Reading Giga files with EXS mkII

Reading Giga files with EXS mkII

2004-02-10 by kevin_ejazz

Hello,

I just joined this list. I'm excited to learn more about the EXS mkII. Currently, I'm in
demo mode. I'm deciding on whether to upgrade form Logic Platinum to Logic Pro.

I used to own Gigastudio (before I switched to Mac) and am trying to convert some of
those old files to EXS format. I've successfully converted the Giga Piano (are the
additional optimizations to be performed?). However, there some .gig files that I have
in the Sampler Instruments that the EXS doesn't recognize.

Does anyone understand behaviour? Is there some header information that the EXS
looks for?

Thanks!

Kevin

Yes, stupid thing: EXS does not accept filenames that are longer than
(put the number here, I didn't want to figure out what it was
exactly).

So just make a note of the name, rename it to a shorter one, convert
it and then use a name that makes sense to you, that the EXS will
still see.

Also, make sure you always have the .gig extension.

Cheers and good luck
Hans

Not too tough a decision, is it? :) They've set it up so you'd be
silly not to bite.

Do it.

Every .gig file I've ever tried did convert, but more complex programs that
include release triggers or modwheel crossfading often don't convert
properly. Some can be converted better with CDXtract or Translator, but
some will still require manual tweaking.

In light of that, I propose we set up some sort of bulletin board system,
possibly through Yahoo or a members' FTP, where we can post successfully
tweaked converted Giga files. As I've found that Giga conversions through
the above mentioned programs often create a different set of files than
that of the EXS conversions, I'd suggest they all start from the EXS's
internal converter to ensure that all the file names are the same. We could
also include .txt files with any file re-naming or other specific
instructions. regarding "how we did it." There's a huge and ever growing
world of great Gigasampler libraries out there, and not every sample
developer is jumping on the EXS bandwagon.

Who's game?

Brilliant,

We could create/call a new group GIGA2EXS users
I am having myself some translation problems with XSamples, Quantum leap
brass,
Ultimate Strings... It si true what you said, you do loose some of the
original tweaking (articulations/Keytrig/Release...)

[EXS] Giga to EXS file exchange--LOP

2004-02-19 by Sean McCoy

OK, I'll start. I've gone through all the converted patches in the London
Orchestral Percussion library and made mostly minor adjustments in volume,
voice allotment, release times and names to make them all recognizable and
workable in EXS24. I turned on one-shot mode for several of the snare
samples as well. If anybody has this library and is interested in the
files, they can be downloaded from:

http://www.oregonsound.com/downloads/LOP%20EXS%20Files/

The initial conversions were done using EXS24's internal converter, and of
course the .wav files can be placed anywhere. The modwheel release or
crossfade features mentioned in the sketchy manual for the suspended
cymbal, crash cymbal, chimes and snare patches weren't there or didn't work
properly, even when I tried CDXtract and Translator conversions. Several
instruments are crying out for merged versions, which I'll post when (or
if) I get to them.

Feel free to contact me on or off list with any questions or comments.

Now I need to tackle Garritan Orchestral Strings, and am hoping someone has
already perfected that behemoth for EXS! (and is willing to share some files)

Sorry, Hendrikus, I should have better explained the directory structure.
The files are in individual subdirectories, and if you're downloading using
a browser you'll have to enter the subdirectories and download the exs
files one by one. Small files, but a pain nevertheless. I'm no website
expert, but if someone can tell me how to make this simpler for browser
users I'm open to suggestion.

If you happen to have an FTP program, you can go to the site and drag the
LOP EXS Files folder over in one quick shot. Here are the parameters:

oregonsound.com
user id is guest
password is osr1234

Sorry Sean

I 've tried again http://www.oregonsound.com/downloads/LOP%20EXS%20Files/ and indeed the files are in individual subdirectories, but - I don't gett the wave file.
Or do I misunderstood that there are only exs files and no wave files ????
  Great Hendrikus

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
