Thanks Colin for that info!

So, maybe it's a little early for this kind of thread but... why would an
owner of EXS24 spend 230 bucks on Kontakt? After taking a good look at the
specs, the only big deal I can think of is the variety of filters. Time and
pitch shifting is ok, but I won't hold my breath regarding the quality of
the process. The enveloppes? The effects (oh god, we have enough already
outside of the Kontakt box, dontcha think?)? The fact that it's modular?

Just wondering out loud.

if the quality of the filters are approaching that offered by something like
the EMU E64 series Samplers then it's worth it, I still use the EMU for
making certain sounds fit in a mix even now although it's a very ungainly
way of working compared to the EXS.

what we really need is a range of decent filters on the EXS surely it's not
too difficult for emagic now? maybe they could cannibalise some of the code
from the ES2? [hasn't that got sophisticated filters?] I know the EXS is
supposed to be a kind of workhorse sampler but we could really do with some
different filters.

Gee Ned....aren't you excited about reconverting all your sounds to a new
format?

That way you could be using the latest tools that do the same things as you
already have. If you don't have the latest stuff, then what will the
neighbors think?

Or are you one of those weirdos that thinks that he should concentrate on
making music?

:-)

Seriously though, Kontakt is neat...but primarily as a sound design/mangling
tool. The time-streching stuff is just like in Reactor...pretty edgy and
warped sounding....great for weird granular electro stuff, not so good for
straight applications. I prefer the elegance of the EXS for straight ahead
sampling and library management. It's really the best IMO of all the samplers
at getting the balance right between power and ease of use.

Long live the EXS!!

Love live Kontakt!!

More great tools for the whole family.

Best,

EP

I imagine we'll see a very groovy update to the EXS in the future. Emagic
doesn't want to relinquish the sampler coolness factor to another German
company...they're too competitive for that!

And like you said...they've already got some terrific in-house filter
algorithms.....

I think it's just a matter of time....

I agree that it's better to wait, than to learn an entirely new system, that
is in its 1.00 state. EXS is pretty mature and happening now.

Course if you're a tweaker nut like me.....you'll be all over it!

Hi

There are 2 major differences.
Kontakt is not a logic only product, so you can use it within other
programs.
Kontakt will work stand alone.

I have ordered my PC crossgrade, mainly because I will not be taking
the Apple crossgrade path. Maybe in a few years time when I need a new
notebook I will reconsider logic and apple again.

Hy,
I think EXS and Kontakt are very complementary (I hope such a word
exist ;o) ) and I am enjoying to have both...

Kontakt is very good to expand your creativity with samples, to let
you try things it would be a pain in the ass to do with EXS.

One example:
A great thing about Kontakt is its ability to make quick program for
just one song.
For instance, you are on a song and you think that you should add a
weird sax effect (why not? ;o) )
You open an instance of kontakt, you listen to some sax samples, you
drag'n'drop 3 samples in the mapping editor, in one mouse movement,
you just create a program with 3 samples on three zone of your choice
(the mapping editor is such great in kontakt, I wish the exs had the
same).
You could tweak the sound with the effect of kontakt, etc.
But one of the most great thing is that you do not have to save your
program, you leave it in your song, you save your song, and when you
will load your song another time... bingo, all is here!!
It is perfect for experimentation...
