches a relay and changes the 2 110v lines into series
110v +110v making 220-240 operation on the primary

thats why when setting the switch for voltage selection you need the machine
off if not you can seriously damage the psu on the later models they use
auto sensing voltage useing switching transisters and relays you can use a
emax 2 switch mode psu in a emax 1 you just dont have to connect the red
wires going tro the selection switch

Re: Emax II RIP?

get the PSU re-capped then.. it's probably just the startup cap that's gone, but if you are taking the supply out then you may as well replace them all.. it's a fairly simple job if you're au-fait with a soldering iron, just make sure you get the higher temp caps(105o) and ensure you put them in the right way round.. or they tend to explode ;-)

Good luck with it

Thanks everyone. It seems we have a diagnosis.

I won't be doing this myself, but it might be better if I get the right parts and find someone just to do the work.

The ones in the eBay link are for an Emax I.

Re: [emax] Re: Emax II RIP?

This one seems to be for the Emax II, and it's cheaper.

http://cgi.ebay.com/EMU-EMAX-2-RACK-Power-Supply-SURVIVAL-KIT-Basic_W0QQitemZ180414417826QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item2a01898ba2

Anyone know if this is right for my particular PSU?

Re: Emax II RIP?

Answering my own post: I wrote to the company that sells these power supplies, and got a very prompt answer.

The power supply is (I'm told) a simple 1-1 replacement for the one that I have and it looks like this is the option that I am going for.

So, before I press the "pay" button, has anyone else had experience with this company and/or one of its PSUs?

Answering my own post: I wrote to the company that sells these power supplies, and got a very prompt answer.

The power supply is (I'm told) a simple 1-1 replacement for the one that I have and it looks like this is the option that I am going for.

So, before I press the "pay" button, has anyone else had experience with this company and/or one of its PSUs?

  D.

I also ordered one and I'm supposed to be receiving it today.

Hopefully my Emax II should be back up and running quite soon.

Is there anything I should know about before installing it? According to the seller it is practically identical to the original and a simple swap.

My PSU was shipped today so I will recieve it in a week or two.
Please share your install procedure and tell us how it goes
there is anything else to do then to "just replace" it with the old one =)

Would you be willing to sell the old power supply?
Thanks,

Mine arrived yesterday. All I have had time to do was open the box and look at it.

I don't foresee any problems installing it. I will mark all of the plugs to make sure I plug them in the right way.

I probably won't have time to do it until the weekend.

I will post photos etc when I do it.

Hello,

I couldn't answer your private mail, because your server blocked my IP address for some reason.

Anyway, the answer is that whether I sell the old one or not depends on the result of installing the new one, so it is too early to know.

Rgds,

Daniel

Re: Emax II RIP?

Got mine today! Very fast shipping from Miami to Sweden I must say,
1 week. =) I will try to install it in my Emax II tonight.
Hope its just to replace the old PSU without modifications
to this "new" unit. My old PSU is actually working fine. Its just that
whining sound that comes when i load from the HD that worries me.
So if anyone wants to buy my old PSU and fix it up or something you can contact me.
