New Emax owner

New Emax owner

2012-09-27 by darkbill_uk

Hi,

I've just purchased an Emax. I'm not sure which model I've got though. I was told it was a Series 1. There is a floppy drive but no HD that I can see, and it doesn't say SE anywhere.

It came with two discs with the operating system on - Emax HD OS 1.1 - but when I put them in the drive doesn't recognise them. It starts spinning and then says "Disk Not Formatted".

Having read some of the group posts I'm guessing I'm using the wrong operating system.

I opened the Emax up and got the following off the board - EMAX CPU (1986). PC327. Version 2 REV C.

Does anyone have any idea which operating system I should be using?

Cheers,

Bill

you need pre se os or upgrade it to se os

the upgrade se image is in the files section

if you decide todo the scsi upgrade you will need to upgrade the os to se first

you revision board can be made into scsi version

HD OS 1.1 expects you have SCSI.
Usually if you have a wrong OS you will get "Wrong Software Rev" or similar.

If you have SCSI you could use HD OS 1.1 or PLUS OS 1.0 (which supports
external SCSI devices as well as an internal).

Check if you have it by reading here:

Many thanks, I'm going to try the pre SE OS system first. Is there a version I should use in the files section?

Your help is much appreciated.

Hi Ted,

Thanks for the info. I opened up the unit and it doesn't have any of the SCSI options.

1) Eprom is IP349
2) TIM Pal IC's do not support SCSI
3) No 5380 Controller at IC6

Looks like I need an earlier version of the Operating Software. Any suggestions how to create a start up suitable disc using EXMP. I've got an old XP PC that can run EXMP so could I create an Operating Disc from this?

Cheers,

Bill

Do I need to format the disk in my Emax? At the moment if I install a blank disc I'm just getting a 'Not Formatted' message, but it won't actually let me format it. Kind of chicken and egg problem I guess.

It looks like I need the OS working before I can format a disk in the Emax?

I haven't had this situation as I have factory floppies.
I haven't used EMXP for this either.

In this situation-
You can try EMXP.
_OR_
use EMAXUTIL to format it in DOS (not a window- booted from MSDOS 6.22).
Then write the OS image to the disk.

Just a thought.

Re: New Emax owner - boot disk

2012-09-29 by dawtechie

There is a free download at the Chicken Systems website that will make a Windows 98 (DOS) boot disk with several disk writers for E-MU, Roland etc. Just put a blank floppy in the drive and run the program and then boot from that floppy and in the case of the Emax run the EMX app. Here is the link:
http://chickensys.com/downloads/other.php

Thanks! Jeff

Re: [emax] New Emax owner

2012-10-07 by William Bruce

Hi

Quick update. I've installed Omniflop successfully and have formatted a DD disk. However, I'm struggling to load the right operating system onto it.

I've downloaded the emax-os folder, but I'm not sure how to get the emaxos.emax system onto a formatted disk.

If anyone can help it would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bill

Do I need to format the disk in my Emax? At the moment if I install a blank disc I'm just getting a 'Not Formatted' message, but it won't actually let me format it. Kind of chicken and egg problem I guess.

It looks like I need the OS working before I can format a disk in the Emax?

Cheers,

Bill

Ok, really please pardon my ignorance on this one. I've got the emax-os folder on my desktop. Is the image file in the EXMP folder? And do I just drag and drop it into the OS folder?

Re: [emax] New Emax owner

2012-10-07 by William Bruce

Thanks, that was really helpful. I've got Software Rev 3.2 written to disc now, and verified.

But when I put it into the Emax I just get a TimeOut Error. I've already used a Disc Cleaner on the drive so:

 - Do I need an earlier version of the OS? If so can you suggest which version on in the Files section.
 - Do you think the drive might need replacing (this has been hard to tell until I had the right OS)

Your help is much appreciated.

Do I need to format the disk in my Emax? At the moment if I install a blank disc I'm just getting a 'Not Formatted' message, but it won't actually let me format it. Kind of chicken and egg problem I guess.

It looks like I need the OS working before I can format a disk in the Emax?

Cheers,

Bill

HD OS 1.1 expects you have SCSI.
Usually if you have a wrong OS you will get "Wrong Software Rev" or similar.

If you have SCSI you could use HD OS 1.1 or PLUS OS 1.0 (which supports
external SCSI devices as well as an internal).

Check if you have it by reading here:

time out error is bad floppy disk or miss aligned heads

on the emax compared to the floppy in the pc are you using ddsd disk or hd as hd disks can fail very quickly or not write properly due to the dsdd magnetic pulse signal being to weak to write to the metal film of an hd disk

Re: [emax] New Emax owner

I'm using dsdd, but I guess I'll have to try a few as I know it can take a few attempts to find one that works properly.

Thanks, I assume I'm using the right OS version then I just need to get a dsdd that works.

I might hold of some new dsdd discs just to to be on the safe side. I'll update with how I get on.

Re: New Emax owner

After you have downloaded and have run EMXP for the first time, EMXP will have created some (empty) folders in the folder where you have initially saved EMXPN.EXE.
One of these folders is called \Os.
You have to copy your emaxos.emx file into that \Os folder.
Once you have done that, EMXP will "see" the emaxos.emx file if you choose "Manage EMAX OS Images" in the "Manage Emu Emax/Emax-II Images and Disks". You will able to copy it to the DSDD floppy disk now.

BTW One of the next versions of EMXP will not require this "fixed" folder usage anymore; and maybe - who knows - once in the future EMXP will even have a normal graphical user interface :-)

Ok, I should have read the other messages and should have seen you already solved this with help of jammie ;)
So ignore this message...

Re: [emax] New Emax owner

2012-10-08 by William Bruce

Hi,

Quick update. Fine using EXMP and not getting Disk Not Formatted messages now, but still Timeout Errors.

But red light on drive is staying on and it's making a rather unpleasant grinding sound. I've cleaned it but I'm guessing it might be kaput.

Tried using a few DD floppies so I'm not convinced it's still a disk problem. And the PC has no problem reading or writing them.

I may pass it on for sale and repair and look at at possibly rack version of an Emax 1 or II.

Thanks to everyone for all their help. I couldn't have got so far without the help of the group!

And I've still got an Emulator II that works great (touch wood!) so I can't get too upset. :-)

Cheers,

Bill

Thanks, that was really helpful. I've got Software Rev 3.2 written to disc now, and verified.

But when I put it into the Emax I just get a TimeOut Error. I've already used a Disc Cleaner on the drive so:

 - Do I need an earlier version of the OS? If so can you suggest which version on in the Files section.
 - Do you think the drive might need replacing (this has been hard to tell until I had the right OS)

Your help is much appreciated.

you need to put the image file into the os folder in the emxp folder all os go into this folder

all other images sound disks and sf2 need to go into images folder

if you dont put images in these folders emxp can see them as it looks in these folder locations

the akai folder is for akai format files

Ok, really please pardon my ignorance on this one. I've got the emax-os folder on my desktop. Is the image file in the EXMP folder? And do I just drag and drop it into the OS folder?

Cheers,

Bill

HD OS 1.1 expects you have SCSI.
Usually if you have a wrong OS you will get "Wrong Software Rev" or similar.

If you have SCSI you could use HD OS 1.1 or PLUS OS 1.0 (which supports
external SCSI devices as well as an internal).

Check if you have it by reading here:

Ted
