I have a question about how to create an 'alias' in the sampler folder I tried to get that happenning without much success. Do I move my files 'ie' onto another hardrive - then create shortcuts (in the new drive position) and then cut(drag) those shortcuts into the sampler folder within logic ??

The Sampler Instruments folder itself can be an alias, or any file or folder therein can be an alias. So you could have a folder "Sampler Instruments" on some other hard disk, and put an alias to that in the Logic application folder (instead of a real "Sampler Instruments" folder). Or you could have folders like "EXS factory", "Xtreme Analog", etc, on some other hard disk, all containing EXS instruments, and you can then put aliasses to these folders in the Sampler Instruments Folder which is in the Logic application folder. To quickly create an alias: in the Finder press Command-Option, and then drag the file or folder to the new destination: instead of moving the file, you'll create an alias. I don't see why you would want to use aliasses though. EXS-instrument files are relatively small, so you might as well simply put them in the Sampler Instruments folder directly. The samples themselves can go anywhere, like on a fast & big dedicated audio-drive. -- Hendrik Jan Veenstra h @ k n o w a r e . n l Omega Art: http://www.omega-art.com/

I use aliases with the Vienna Symphonic Library for the convenience of having the entire library on one drive, programs and all. Not a rational thing, but it just seems easier having everything in one place. >To quickly create an alias: in the Finder press Command-Option, and >then drag the file or folder to the new destination: instead of >moving the file, you'll create an alias. Hey, you learn something new every day! I've always used command/M to make the alias; this saves the step of deleting the first alias if the destination folder is on a different drive. -- Nick Batzdorf 818/905-9101, cell 590-9101, fax 905-5434

And if you make the alias in a different place than the destination (which you usually do :), the cmd-opt-drag doesn't add "alias" to the name and thus saves you from having to delete that on each and every alias. -- Hendrik Jan Veenstra h @ k n o w a r e . n l Omega Art: http://www.omega-art.com/

From: Cyril Blanc <blanc.cyril@...> >Have you move to a G5 ? Have I moved to a G5. No. There's no point before Panther is released to access all that memory, and even then I'm not in a rush. It's much cheaper to keep adding Windows machines at 1/3 the price if they're just going to sit there and play samples. My strategy is to use the Mac for loading extra stuff that individual projects require (and for sequencing and everything else, of course), and to keep the Windows machines loaded and ready to go. Right now I only have one Giga machine, but I plan to add a second one in the near future. That's how I feel today, anyway. Maybe I'll change my mind tomorrow! >How do VSL behaves ? How does VSL behave. (My French is laughable - I'm not trying to insult you be correcting your English!) VSL behaves very well on a dual gig G4. I can load the same amount of 24-bit VSL into its 1.5 GB of RAM as I could load 16-bit VSL into my Giga machine when it had 1.5GB (now I have 2 GB, so it loads more). But you can run far more voices in EXS than in the present version of Giga. I get 180 stereo voices on the G4 off a single Firewire drive, vs. Giga's max 160 mono voices. On the other hand, VSL isn't particularly polyphony-intensive. -- Nick Batzdorf 818/905-9101, cell 590-9101, fax 905-5434

From: Cyril Blanc <blanc.cyril@...> >This is very interesting ! >How can you have a 24bit version ? ;o))) Correction: the EXS version is 16 bits as well. I just looked at a file in SpectraFoo's bit scope. My apologies. But between you and me and four walls, I really couldn't care less. Being able to load more of it into each computer is much more valuable to me than a microscopic difference in audio quality. -- Nick Batzdorf 818/905-9101, cell 590-9101, fax 905-5434

What PC do you use for Giga ? If you have a diagram of your installation, I would love it, because I cannot yet figure out how is your setup. How reliable is Giga on PC ? How many crashes a day or a week ? Thanks in advance. Best regards Cyril Blanc France If you want to be sure I read your answer leave my name in it ! Spam mails are directly going to trash

From: Cyril Blanc <blanc.cyril@...> >What PC do you use for Giga ? As mainstream a machine as possible: P4 2.4 GHz, 2GB RAM, Windows XP, motherboard with Intel chipset. I bought it only for this purpose - my first Windows machine - and I plan on adding another one in the near future, depending on how things shake out with the G5s (which can access 8GB of memory, making the prospect of having it all on a single machine theoretically possible). I'd be happy to give you more details off the list if you're really serious about taking the leap of faith. > If you have a diagram of your installation, I >would love it, because I cannot yet figure out how is your setup. I have a somewhat roundabout system, but this part of it is very simple. The Giga machine is simply an external sound module, with the eight TDIFs on its soundcard (a Tascam-branded PCI-822) going into the same digital mixer my Pro Tools audio interface is in. So I monitor the Giga outputs through the mixer, and then bus them into Pro Tools when I'm ready to mix. I also have the VSL Orchestral Cube in EXS format (on my main Mac), so the library is running on both machines. Oh, and for clocking, I have a MOTU Digital Timepiece feeding word clock to the mixer, Superclock to the Pro Tools system, S/PDIF to the Tascam PCI-822...and also ADAT sync to my mobile PowerBook rig, which is a MOTU 828 Firewire interface. >How reliable is Giga on PC ? How many crashes a day or a week ? >Thanks in advance. It's 100% reliable. I leave the computer on and loaded, and it never crashes. But you have to get the right hardware, or this won't be your experience. -- Nick Batzdorf 818/905-9101, cell 590-9101, fax 905-5434
