EXS late to respond?

EXS late to respond?

2001-07-15 by roman pirie

I create a song with say drums, bass, keys. All using exs instruments. The
first one plays alright, but the following instances don't respond straight
away. IOW I press play and the first few notes of the bass and keys don't
sound. With audio I realise that reading from a hard disk can't happen
instantly and stopping the sequencer for a second seems to let Logic get
ready for instant playback. But the exs is a sampler and loads into RAM. But
it seems doesn't behave like a hardware sampler.

I think I saw this mentioned in a thread regarding playing multiple exs's
and/or touch tracks of multiple exs's.
What's the story?

I realise that but it makes life a little more difficult in many ways.
Editing, jump to markers and play/loop etc. The exs is RAM based so what is
the LOGIC behind this inadequacy.

Jump back one bar before you hit play. You'll hear everything.

What was mentioned, regarding playing multiple instances live, was that
the first instance has minimal latency but all susequent instances have
substantial latency. What this means is that the other instances are
delayed all through the song. I don't think this is what you meant is it
?

My theory is that Logic/CPU must read ahead slightly to correctly manage all
the audio. Of course your hardware sampler doesn't need to do this because
its responsibilities are far less taxing on its processor. I suppose its a
trade off--accuracy for immediate action. Personally, I'll take the
accuracy. It never bothered me much once I figured out I should just step
back a bar before hitting play. If you're at a live show triggering
sequences, start them all on bar or beat 2... Having your computer do the
job of everything does have its prices. Well worth it to me though. -Jer

Most definately. Are you suggesting better performance with multiple exs's
in 4.7.2?

Just that there was a bug on cycle mode in earlier versions.

Oh something just popped into my head. There has been a bug with 4.7.xx
with the 'chase events' settings.
If your autoload song was originally created pre-4.7, try building a
new autoload, especially new audio objects, then trash Logic
prefs,.Then, after re-bootring Logic, toggle the chase events settings a
few times. [What I observed was that the Chase Events setting were not
reflecting the true state of the song data.]

I had this problem before. But in my case, it was because I was
starting playback in the middle of a sequence, and the notes I
expected to be right on the downbeat when I pushed play were actually
at the very end of the previous bar (it's just MIDI data, after all).
When I quantized it, it played right on the beat.
