Free samples from the U. of Iowa

Free samples from the U. of Iowa

2002-10-28 by Ned Bouhalassa

If you've got some free time on your hands, and would like to program your
own multisampled programs, there are a whole bunch of free samples (every
note, and various articulations) of instruments to be found at the Iowa
Musical Instrument Database (AIFF, 44.1Khz) :

http://theremin.music.uiowa.edu/MIS.html

Now if only I can take a day off to do this... ;-)

cool! any smart way to download them? (I'd be glad to give the piano a go
and then publish it. Perhaps if we all pitched in with an instrument each,
we'd get some cool result by joined effort?)

Re: [exs] Free samples from the U. of Iowa

2002-10-28 by Sascha Franck

Wow - those make a great impression.
I'd gladly patch some samples together, but... the things is, I'm still on a
56k connect - so it'll take some years to finish the downloads :-)

Thanks Ned,
Sascha

Hm, just got some of those French Horn samples... very low level (ff still
has -11dB only, pp has -30 or so...).
Also the intonation is somewhat questionable.

Cheers,
Sascha

Re: [exs] Free samples from the U. of Iowa

2002-10-28 by Ned Bouhalassa

Yeah, they are recorded low. One advantage, however, is that there is _no_
noise floor to speak of, so crank them up! ;-)

Ned

PS: as for intonation... well, you know, they're free! Let's just say I
won't be getting rid of my SAM Horns.

I think it's a great idea if we all make a little effort to make this library
for the EXS.
I'll gladly download it and send a CD of the samples to those who
will "patch some samples together".
BTW there are some of the files that "does not exist on the server", but I'll
contact MIS and hear if there is a solution.

I'd gladly cooperate, but can't download the samples myself, being on
a 56k connection. Building instruments from them would be fun to do
though, and probably not that difficult. If you're really willing to
download the samples and send a CD, I'd be happy to tackle some of
the instruments.

Impressive collection of free samples btw... Every single note of a
Steinway... For those who missed the original post:

Mail me your adress and I'll send you a CD in a day or two.
I've reached the Sopranosax just now.

Anyone any ideas on how we could best split up the work ?

Anders and I have already been in contact, and there seems to be a
Plan (tm) evolving. How about this: everybody interested in doing
some exs-instrument(s) sends their snail mail address to Anders or
me. He starts off by downloading all the samples, burning them on 2
CDs, and sending those to me. I decide on the instruments I'm gonna
do, make copies of the 2 CDs, and send those to the next on the list,
together with a note on which instruments have already been covered.
This person in turn decides which instruments he does, adds those to
the note, makes copies of the CDs, and sends them to the next guy on
the list. Etc.

That way one person doesn't have to carry the financial load of heaps
of CD-copies and postage, everybody gets a copy, and all instruments
will be EXS'd in due time.

We can then collect all EXS instruments, zip them, and put them in
the file section of the group or whatever.

Sounds great. I live in Australia and would definitely be up for helping,
is the long distance a problem?

I have a broadband connection and I have downloaded 1/2 of the Piano
samples already.
I don't have time to be sending CD's around the place.
Sorry.

I can make the Piano samples available to anyone who wants them though,
probably in an ISO.
Also, I am going to be creating a Kontact instrument rather than EXS- so
anyone who wants this is welcome to it.

JR

There is a useful util called HTTrack Website Copier 3.2 available for free
on download.com
this application lets you download an entire website (or particular files
though a filter setting).

It's beats sitting there downloading the files two at a time from each web
page, and mine is currently trawling the iowa one for everything it has to
offer

I think this poor web site will be maxed out soon...

If you want me to deliver them personally: yes :-). Except if you

The ftp-client Anarchie for the Mac offers the same functionality.

Free samples from the U. of Iowa

2002-10-30 by Frank Valet

Hi! I just downloaded thw bass trombone and I'm thinking of exs'ing it, but
I'm very busy at the moment with another project, probably won't make it in
time, but I'm up to it. are we gonna share the files/exs-instruments via
yahoogroups-file section? I'm on a broadband connection, so I rather need
the Instruments than the audio-files. Nice to "share a Project" with you
guys out there, regards from Germany,

You don't have to finish the instrument by tomorrow....;-)
I'll put you up for the Basstrombone.

You are keeping track of who is downloading their own samples, right? The
CD idea is great for not burdening any one person with extra costs, but they
should really be sent only to people without broadband (or those who need a
CD regardless of having broadband, for whatever reason.)

Here I am nagging, and I can't even help, since I have only the EXSP24,
which can't create instruments. But I'm good for moral support, sort of!

Gregory

PS: I now understand why Hendrik and Sascha are able to do as much
programming as they do - it keeps them busy while they wait for large files
to be downloaded over a 56K modem.

