Hard Drive in EMAX? Emax Upgrades?

Hard Drive in EMAX? Emax Upgrades?

2002-10-09 by jg

Hi,
more silly newbie Emax questions here...
I just aquired my original Emax (model 1020) last weekend...

I heard you can put a SCSI hard drive in the Emax, but does that
apply to my model (original model Emax)?

Are there any upgrades available for the original Emax?

What is the latest OS/Software version?
Apparently mine has: "Software Rev 3.0"

Are there any PC software apps that can edit/transfer Emax samples?

honestly I dont know for sure that you can put an internal drive in a emax,
Im pretty sure you can.

You could tell pretty quick by taking the cover off and seeing if there is a
power supply
and a 50 pin scci cable connector located near the internal floppy drive.

On the emax II the power suppy and connector were right there, all I had to
do was
un -band the power supply so I would reach the drive I put in. Incidently,
radio shack sells
a pc board type holder that is copper colored and a little wider than I cd
Jewel box.
This would act as a good HD holder to mount the drive to, youd have to drill
4 holes in
the plate to hold it inside the EMAX.

it sells for around $5 and again it is copper colored.
I did infact use a cd jewel box with drilled holes, but I bought the radio
shack contraption
intending to one day switch it out.

Matt

More than likely you will not be able to put a SCSI HD in to your model 1020 unless it
clearly is labelled HD as part of the Emax logo. The Emax did not come SCSI ready like
the Emax II did and actually requires a different controller card and I believe some a
new motherboard. The only upgrade you might be able to run is the SE OS which adds
additive synthesis and transform multiplication functions. Not really worth the effort
though, the Emax's processor is deadly slow when performing those functions. Please
read my FAQ on the Emax to learn more.

Oh yeah, forgot to answer this part too. The Emax does do MIDI sample transfers (aka
SDS) which can be used with sample editors like Sound Forge, Awave, and
Samplevision to transfer and edit the samples themselves on a PC. There is no software
that can be used to edit Preset parameters.

I don't see where (in manual or on the unit) the Emax
can do SDS transfers.

Can you do standard SDS transfers or is it a special
application & protocol?

Again, this is an original Emax Rack Sampler.

(not an SE or HD).
