EXS Multi Channel Mode Question - Routing

EXS Multi Channel Mode Question - Routing

2004-12-20 by Pete Baldwin

Hi I'm trying to simultaneously use hyper edit window with a multichannel
version of EXS24 powering a drum kit. My hope is to put seperate effects on
the different drum sounds used in this one instance of the EXS24. I'm told
the way to do this is to set up some AUX objects in the environment assign
the source exs to each of them. My question is this - suppose I design a
drum track using hypereditor, how do i designate each drum sound to be
routed to a different aux object?I've set up 6 aux objects i just don't know
how to route the sounds to 'em. Is there a simple answer here? TIA,

Pete

I have been doing this by using busses.
I have sent each dry instrument output from the EXS to a different bus,
which contains the appropriate effects etc.

Not sure how to do this with bussess, I normally load an EXS
multichannel instrument, then assign outputs on the groups as
required, (Main 1-2, 3-4 etc). These outputs are then available is
inputs to aux objects.

This has worked for me but I've heard of people having problems.

An alternative would be to use a standard MIDI instrument ands cable
it via a channel splitter or transformers to several EXS channels.

Thanks Charles, my question would be how do i set this up inthe arrange
window? is there just one instance of the EXS24 as an audio instrument? If
so, how would i designate different notes within the matrix window (or
hyperedit) to go to different outputs?

Many Thanks,

Pete

Hi Pete,

You don't designate it from the hyper edit, arrange, or matrix window.
You need to set the outputs from within the EXS 24 edit window itself.
There, you can choose which zones/groups get assigned to which outputs.

One thing to be careful of though: if you have a multi out EXS drum
kit spread over several aux objects, remember that delay compensation
doesn't work on aux's. So if you put some latency inducing plugins on
some of the aux's; it will throw things out of sync. Maybe very subtly,
maybe a lot, or maybe not at all; depending which plugins you use.

I have made a separate track for each midi note.
i.e. one instrument per track
(Easy in the event editor - select similar - copy and paste into new
sequence)

and then routed each track to its own bus.

You can then add effects or bounce each of the instruments, and/or mix
them as audio files if you wish.

This may seem like a long roundabout procedure yet it does actually
work;-)
