Translator question

Translator question

2002-03-21 by highlandsource

hi sexy exs'ers

is there any benefit to my using translator considering my entire
sample library is in the akai format? in other words, does it
improve on translation compared to the built -in akai conversion
in the exs?

I believe it does a superior job over built-in conversion.

Superior in what way? Sound conversion quality; or is there better
translation of the naming/organizing/file structure elements of the patches;
or better translation of instrument parameter settings from other formats?

Hi,

It is faster is the obvious one when you run Translator. However, it also
converts the samples/programs better IMHO.

I have some Akai CD-Roms for example that have played back with clicks in the
samples (right in the loops) when converted via the exs-24 converter. I convert
those same samples using Translator and there are no clicks (incidentally,
I don't get clicks on my hardware samplers either).

There are many people using CDXtract and I found that similar issues like the
clicks in loops exist there. I tested CDXtract 3.6 prior to buying Translator.
For me, I kind of like the interface of CDXtract better but Translator does
a better job of the translation for me. That is why I went with it.

The other bonus is that I have some Roland CD-Roms as well as some E-mu CD-Roms
and Translator can translate those too. Translator handles the Roland emphasis
curve (if you want it to - it is an option) and even simulates the alternate
looping styles that are unique to Roland samplers (ie forward and reverse).

Is it just me ? But when I convert a Roland patch to the EXS24 format with
and without the deemphasis and even though I see "de-emphasizing sample"
on the progress window, every time both .wav files sound exactly the same.
I don't trust my ears enough, so I used Wavelab to compare the original
sample and the de-emphasized sample and there is not a single bit of
difference between the 2 files. A pure placebo effect !
