Kirk Hunter Strings/EXS24/Weird!

2001-08-08 by Eric Doggett

Hi all –

I have Kirk Hunter’s Virtuoso Strings collection from Ilio. Love em.
Problem is, on different patches, there might be one note on the
keyboard that when I hit it will play the sample it’s supposed to, but
then mix in some other sample from one of the other sounds. Imagine
hitting a solo cello and hearing a violin trill clicking in. It’s really
weird, and it only happens on or two keys per instrument.

Anybody else seen this?

Thanks!

What version of the Virtuoso Strings do you have? Akai? Have you looked at
the programming of the patch? Is it assigned to the correct sample only
playing back the wrong one? I would suspect that it is a problem that has
resulted from the conversion of Akai to exs-24. I own the E-mu EOS version
and there is a ton of programming that has gone into it. I have not noticed
this in my version as yet. However, I am using it in an E-mu sampler and
have not tried converting it into exs-24 format via any translation tool
(like CDXtract or Translator). Do you have any controllers that you are
using while playing back the patch? The E-mu EOS version will bring in
different samples (on purpose) when using different controllers. For
example, on some presets, if you pitch-bend down, a trill will begin
playing, if you bring in modulation the filter will open up and the sample
gets louder.

Have you tried the same program in an Akai sampler? Do you get the same
reslts? If so, you could try contacting Ilio for some help. Good luck with
your problem. It would be a shame for you if you couldn't get the most out
of this wonderful set.

Hi Fernando-

Thanks for the email! Yep, it's the akai version, and I suspect a
possible conversion issue as well. I am not using any controllers while
playing, just straight keyboard hitting. Perhaps I should try contacting
Ilio.

Thanks!

Kirk programmed the VS to fade in trills using the pitch bend. It is this
way on the master Emu versions, at least. I have the Akai Edition, but
can't check it presently. Check the docs to see if this is the case.

That's way you get both sounds upon just striking the key. Really, the only
way of dealing with this is deleting the offending zones.

(Fernando was correct on his analysis.)

So, the EXS's Akai translator has no way of making this happen in EXS -
because EXS's engine doesn't allow it and also it likely doesn't do that
anyway.

That makes sense now... ok, so it's time for a big 'zone deletion'
party.. :)

Thanks !

Hi,

Fernando is right about the programming of Kirk Hunter's Virtuoso
Strings. Even the Akai version is more involved with velocity and
controller crossfades than most any other title, which can translate
unpredictably into the EXS.

As an alternative, the SampleCell version translates quite well, with
fewer anomalies. If you contact the ILIO crew we can work on a case by
case basis to find a solution for you.
