Subject: [exs] EXS24 Samples folder

Hi all.
Advice needed.
I have 3 hd's on my computer.
My main audio programs (Logic V5) Wavelab, ect, are on IDE channel 1
on motherboard.
My r/w ide cd rom is on IDE channel 2 on the motherboard.
My audio files are on a seperate drive on a ide controller card.
My downloads and MP3's are on another seperate drive on the ide
controller card.
My question is where is it best to keep the EX samples folder??
In the Logic folder? or on another drive?
Will it help to have it on another drive? or is it best to leave it
in the Logic folder?
Any advice would be appreciated.
Allan.

Hello!!

You should have a folder inside Logic wich is called Sampler Instruments
there the EXS files should be and then you can put your sounds wherever but
I put them on the same harddisk so the computer doesn\ufffdt search on all my
other harddrives...

The best,

Alvaro Villalobos.

To make it simple:
Put the folder used for the EXS samples *anywhere* where it has enough space
to grow and where you will never forget to back it up. Once you loaded a
patch and the EXS has found the appropriate samples any further loading will
be faster (it only has to search in case you moved your samples manually
anyways).

Sascha

Hi Sascha,
First, thanks to you and all who responded.
What would you sugest, I can put the EXS sample folder on my master
program drive, or, on my other drive thats on a seperate PCI IDE
controller card, they both have a lot of spare room.
thanks in advance,
Allan

Hi Allan,
As said before, in general this is totally up to you. If you, for example,
move your samples around a lot manually (in explorer/finder that is, for
whatever reason) I would put them on the smallest drive and specify that one
in the EXS's preferences => will decrease searching time.
If you however make use of the EXS's VSM function, I would eventually put
them on your fastest drive. But again this may depend on your style of
working. In case you're using a lot of audio tracks and large EXS patches as
well it might be a better idea to run them from independent drives.
Personally I am using the EXS in VSM mode (set to "medium", unfortunately
that's a global setting, I wish it was on a per song base) and I'm storing
all my samples on the first partition of my audio drive. This is working
very well for me, I can run a lot of audio tracks (actually as much as I
want) and am still getting pretty good EXS performance.
To me it seems that in times of fast computers and harddrives you really
don't have to care about these things too much anymore in terms of
performance, it's all up to your personal preferences. For me it's just
important to have all my regularly used samples (for the EXS, HALion,.
DR-008 and Battery) in one common place that I will never forget to back up
properly.

Regards,
Sascha

Many thanks Sascha,
What I did was, I took out the EXS sample folder from Logic and put
it on a seperate partition on a drive that is on my PCI ide
controller card, and then did a short cut which I put into the Logics
folder. The EXS24 found the samples O\k.
Once again, many thanks, keep up the good work.
Allan.

For whatever it's worth: You don't even need to create a shortcut for the
sample folder, the EXS will basically find them *anywhere* on your disks,
unless you have a certain drive letter specified in the EXS's preferences
which is not identical with the one carrying your samples. Shortcuts are
only required once you move a) your global sampler instruments folder, b)
your plugin settings folder, c) your Vstplugins folder, d) AKAI samples
folder.
But I agree, having a shortcut to a moved samples folder might be a good
idea as no additional EXS search is required.

Sascha

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
