Hello EXS-folk, I've posted a Free D.I.Y. (do it yourself) Music Box sample set at the Bolder Sounds website for the EXS24. Enjoy! --------------------------------------- Dennis Burns Bolder Sounds Boulder Colorado http://www.boldersounds.com ----------------------------------------

Thanks for sharing! Now I wish I had a kalimba-style MIDI controller... In every instrument there is one zone where pitch and volume are way off. For instance, in the "DIY Music Box" instument, the Key parameter of zone "mus bx2 C#4<Kml0>" is set to C-2 but the correct value is C#4. Volume is 0 but the correct volume would be about -16. In all instruments the one wrong Key parameter is set to C-2 except "Music Box Unison Layer" where in zone "mus bx2 D#5" it is set to A3. I wonder if this was caused by a bug in Keymap? Ingo

I'll check it out and correct it if necessary and upload it again. Dennis @ Bolder

But I'm certainly not going to 'pass the buck' I should have checked this more carefully before zipping it up. My hunch is that when I converted the whole sample set from 24 bit to 16, something went haywire, although I have no solid evidence. Because I'm noticing more problems than just samples mapped to the wrong pitch. I'll post here when there is another version of the DIY Music box to download, because it really is a bit of a mess for such a nice set of samples. My apologies! Dennis @ Bolder

OK - problem solved and fixed, 2 options are available. 1. If you have already downloaded the D.I.Y. Music Box, you can just download the new .exs instruments files. They are in a zip package at the bottom on the DIY Music Box download page. 2. If you have not downloaded this free sound at all, the whole zip file including samples has been updated-corrected. You can also re- download the whole package if you wish (9.2 mb). Here is what I *believe* went wrong. Upon finishing this sound set I decided to convert from 24 bit to 16 using Keymap. I used just 1 of the .exs instruments to do this. I guess you could say I tried to 'fool' the EXS into thinking it was still using 24 bit files (bad idea). I should have resaved each .exs instrument from Keymap again. The result was a weird tuning of 1 sample, but also more annoying was a EXS induced click at the end of each sample. This I corrected by changing the sample end frame of each zone by -2 (a fun way to spend the afternoon). What is really odd is brought these same .exs instruments into Kontakt 2 and it had none of the above mentioned problems. So, go ahed and download whatever you may need, this is a very nice sound set I feel. Sorry for the inconvenience! Dennis Burns Bolder Sounds Boulder Colorado http://www.boldersounds.com

What happened is that an .exs file stores the bitrate, sample data offset, sample length, channels, and byte order of the sample it's referencing. If the .exs file doesn't get updated after you edit it's source samples, those pieces of information can be wrong. Usually doing this (24->16) means that you'll get white noise or buzziness in the samples, since the .exs file will play the sample at 24-bits even though it's 16-bits. Garth Hjelte Sampler User
