Recommendations for Big band Brass

Recommendations for Big band Brass

2005-06-07 by rschweng2000

Hello all

I'm looking for a great sounding sample library for big band
production demos...mainly saxes, trombones and trumpet sections.
Preferably in EXS24 format - and real playable patches...not prefab
loops

Any recommendations much appreciated

Thanks

Rasmus Schwenger

There is no definitive collection of section horns as of yet. Quantum Leap
Brass is widely used, but I've found it to be marginal and have had to get
by combining that with a rag-tag collection of older brass libraries from
Roland, EMU and Northstar. Kick Ass Brass seems to be good at small
ensemble stuff, but is pricey for its scope. I'm sure others will chime in
here about the Vienna and John Rekevic dedicated sax libraries, neither of
which I've yet heard.

Many of us have been anxiously awaiting the release of Gary Garritan's Jazz
& Big Band collection, due out any time. If it's anything like his previous
libraries, it may become the defacto library for this style. Info here:

Hello Sean and Rasmus,
I've just seen your post and would like to inform you about a more
satisfying solution for your needs: it's called the BROADWAY BIG
BAND and it is developed by a new company called FABLE SOUNDS.

The BROADWAY BIG BAND is a series of multi-sample based virtual
instruments (no sampler is needed) with a powerful performance tool
which enables real note-transitions (legatos) and advanced key-
switching features. Also recorded with 4 mic setups or more
(sometimes 5 or 6 mic positions).

Compared to the Garritan Jazz & Big Band (Approximately 2 GB of
content) the Broadway Big Band will have approximately 70 GB or more
(the exact size hasn't been announced yet), which means it is not
really comparable.
If you are a serious professional user, your only choice in the near
future will be the BROADWAY BIG BAND.

Because of the "Broadway Performer" midi processing tool and
the way
the library was recorded, it will change your workflow (for the
better) and will totally change what you could expect to be able to
do using samplers. For non-orchestral wind instruments real pre-
recorded note transitions (legato intervals) can make a HUGE
difference in flexibility and overall realism.
The BROADWAY BIG BAND offers that and much moreĀ…

Another thing to keep in mind is that the Broadway big Band is fully
upgradeable to its future editions.

The audio engine is HALion powered and the performance tool
("Broadway Performer") will be available both as a MIDI Plug-In and
in standalone versions. Compatible for all systems both PC & MAC.

The BROADWAY BIG BAND is in final stages of development and is
expected to hit the market later this summer.
A more specific release date will be announced soon.

The BROADWAY BIG BAND will be released as a series of virtual
instruments:

BROADWAY TRUMPETS
BROADWAY TROMBONES
BROADWAY SAXOPHONES & WOODWINDS
BROADWAY RHYTHM SECTION

And a combo version titled "BROADWAY BIG BAND" which will include
all of the above for a reduced price.

The BROADWAY PERFORMER - The powerful MIDI processing software
developed by FABLE SOUNDS is included with each and every one of the
BROADWAY BIG BAND products.

As the BROADWAY BIG BAND products are so significantly different
from anything ells done with these instruments in this genre, it may
not be the cheapest choice on the market, but will surly be the
highest-end product line covering these instruments in a non-
orchestral manner, and will surely remain very affordable compared
to what it has to offer.

The official price of the BROADWAY BIG BAND products has not been
announced as of yet.

You can check back on the website:

http://www.fablesounds.com

where you can also find out a lot more about the project,
and/or you can join the FABLE SOUNDS mailing list to be updated as
soon as this new information is released. All you need to do is to
send an empty e-mail message to:

updateme@...

I hope this helps...
Yuval.

Yuval, am I right that you were showing this at the Sonic Implants
booth at NAMM? Or is that a different lib?

Yes. The BROADWAY BIG BAND brass includes all mutes (Harmon, Cup,
Bucket, Straight, and Plunger) as well as Flutter-Tonguing/Growl.

A variety of about 5 different Wah-Wah (Plunger) patterns has been
recorded, including one combining Plunger with flutter-tonguing.
Flutter-tonguing samples are available for both the muted and the un-
muted instruments.

The wha-wah patterns are:

1) Fast opening with progressive vibrato and a slight closing in the
end of the sustained note (Waaaaaaaaahw)
2) Fast closing with a slow opening afterwards (Awwwwwwwah)
3) Slow opening with progressive vibrao (wwwwwwoaaah)
4) Short note with opening (Wah)
5) Short note with flutter-tounging and opening (Wrrrrah)
6) The trombone also has a Plunger vibrato (Wahwawawawah)
7) More... (various combinations and effects)

You can see a detailed instruments & articulations list on the Fable
Sounds website...

we just released the horn arrangements of Greg Adams (from "tower of power") through Big Fish audio. both in acid and apple format http://www.bigfishaudio.com/4DCGI/detail.html?721 I suppose they could technically be used in the EXS. there are a ton of one shots that would work great in the EXS

Fun, fun, stuff and they sound awesome

I'll send u links to some demo material that i wrote when i get home tonight.

Interesting!
Now how about tweaking the tuning and rebouncing it.
Just change the tuning in the song settings, and rebounce the mix.
It'll bring the whole piece to life;-)

This page tells you how to do it:
