Need help with Emax 1 keyboard..Please!!!

2002-10-08 by Orlando Concepcion

Hello,
I got an Emax (1 keyboard) last week without the OS or power cord. After
many tries, I (think) I made an OS disk. First of all, I used a standard
computer power cord and it seems to work. When I insert the disk, the
floppy drive tries to read the disk, then makes three clicking noises, and
immediately following that the EMAx lights blink once quickly and it just
keeps repeating this procedure.
Do you think the clicking/blinking is due to a bad floppy drive or disk or
is it the power cord?
I woud really appreciate any help at all with this problem.
Thanks,
Orlando

Hi!

I think you have a problem with your OS disk. Go to
www.emulatorarchive.com and ask Rob to send a OS disk to you, or try to
locate one from a closer source.

Any PC type power cord is fine, heaven knows everytime I move my rig I get confused
on which power cords got to my PC, OB-8, or Emax II. They are all interchanganble
though.

As far as the blinking it's definitely either the floppy drive or it just can't read the disk.
Does it ever report "NOT Emax DISK" or "Can't Read Floppy" errors, if not there is a
good chance the floppy unit is bad.

Unfortunately it doesn't give either of those errors. It says insert disk,
I insert one and the clicking/blinking begins. I had lots of problems
creating the OS disk, since I run Win 98, but I eventually got one to write
through DOS. Could this be the problem? Is it impossible to make an OS
disk w/Windows? IF necessary, which (model)floppy drives are compatible for
replacements?
Thanks for the help!

You can not make an OS disk through even a DOS box on a Windows 9x or newer
machine. It has to be through DOS 6.22 or earlier and then it doesn't always work.

The only reliable place I know for replacement drives is http://www.route66studios.com

I'd try getting a OS disk that is known to work before replacing the drive.

Thanks. I am waiting on a disk from emulator archive. If that doesn't
work, I guess I'll have to replace the floppy drive.

While you are waiting it may be worth it to put a floppy disk cleaner
through your EMAX. I had a time where I thought my EMAXII floppy had
crapped out only to clean it and it worked fine ever since. At least this
way if the disk from emulator archive doesn't work you know you need a new
floppy. I don't think your OS disk made on the PC will work.

You can make Emax boot disks on the PC. If you're using Windows 98, it
helps if you hit F6 to get the boot menu while it's starting up, and
choose "Command Prompt" to get it into DOS mode.

Another handy hint is to make a "Windows Startup Disk" which is a boot
floppy with CD-ROM drivers on it. This will, again, start you up in DOS
mode.

Make sure that all your filenames are in 8.3 format, because EMX won't
work properly with the usual Micros~1.txt stuff that Windows does in DOS
mode. I suspect the EMX format is pretty much just a raw disk image, and
certainly there doesn't appear to be anything peculiar about the Emax disk
format. It would be fairly easy to write a more modern tool to read and
write Emax disks. In fact, I think you'd be OK just using dd on a Unix
machine (Linux, xBSD, possibly OSX) - something like "dd if=/dev/fd0
of=filename bs=512 count=1440" would do it. It breaks down like this - dd
is the command, if is the Input File - in this case, a device (the first
floppy), of is the Output File, bs is the block size (512 bytes) and count
is - guess what? - the number of blocks to move (512 bytes * 80 tracks * 9
sectors * 2 sides = 720k). Of course, this would just be a raw disk
image, not an EMX file.

Hope this helps,
  Gordon

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