Re: [exs] Re: Free samples from the U. of Iowa

2002-10-31 by Sascha Franck

Very nice of the broadband folks who allready said they'd be sending out
CDs... there's a problem left though.
I allready downloaded quite some samples and doing instrument patches of
them certainly requires a whole lot of work. Why? Because a) IMO a lot of
them need to be normalized, b) a lot of them need to be destructively edited
in order to get proper loop points (ok, one could just map them, but from
what I've seen this won't allways lead to proper results), c) all of them
need their startpoints to be adjusted.
Sure, apart from normalizing you can do all these things non-destructively
in the EXS editor, then just upload the EXS patches and then everybody
having the samples would be able to enjoy finished instruments... but as I
allready tried mapping some instruments I can ensure you that in many cases
destructive editing (such as proper cutting, eventual destructive looping
and "save as"-ing) is the only way to go unless you'd like to spend ages in
the EXS editor (we all know it's not THAT great).
The only exception might be the piano samples. The only thing required there
would be start point adjustment, which can be done easily inside the EXS
editor.

Oh, another point is the filenames. For whatever reason they are named .aiff
instead of .aif (which actually contains the same file information). AIFF on
PCs isn't exactly supported well (WaveLab for instance only supports AIF
naturally). I renamed them all because of that...

Anyways, if someone wouldn't mind sending a CD (or two, that piano is
ridiculously huge) to my adress I'd gladly send some CD(s) further, both
with patches and eventually destructively edited samples.
Maybe we could arrange a snail mailing chain, so each person only has to
send CD(s) once.

Regards,
Sascha

Hi people,

has anyone tried listening to the piano samples?
They are very very very low in level.
Normalising them is pointless- you end up with about with loads of noise
sitting at -24db.

Anyone got any ideas?

Yeah - those folks didn't seem to care too much about their recording levels
(actually they didn't care at all). Also, I wonder if any of the engineers
ever listened to the actually transferred audiofiles. There's some really
nasty digital spikes (actually more like noise bursts) in some of those - I
was just doing one Alto Flute patch and there's one spike in each of the
files it seems.

That was the idea -- see one of my previous posts (yesterday, I
think). As for your other sensible comments... Anders is now
downloading the entire website, I think (good boy :-), and once he's
through, we should figure out a way how to go about this thing
exactly...

some web sites limit the number of simultaneous files/connection to a
specific address. Some let you get round it by opening a number of browsers
and selecting a couple files from each browser section, but the Iowa one
seemed to limit it by IP address (dunno, maybe just me) but I just set my
app going and left it to get on with it. Quicker than clicking all the
individual files, and selecting where you want to download them to
individually.. no ?

Hm - I almost finished one flute patch (using the flute.novib samples), I
will upload it later on.
Even if I like those group efforts of sending CDs to each other (at least
that's something proving we're a bit more than just plain ASCII
characters...), I have my doubts it'll be worth it.
I am not particularly impressed by that flute patch, but you may try it on
your own (the flute.novib samples are 25MB, not that hard to get, even with
a 56k modem).
Also, as James said, the piano samples seem to be quite noisy and maybe
there's not much of a point in using some noisy 1.5GB piano patch - let
alone the efforts of mapping and adjusting all the notes. The 256MB AKAI
piano certainly does a better job.
Btw, at first I wasn't exactly impressed by that piano, but then I found
some excellent piano MIDI file on the web (I'm such a miserable piano
player, so there... http://www.saschafranck.de/BlueInGreen.mid) and dragged
it onto the EXS track, slapped a bit of PSPs piano verb on it and WOW -
there you go! Highly recommended along with Echochamber's brilliant double
bass (in case you don't have it: http://www.echochamber.ch, defenitely a
must).

Sascha

Hi all,

I would be happy to also contribute in this CD-"daisy chain" of EXS
sample production. (I have tried to download the samples myself, but
during the last days I can not access the site.) Is somebody
maintaining a list of contributors?

Which files in particular ? I've just been slicing up those (Alto
Flute) and haven't foud any obvious digital bursts or spikes so far.
After reading your post I did a quick visual inspection and couldn't
see anything either. Perhaps it's something to do with the way Windows
is reading those aiff files.
I did find substantial DC-offset on all of them though. It looks like
the 'ambience' which separates the notes is just low-level noise which
has been put in there, after the fact, and I think thats where the
DC-offset may have come from. There is a distinct step at the beginning
and end of each note, which looks very similar in all cases. [I don't
think it's just the fact they are all from the same instrument.]

I doubt it has anything to do with Windows - but anyways, I was wrong, I
meant the straight Flute (the no.vib samples).
You can find spikes in "flute.novib.pp.C6Bb6.aiff" and
"flute.novib.pp.B3B4.aiff"
Too bad as they'd make up for an important role in such a flute patch. But
well, you can of course map one of the neighbour samples to the keys in
question (it allways only affects one key). Which is what I did.

Are the spikes more than one cycle? Easy to fix if it is by using the pencil

I didn't find any spikes in these either. A little lip-noise [like a
soft click] maybe, and an annoying ring, somewhere near 10khz, which
sounds like aliasing or something, which I'm not sure is natural [I
haven't closely examined many flute recordings like this] It's
definitely not there in any other flute samples I have.

Hm, strange.
Maybe it's got to do with the fact that my downloads were resumed pretty
often (the site doesn't seem to be hosted too stable).
I wonder though as those bursts of noise allways seem to happen at almost
identical places (the middle of a tone that is). And no, it certainly is no
lip-noise (I'd like to see lips being able to produce such noises...).

Cheers,
Sascha
