Re: [EXS] exs to replace emu e4xt ultra?

2003-11-12 by James Ryan

E4 samples sound fine in the EXS..... however, I use the Kirk Hunter string library which is pretty big and my theory is why bog down the computer with a ton of EXS instances and drive it quickly to overload if I don't need to. I don't like my E4XT's interface even a tiny little bit compared to the EXS, but in the instances where I don't have to change anything and just have to load up a bank, it seems ill advised to throw it away. It sounds amaizing and takes some of the load off the computer. Sooooo.... use both!

If you decide to dump EMU, you will hit the processing wall earlier in an 800mhz machine than a dual 1.25. I know nothing about the audiphile card and its latency. I use a Motu PCI-424 which seems to work fine. I've had up to 25 instances of audio instruments going without any annoying latency or gags on a dual boot, dual 1.25 with on gig of memory.

Subject: [EXS] exs to replace emu e4xt ultra?

I'm sure that this has been covered 100fold by now, but unfortunately I have missed
  it.

Can anyone direct me to threads or help me answer the question of should I replace
my Emu E4xtUltra with the EXS?

  My needs are:
Good warm sounding rich strings, drums, ambience, piano, bass, synths for my home
  studio.

Extremely low latency and warmth/quality of sounds along with convenience is more
important to me than quantity of sounds available.

I'm happy with the way the evp88 and evb3 sound with my audiophile 24/96 card, so
I guess that the EXS would sound fairly good as well.

Also, would an 800mhz G4 with 1 gig ram and multiple 7200 drives be enough to run
an instance of evp88, evb3, clav, and 5-10 esx tracks? or should i purchase a dual 1
gig G4? Do I need to upgrade my soundcard to get lower latency to run this many
  soft synths?

Any thoughts, suggesions, or links would be greatly appreciated.

  Thanks,

  Will
