sample files folders location

sample files folders location

2005-11-10 by The Flying Snowman

Hi,

I have a question regarding EXS24's file structure organisation. I
don't like the way the files are organised (.exs files in the
Sampler Instruments folder, and audio files in the EXSamples
folder). What I would rather do, is keeping all of the audio files
within the specific Sampler Instruments subfolder, i.e. ...\Sampler
Instruments\Bass\<.exs and . wav files>

For the moment, EXS24 most of the time finds more than one location
of a sample, because most of them I imported them from my old Akai
S2000, where you were forced to keep all your instruments and
samples within the same volume. Then EXS24 asks me which sample I
want to use, and offers me a choice of 2 to 5 locations. It's very
annoying.

Can I simply not tell EXS24 to just look in the "current folder",
meaning the folder where he found the .exs file?

Thanks,

E-Rick

No, Emagic chose to make the EXS sample-finding scheme extremely annoyingly
simple. Actually, it sort of forces you to be disciplined, since having
multiple copies of the same sound isn't that good.

You could use the Project Manager (free) to bail you out here, but it's
slow and may not enable you to do the things you want. You'd probably find
Redmatica's EXS Manager helpful www.redmatica.com

That's got to be the understatement of the month or so.
To be honest, there's NO softsampler with a sample/patch archiving and searching scheme as lousy as the EXS. Even more amazing as
this has been the case since the very first version came out.
Once you got more than 3 samples of the same name and plan to reorganize your samples (or move them to another machine) you're
asking for serious troubles as the lousy sample search "engine" wouldn't even allow you to manually point it to a sample as soon as
the required sample isn't among the first three choices. In addition it's doing no CRC checks, so anything called "kick.wav" will be
considered as a probably suitable sample.
Really makes you think what's going on in Mr. Developers mind...

In case you really have loads of samples and reorganize them at least somewhat more or less often, the EXS Manager is indeed what
you need.

Hey, I was trying for the ultimate paradoxical effect... =)

I was talking to Kelly Jacklin a while ago about this, and we tended to
have different results. He swears by it, saying that if the path is
incorrect the Mac does a quick CatSearch and comes up with the file in
normally 7-10 seconds or so, then that helps get the reset of the samples.
My times, on a G4 1.25 Mac, were much greater.

We should mention that we use PC's much of the time, and the scheme REALLY
hurts there, as there is no CatSearch available. (CatSearch takes advantage
of the Mac HFS file system which integrates a mini-database with the filing
system.) Not only that, once you try to load a .exs file with incorrect
paths, you can't stop the process while Logic starts checking out your
250GB drive... CTL-ALT-DEL to the rescue though.

Another possible advantage is that the EXS automatically rewrites the EXS
file to update the paths, so you don't have to resave. SOme may like this,
some may not.

Since most EXS activity is on Mac, it would seem that a good argument can
be made that the present system is OK. However, I don't see the hassle of
simply putting up a status dialog with a cancel button on it; besides,
isn't that Mac Interface Standard-compatible?? =)

I curious how you imported your s2000 samples? I have some s1000 samples
that I'd like to import... Any ideas?
