Emax Rack - no sound..or barely any

Emax Rack - no sound..or barely any

2010-02-25 by leavesstillgreen

So I just purchased an Emax SE HD rack.

Problem -
When amplified an enormous amount I can hear what sounds like samples playing and the pitch tracks with the midi notes, but it is barely audible.

The volume slider has no effect on the barely audible noises I'm hearing. (calibrated volume slider with no results)

I've plugged an external synth into the sample input and can also barely hear it when the emax is amplified a lot. Interestingly, I can still hear this even when the emax is not turned on.

So are there any tests I can do to diagnose the exact problem?

When plugging into the sample input, should I be able to hear whatever is being fed into it easily? I'm very unfamiliar with how one should work.

Is it possible one of the foot pedal inputs is affecting the volume at all times even for the sample input? (I had an issue like this with my memorymoog)

These functions seem to be working...
- loads up from floppy disk and loads presets (hard drive doesn't work)
- ran midi diagnostics and it is receiving midi correctly
- all buttons on front panel are working properly

Thanks in advance for any help! I really really appreciate it!

-RJ

it sounds like the voice board is shot needs servicing

this needs to be examined by a repair tech as there are many things that could be wrong and neads extensive testing on conponent level

yikes..exactly what i didn't want to hear :(

How would a synth tech diagnose it? Is it something I could try to do with a voltmeter?

yes and no you need an oscillascope and a logic anyliser to make sure all the logic chips are working properly and the oscilascope for testing waveforms and power functions i can help a bit when things are specific like with the control off the filters recently were i said it was the cv dac that was at fault

but he had full sound just no control with yours it could be various things there a lot of logic chips for the control of the analog voice board but also theres the 12bit dacs that could be at fault i would need to have the machine for testing to

diagnose properly

Ok, thanks. Know of anyone in the Los Angeles area who has done work on these? How much should I expect to pay for repair?

I'm wondering if it would be better to just sell it and let somebody else deal with the problem...

in the usa your looking at $70 per hour for a good reputable synth repair tech

some i can recomend for usa is thesonic he,s my counter part in the usa

you could ask ted or myself who repair ted lives in the usa i live in the uk

or you could sell it as spare parts i buy broken boards and scavenge the parts to repair other emaxes as there are some chips that you just cant buy any more the synth chip is 1 they are rare as are some custom ic,s produced by emu

ill buy if you decide to part it

or if you decide to fix it i can help there to

Hi, I live in Chula Vista Ca. area and I have taken to repair a Roland JD-800 and my ENSONIQ ESQ-1 to a repair shop that some friends recommended me in L.A., I saw there a lot of Vintage keyboards such as Emax's, Akai's, Moog's, Roland's that they were working on them.

My two synthezisers are working good since that, the ENSONIQ just needed a new internal battery and son keys adjustment and the JD-800 was a full recover!!, It works 100% now and looks so great, tey changed all keys, sliders, buttons, display...

By the way, I don't obtain any gain with recommending them.
I hope this will help.

and how many hours would it take to diagnose and likely fix such a problem?

Re: [emax] Re: Emax Rack - no sound..or barely any

2010-02-25 by jammie

dont know depends on how fast you find the problem

the way i do it is first i swap boards out to get the machine running once i
have diagnosed which board is causing the problem then i work on that board
at the componant level

using my digital volt meter then using the oscillascope and logic anilyser i
test the good board first and do all my measurements then i test the bad
board for the same measurements from this i can tell which chips are acting
up

Thanks! I've actually used them before for an RE-201. They are good, though kind of expensive. I'm going to see if I can find a place that's cheaper..especially for the diagnosis. They have a $100 min just to look at it.

This doesn't address the other symptoms you describe, but to clarify:

The sample input does not mirror its input signal to any outputs. If you
want to monitor the sample input, you must monitor it at the source. You can
only hear the sample input after it is sampled and you hit a key to play it
back.

Thanks! I was still wondering about that.

So, then I have no idea why i can kind of hear the sample input coming out of the mono output, granted this is only by amplifying the singal a ton!

Anyone have an explanation for this? or why I can hear sounds that are tracking with the midi input, but only barely hear them?

So sad this doesn't work :/ I was so excited for it! I wish I had room for the keyboard version...those are so plentiful it seems.

It is pretty strange that I can hear the sample input barely when amplifying the sig

So now it works... i got lucky...
I had looked inside before and nothing seemed loose, but I decided to take
off the analog board to look underneath it at the traces and solder points
and when I reconnected the analog board I noticed I could push the connector
farther than it had been on before!

Thanks for the help though guys

I guess the lesson is always check all the connectors thoroughly..disconnect
and reconnect! whoot whoot!

Thanks! I've actually used them before for an RE-201. They are good, though kind of expensive. I'm going to see if I can find a place that's cheaper..especially for the diagnosis. They have a $100 min just to look at it.

EMax I -> No sound, but filter/ADSR and appegiator working! Sampler output makes very quiet blubb blubbs ... :-)

2010-02-26 by Tracer Y / Goetz Kretschmann

Hello to all,

I´m very glad to find such a very nice mailing list here.

I very much hope, you could help me!

A friend of mine makes me a very nice present, an EMax I.

The broken disk drive was fixed, but the sound output is broken.

The sampler is booting from disk at startup,
teh presets are loaded.

Special -> Midianalysis is showing midi activity if I play a midi keyboard
connected to the emax Midi in.

I couldn´t hear the sample playback, but if I raise the gain on the emax
outputs connected to my mixer,
I could hear a blubb on every midi note, seems to be the adsr and or filter
section,
furthermore, if I select a preset using the appegiator and I keep the midi
key pressed, I could hear the appegiator working continously in blubb blub
blub blubb blubbs .. ;-) very nice.

I did a Special -> RAM and ERAM check without problems.

I open the sampler, and lift all socket ICs a bit and repress them into the
socket.

I also did this with the cable connector.

I rechecked the sampler without any success.

I checked a lot of reports in this mailing list back to 2007, but cannot
find a problem similar to mine.

Is there anything I could check for, I own an oscilloscope and some
voltmeters and are being familar to basic servicing.

Any help would be very appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
greetings to you all,
Goetz from Wonderlandstudio

Hi,

did you check the presets from various disks? If it's not happening with
all sounds you loaded, I would guess that the AMP- or Filter-Envelopes are
closing very fast.

Try to load a sound and raise the sustainlevels from the envelopes and
listen for changes.

Just a guess....

Re: [emax] EMax I -> No sound, but filter/ADSR and appegiator working! Sampler output makes very quiet blubb blubbs ... :-)

2010-02-26 by RJ Kaufman

Pretty bizarre that I just had the same problem, though my lack of
sound was just caused by a slightly loose connection. The connector to
the analog board is kind of difficult to attach. I had to hold the
board from underneath and press pretty hard to get it properly
connected and I couldn't tell that it was loose when I first
disconnected the board..
Other than that I don't have any suggestions. Sorry :(
