I indexed my sytem/apps partion too. Fortunately, being a smaller partion, it
didn't take too long. Does anyone know where exactly the index file is stored? I
was surprised to see that it was over 70 megs big.

Hi Igor, I'm not the one who indexed a 25 gig drive. Mine was only a few
gigs. No, I don't notice any distinct speed increase, but it wasn't a
problem prior to indexing. My instruments load in a few seconds.

One thing that indexing is sweet for though is being able to search by
content all of my favourite saved tips from the LUG over the past years
(and now this list). It's worth it for that alone!

Hmmm. I use Outlook Express for Mac and can search all my e-mails for
content without the use of indexing. Why do you use this method versus using
your e-mail client's internal search capability? I am an experienced Mac
user and disabled indexing immediately upon setting up my system. The only
time I could deal with the delay is while I'm asleep (when I should be
backing up my drive).

Because I don't save it in my email client software format (I use Netscape
Communicator). I save them as either text clippings or Simpletext documents.
I've used different email programs over the years and this way seems to be
safest for future retrieval (IMO)

I am too and also did the same. But now that I've tried it, it doesn't seem to
cost any system performance. I figure I'll update the indexing manually when I
feel like it, rather than schedule it for automatic updates. This way I can
keep the scheduler extension disabled.

Thanks, Eli. Good to here another seasoned opinion.

Indexing is great when looking for just about anything. I have files
of Roland sample lists. If I want to find a mandolin or Tibetan
voice, I can use a Contents search, locate the reference file, which
points me at the correct CD to load.

etc etc etc

In general, I believe it pays to be organised.

Yeah, I like sharing ideas on organization too. Another reason I forgot to mention
that I don't just use my email program is that I get the LUG in digest form. It
isn't easy to save individual elements of the digest in an email program in the
format it comes in. So once I am copying and pasting, I just prefer to take care of
it myself outside the email software. It's easier to backup that way too.

Streaming - not-streaming

2002-01-29 by Rubber Chicken Software Co.

Emagic as showing (I don't know privately or publicly) the "streaming"
stuff again at NAMM. They prefer not to call it "streaming" though - it's
something like "virtual sampling" or similar.

I'm really looking forward to L5 and what it'll bring to the table, and to
EXS. I hope it comes soon.

Note: Or "ESX," as most people call it. In fact, I sat through an entire
meeting with Emagic people where one participant consistently (about 25 or
so times) called it "ESX." Nobody corrected him. I was going to, but I just
said "forget it." =) It doesn't surprise me - when people call for support,
it's always "ESX."

He said lists, not samples. I don't think the samples are on the drive (I
could be mistaken).

Some of the lists came with the CD-ROMs. Some I found on the Web.
Some I made using Transferstation (Mac). I imagine Translator &
CDXtract could do this too.......

Yes I did mean lists.
I could also have the samples on my drive if I wanted to, but that
would be one BIG drive filled only with samples. For now, I'll load
them when I need them.......

That must be the one. Thanks Brian
