thank you! look forward to it!

now i just need to get a mac that works with it. suppose any mac that runs os7 or 8? read it is a picky software.

OS 7.6.1 is probably the most desired OS version.
Look at lowendmac.com for models that are better.
I got a 7300 (7600 and 7500 are same mobo).
These can run clear up to OS 9, but also run 7.5 / 7.6 - have PCI bus also.

having a PCI bus / slot is "requirement" for SDEMAX?

how about the mother board?

may i ask why OS7.6 the most desirable os?

i was thinking of getting a powerbook, maybe a powerbook 180 or earlier ones, as someone pointed out on this group form.

for following reasons.

1. it is relatively quite (unlike later G3 or G4)

2. do believe it is fully compatible (came out about the time of Mac SE). - it has that serial port which a special RS422 cable could be plugged in (i think it has to be built in serial interface, that is set for printer or modem. maybe there could be a possible compatibility issue. sound designer universal running on a G4 won't even recognize my usb interface though it should be able to send samples through MIDI)

3. quiet compare to desktop Macs

4. somewhat take less space

5. consumes less electricity

6. less cables

but, i do realize that getting a faster ones won't hurt. even possible to process some sample with plugins (basic eq or compressor) if any exist in OS7 or OS8...

so, if 7300 or 7600 works, maybe possible to go with later ones as G3s? they can run OS8 and has a serial port built-in. any idea on that? heard anyone using a G3 machine?

getting an Emax to full capacity is not easy!!! so ancient instrument! yet sounds damn sweet...

thanks!

no- not required for SD for Emax.

But having a PCI bus slot allows you some add on card / upgrade options for
video, etc.
Radeon 7000 card for better video (for example).
Add in Audiomedia 3 card, if you want to run ProTools, etc.
Faster SCSI adapter, etc.

7.6.1 is the last OS that is officially supported with Alchemy 3.0 which is
also a really good sound editor as well as the Sound Designer.
It has bank transfer via RS422 / midi to Emax also.

Also- I know SD2 for Emax works on 7.6.1.

OS 8 and later can result in odd occurrence / errors.
My Beige G3 which I had back in the day came with OS 8.
The G3 cannot run earlier than OS 8.

max is 7.6.1

any machine before g3 will work

but if using audiomedia3 card it does not talk to sd2

only cards that talk to sd2 is audiomedia2 and soundtools1 and
soundexcellerator2

but these only work in nubus macs

i have a macIIsi

which works perfect 128mb ram and scsi as standard and floppy disk

g3 no floppy support

so have older programs problem loading

Re: sdemax, sound designer for emax?

2012-12-14 by being2080

sorry for my slow response...

so... to run sound designer reliably or alchemy you need a pre-g3 mac to run system 7.6. ok i got that.

but now, it is pci or nubus?

i rather have a mac with pci bus, i think there are more and better options.

audiomedia3 card does not talk to sd2. but does it talk to sound designer for emax? i am trying to get that specific sound designer version built for emax working, because it is possible to edit and setup programs (presets in emu sampling terminology) as well as editing samples and other very convenient functions, if i recall reading it somewhere right. maybe sound designer for emax is more or less like the graphical editor for akai s5000 / s6000?

is there any reason to have a sound card in those pre-g3 macs? i found that there is a sound output port on 8600, 9600, or any other macs produced around that time, including Power Book 3400c (the last laptop mac that can run 7.5 or 7.6). isn't that good enough for monitoring when editing samples? audio quality from such output can't be great but just trimming or setting loop points of samples, it may not be necessary.

but if it is possible to process samples with effects inside of those macs, it will be nice to have decent quality audio put...

is there ways to process samples with effects in a mac running system 7.6? plugins, sample editor with effects? the era feels pretty far away...

Re: sdemax, sound designer for emax?

2012-12-15 by being2080

definitely apple stuffs do cost more...

jammie, if you uploaded the sound designer for emax again, can you provide a link to it? tried the old one in the files section of this group, but does not work.

really appreciate!!!

just found out that, an audiomedia card is required to run sound designer 2.5. won't launch at all. damn, another dongle... anyway it was tested in a mac classic emulator running os9 with files from this forum. (thanks to all the nice contributors!)

so, there goes the idea of using a laptop mac or desktop macs with pci bus with sound designer 2.5.

but, maybe sound designer for emax won't require an audiomedia card, a-dongle? like sound designer universal?

by the way, anyone know the difference between sound designer 2 and sound designer for emax? can't find much details on them...

thanks as always.

it does not need a dongle the dongle license is on the zipdrive image so you will need an scsi zipdrive to run it as a cd wont work

No click of death on my hard drives yet ;-)
I have temporarily uploaded the SDEmax.zip file to filefactory.
http://www.filefactory.com/file/7i5wk6kt0bj9/n/SDEmax_zip
(to do a free download, use the "slow download" option at the bottom of the webpage, it's still fast enough...)

Jammie, perhaps you can copy it to a file server/dropbox account which has a more permanent nature ? (just like you did before)

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
