Enigma, Delerium, percussion samples.

Does anyone know what type of sample CDs are used by artists like
Michael Cretu, Rhys Fulber, or artists writing ambient/new age dub
style music?

All the interviews I read talk about how these guys use Logic and how
they "...love the built in samplers and synths because it was such a
pain 10 years ago" so I figure they must have purchased some drum CDs
that we can have access to as well!

Sometimes their kits sound accoustic, just processed, so that's not
too hard to get a hold of. The electronic kits these guys use seem a
bit softer and aren't the typical Roland TR-808 or TR-909 drum
machines used for House/Trance music, although I could be wrong,
maybe just not as compressed? Even so I doubt they are using legacy
drum machines and probably using Sample CDs from various libraries.
I just want to know which ones so I can have a listen too! :) I
have a couple drum CDs and the only one that's close is the Wizoo
Platinum24 Electronic 808/909 CD.

Remember the early Enigma stuff? It had that "Soul II Soul" style
drum sound. lol.. Really though, I appreciate any feedback ya guys
have!

:)

I am not familiar with Michael Cretu but Rhys actually
samples everyone else. If you listen to Future Sound
Of London - "Paupa New Guinea", Enigma - "Sadeness",
Deep Forest - "Savanah Dance", Dead Can Dance -
"Persian Love Song", Tori Amos - " Caught A Lite
Sneeze " and Several Songs from Massive Attack you
will hear a good portion of the samples from the
Symantic Spaces and Karma. They do use alot of
organic kits both played by a drummer and sampled.
Then you will just have to experiment with the FX till
it sounds similar. I have tried the same approach to
get something that sounds similar to their drums but
so far have been unsucessfull.

Since most of their sampled drums are copywritten I
don't think it will be very likly for them to put out
a sample CD. You can go to the conjure one website
and ask Rhys if he would do something like that. He
reads the posts quite often.

I remember hearing some of that stuff on Einstein CD from (AFAIR)
BestService. Also most of them seem to use Eric Persing's Distorted
Reality (mostly volume 1) quite extensively, but those are mainly
loops, not kits. In general, I think if you're really serious about
processing some plain samples with unconventional means (distortion,
ring mod, etc.) and not too lazy to experiment you're gonna come up
with some unique ideas everyone would be curious to know, cause after
all that's how these guys got their specific sound IMMHO. Just my
$0.02.

Best,

Andy

I picked up drum CD for EXS24 that's pretty good. It has all those
drum machines that were used to create the loops by Dead Can Dance,
FSOL, Massive Attack, and so on. It's got the old Roland, Linn,
Akai, Oberheim, and Korg drum kits (and more) in native EXS24 and the
CD was only $25.

Here are a few questions I'm curious about (forgive my amateur status)

1) When a drum loop is sampled, how do they stretch it to be the
tempo THEY want for their song as opposed to being forced to use the
tempo it was originally sampled at?

2) Even if they sample a main beat, what about drum fills or drum
part solos (such as a breakdown that eliminates hi-hats, or is just
a bass drum with no snare but still has hi-hats, etc).

3) For more recent CDs like Conjure One, do you think other parts are
sampled (ripped) like the accoustic guitars or little melodies and
riffs here and there? Or do you think it's 50/50 ripped and
original? I did read an interview where Fulber said the Conjure One
album sat on the shelf for one year because sample clearence took so
long.

Thanks,
Mark

I wanted to add that as for creating original drum loops for the
Ambient/Dub/New Age style of music I found the kits from Eric
Persing's Stylus software instrument (Spectrasonics) to fit the bill
perfectly based on the demos I heard and seeing the demonstration
video.

For creating "ethnic" sounds or using world instruments, I also found
a number of sample CDs (Ethno World, Ethno World 2, Quantum Leap Rare
Instruments) to sound excellent but just those three CDs alone add up
to $1,000 which for some people is a lot to just pull out of your
pocket. The Virtual Instrument called Culture from Yellow Tools
offers a lot and because it's 100% instruments as opposed to some
intrsument, some loops, you probably get more value for your money.

This is what I've discovered upon my research so I thought I'd share
it with everyone. I think now is nice time to write music that
places itself in the New Age/Ethno/Ambient/Dub/Insert Name Here style
of music because the availbility of the instruments to the single
musicians is 100x what it was 10 years ago. More sample CDs are now
available offering these sounds, software samplers have increased
productivity and usability for these sounds, and instruments like
Culture, Stylus, and Atmosphere really help open things up. Of
course all of this is true for any genre, but I think this particular
genre has leaned more on sampling copywritten material more than any
other genre, so that's why I feel it's worth pointing all of this
out. :)
